i just have nowhere else to post this but i really like how demon slayer approaches capitalism (or rather, how a capitalistic vs. non-capitalistic mindset affects things like relationships, progress, ethics) as an antagonist, in that the demon model of success/progress involves exploiting others and maximizing profit, essentially (not to mention cannibalistic monsters in fiction often connote objectification and consumption of others - especially vampires, which the demons in demon slayer seem to derive a lot of their lore from)

at first i wasn’t sure if it was just a feature of the plot so much as a deliberate metaphor but after seeing the movie today, the allegory is just so satisfyingly seamless i have really fallen in love with it

and i especially like that the heroic solution to a capitalistic model doesn’t seem overly simplistic - they could have easily lapsed into a sort of utopian “be nice to everyone, equally, always” fantasy which might have discredited the narrative, but instead they opt for this super interesting, almost old-fashioned feeling apprenticeship model that emphasizes values like education, tradition, reverence toward the past / responsibility toward the future, and protection of the weak or socially disadvantaged

and the context of that kind of “almost industrial” ambiguous, turn of the century-ish historical period - arguably a point of no return for modern capitalism - only fuels this fundamental question

like, the train itself Being a demon is great - when trains themselves are this near-universal symbol of industrialization (and in the modern day, the symbol of commuting wage laborers) - and the fact that the weak point is the coal which powers the train when tanjiro, who most embodies the show’s core values, comes from a working class family of coal-makers. (+ rengoku’s “set your heart ablaze” advice to tanjiro - the body, for the working class, is your ultimate last resource and tool for empowerment)

it’s just a great, unspoken way to narratively place the power back in the hands of tanjiro and rengoku, but also in the hands of the poor and the laborers - definitely a vibe i got in s1 of the anime, but it’s wonderfully, succinctly done in the movie imo

thinking about how age of calamity-verse teba probably all but has a heart attack when he realizes how young (and like... immature) revali is compared to how they talk about him in the village, and how despairingly unfair it was to place that amount of responsibility on him or any of the younger champions. and how he’d probably act super dad around them after that, like tell them that they’re doing a great job, making sure they’re eating and sleeping, act kind of protective when they’re going into fights, etc. all while still getting starstruck when he remembers who he’s talking to lol
