Empathy and understanding others are so important. š It can be easy to judge others and be critical of where they ended up, but we never know all the hardship theyāve been through that led them there.Ā
(I know the comic is a bit lighter in topic, but a bit of a note in regards to news in the past few months that I havenāt been able to put into art.) I hope we can treat all people with respect and compassion, regardless of nationality or race or religion or sexual orientation - something that we see fail to happen time and time again when we look at the deplorable conditions of detained immigrants or hate-fueled attacks. If we can grow our understanding of others instead of condemning those that are different, the world could be just a bit brighter for everyone.

On w*ndigoag:
W*ndigoag/w*ndigo are sacred Algonquian spirits that have spread to other Anishinaabe cultures. They arenāt worshiped or whatever, they are feared.
Theyāre the physical embodiments of evil, the result of a person falling into the trap of greed and cruelty, usually in the form of cannibalism. Our fear not only stems from the spirits and the danger they pose to others, but also their implications and the constant reminder that anyone can become a monster if they allow themselves to.
They are not bipedal deer and I have no idea where that concept came from. Most traditional depictions show them as humanoid giants made of ice, usually with the body of the person they came from encased inside.
In some stories, theyāre killed by people, usually via fire. In others, they can only be killed by luring them to a body of water and getting the attention of a water spirit to fight it.
Thereās very, very few stories where the person can be saved. The transformation into a w*ndigo is not a reversible one, and the only real way to save someone from that existence is to free them with death.
We censor their names because, traditionally, weāre taught not to say them out loud in case we get the attention of one or summon one. This is especially important during winter or at night.
They are not benign spirits. They are not kind. They are not rational. They are evil and cruel, and their only desires center around killing and eating. Theyāre as rational and logical as a wild raccoon in the late stages of rabies.
You cannot work with them. They canāt be bound, and they definitely canāt be bought or sold. Do not trust any spirit who claims to be a w*ndigo and do not trust any spirit worker who tries to sell you one.
W*ndigoag are Algonquian and Anishinaabe spirits. Algonquian people are the authorities on them, other Anishinaabe people less so. Non-Anishinaabe Natives cannot say that appropriation of w*ndigoag is okay because that isnāt their culture and itās definitely not their decision to make. You cannot give someone permission to use something that isnāt yours.
The use of w*ndigoag in non-Native media is appropriation. The only exception to this is in when the creators work with Algonquian people to make respectful and accurate depictions. Youāll be very hard pressed to find cases of this.
W*ndigoag are not cryptids because they are sacred spirits. Abrahamic angels are not cryptids. Japanese yokai are not cryptids. Vodou loa are not cryptids. Respect indigenous beliefs as legitimate spirituality instead of reducing our cultures down to bastardized stories.
If you arenāt Anishinaabe, you cannot be āwendigokinā. Appropriation of indigenous spirituality isnāt suddenly okay because your ~soul~ is an indigenous spirit. You are not entitled to our cultures or spiritual beliefs. Jfc.
āWendigocoreā is also bullshit, what the fuck is wrong with you all? Our sacred spirituality is not your ugly ass aesthetic.
(Left those uncensored because itās a summer afternoon and I want people in those tags to see this. Fuck off.)
Anishinaabe people are not obligated to share our SACRED STORIES with outsiders in order for them to be respected. We donāt want you to make your depictions of w*ndigoag in your stories more accurate. We just want you to leave our cultures alone for once.
Now please stop sending me messages about w*ndigoag. I understand you all just want to learn but I am so fucking tired. Iāve answered these questions dozens of times and I need a break.
Donāt start discourse on this post. I am not in the mood for it.
If any Algonquian or other Anishinaabe people have corrections, hmu.Ā
Forgotten Women Friday #44
Empress Theodora- 500-548- Byzantine Empire
āThe Sex Worker Empressā
Theodora was quite literally the empress of scandal. Born around 500 AD, Theodora was probably either born in Syria or Cyprus, but she grew up in Constantinople. After her father died when Theodora was four years old, she and her older sisters worked as sex workers in a brothel and as actresses (at this time in history there was a very thin line between the two professions). On stage, Theodora became famous for her portrayal of Leda and the Swan, during which, she stripped down to as little as she legally was allowed to in public. Off stage, Theodora was rumored to have taken as many as 40 men to bed in one night. For some time, Theodora was a mistress for multiple men, and itās likely that she underwent numerous abortions before she was even 18-years-old. When she was 21, the tantalizing Theodora caught the eye of Justinian, the soon-to-be Emperor of the Eastern Roman Empire. However, it was forbidden for Justinian, an heir to the throne, to marry an actress, because of their promiscuous lifestyles. Justinian ultimately persuaded his uncle, Justin I, to repeal the law and he happily married Theodora, who became Empress two years later when Justinian succeeded the throne.
Theodora would become one of the most influential empresses in history, and Justinian called her his āpartner in my deliberations.ā Theodora truly proved herself during the Nika riots of 532 AD. When Justinianās forces could not control the angry mobs in the streets, the Emperor prepared to flee, but Theodora spoke up saying, āMy lords, the present occasion is too serious to allow me to follow the convention that a woman should not speak in a manās council.ā She urged her husband and his men to stay, arguing that it was better to die in power than flee and live in solitude and safety for years to come. Standing in a room full of men, Theodora declared, āMay I never be deprived of this purple robe, and may I never see the day when those who meet me do not call me empress.ā Theodoraās words won the men over, and Justinianās army eventually settled the rioting.
After the Nika riots, Justinian never forgot that it was his wife who saved his reign. From then on, he gave Theodora real power, and the two transformed Constantinople into one of the most sophisticated, artistic cities in the world. Theodora got laws passed that advanced womenās rights, such as a law that banned forced prostitution, better known today as sexual trafficking. She also made pimping a crime, made rape punishable by death, and expanded the rights of women over property and in divorce. Theodora died at the age of 48 of cancer, and her husband wept bitterly at her funeral. Along with Justinian, she is a saint in the Eastern Orthodox Church. Theodora is the true embodiment of the rags to riches fairy tale and forever remembered in history as the most powerful woman in Byzantium.
