Under pressure from boycott movement, organizers cut reggae singer — who is not Israeli — from line-up over ‘sensitivity to Palestine’
Seriously, fuck these people. I DO support a Palestinian state, and I still wouldn’t have signed on to this. If I were an internationally famous reggae singer, I mean.
Imagine telling Vienna Teng to sign a statement endorsing Tibet’s independence before she can play at a show in Italy.
So, a Jewish person got barred from an event for not certifying themselves as A Good Jew? Not surprising.
Did they make this demand of every performer who signed on for the festival, or did they just single out the Jewish guy?
(I’m not really asking; I’m pretty sure they never ask goyim to sign loyalty clauses or to “prove themselves”; Same shit they’ve been pulling for centuries).
Gets better. The headline identifies Matisyahu as a ‘Hebrew singer’ (in Spanish they still regularly use Hebrew and Jewish interchangeably). In the body of the article they freely admit they wanted him to ‘clearly and unambiguously’ declare he was against Israel, supports a Palestinian state without reservation, and condemns the Israeli government (again, this man isn’t even fcking Israeli) for genocide and ethnic cleansing – in a video or written and signed declaration meant to be made public.
This all began because these other ppl boycotted the festival first bc there was a ‘zionist’ participating so the local branch of BDS got involved and boycotted Matisyahu instead
“they had all confirmed to the organisers that they would not participate in the festival if matisyahu performed” 🤪
I feel like people have such a limited view of the Shoah as something that killed religious Jews living in Eastern Europe. Certainly, that’s the majority of Jewish deaths from a raw numbers perspective. But that narrow view erases so much suffering.
Imperial Japan was allied to the Nazis, so Jews in East Asia and the Pacific forced to flee or die as Japan expanded their empire. Fascist Spain was sympathetic to the Nazi cause, and it’s not like the Sephardic Jews could easily flee into France after 1940. The Axis powers had colonized Algeria, Iraq, Libya, Morocco, and Tunisia at that point, so North African Mizrahi Jews weren’t spared the horrors. While the US government didn’t directly kill Jews, they denied us refugee status during the Shoah, and they did nothing to prevent the spread of multiple US American fascist parties and white suprematist groups. The Vatican, unofficially allied with Fascist Italy, handed over the names and locations of Jews they had converted to Catholicism decades or centuries prior. Families who didn’t even know they were ethnically Jewish were dragged out of Catholic Churches during Mass and sent to slaughterhouses hundreds of miles away. There were precious few diasporic communities throughout the world where Jews were safe in the 30s and 40s.
The Holocaust spanned entire continents. The Holocaust was global.
As an addendum, as I've been thinking about it: The countries that offered refuge to Jews during the Shoah are not as heroic as you may think they are. Jews fleeing to the Soviet Union were shipped to gulags or sent to remote farms with no food in the middle of the Russian interior. They didn't fare well under Stalin. Switzerland accepted a few thousand refugees, but turned away nearly 2/5ths of asylum seekers and left them to die at the border. The Republic of China took in a few thousand more Jews from East Asia and sent them to the Shanghai Ghetto, only for the People's Republic to turn around and kill or exile them all that same decade.
As mentioned above, the USA's Johnson-Reed Act was specifically designed to limit the number of immigrants from countries with large Jewish populations. That act wasn't repealed until the 60's. During the Holocaust, only about a hundred thousand Jewish refugees made it to the US, while hundreds of thousands more died on the wait list. You'll find similar stories from Canada, Portugal, and Great Britain.
The Philippines and the Dominican Republic took in a measly two-thousand Jewish refugees combined. The British Mandate limited Jewish refuge to Palestine to about 20,000. And every other country that accepted Jewish refugees eventually fell to Axis control. That's it. Those are all the countries. Nobody else would take us.
The Holocaust was global. Many more countries than Germany still have direct blood on their hands and reparations still to pay. But every country on Earth failed us to some extent in our hour of need. There are less Jews alive today than there were in 1939. And that's because, no matter where you're from, your country failed to protect us from human history's largest genocide.
Oh my god, once again reminding people that Jews in the SWANA region being scared of being murdered if Israel is dismantled are not comparable to white Americans and Canadians being scared of indigenous sovereignty. The entire world, and that includes Muslim countries, has a very very long history of violently expelling and brutally murdering its Jewish communities; Israel itself has many, many refugees and descendents of refugees from other countries in Asia and Africa, countries that do not want those people back.
The comparison to white North Americans is absurd, cruel, and ahistorical; the claim that Jewish people lived in happiness and peace and safety in SWANA countries before Israel's founding is a complete fabrication and blatant victim blaming. Many of the countries surrounding Israel and throughout the SWANA region have Jewish populations that can literally be counted on one hand and that isn't because people just abandoned their homes and friends and communities to move to Israel for funsies, it's because many of them were brutally murdered or expelled from their homes, with the rest fleeing out of fear for when they would be next.
I am saying this as a Native person who is 100% in favor of indigenous sovereignty in my home country and who is fully against the treatment of Palestinians by the Israeli government. If you cannot acknowledge how antisemitism is still very much alive and an active danger to Jewish people all across the world and how many people fled to Israel specifically to escape violence, then you really cannot have any sort of meaningful conversation about Israel.

here’s one particularly brutal example. there is one jew left in yemen and afaik he is currently being held prisoner by the houthis for helping other yemenite jews escape. the farhud in iraq is another example, an event that genuinely should be considered to be part of the holocaust. over half the population of israel’s jews are refugees from north africa and west asia. tens of thousands are ethiopian jews who fled religious persecution. many of these jews had to be air lifted or smuggled out. countries like egypt confiscated every single possession and bit of money from jewish refugees leaving those countries, they fled with quite literally nothing but the clothing on their backs. nearly a million people displaced with nowhere to go but israel.
these vibrant communities were thousands of years old. they held so much culture and history, and now they are gone because of the conscious decision by governments and individuals to act on their antisemitism. and this is not ancient history. this started only a few decades ago and is still ongoing. this is people who are still alive, still being pushed out of these countries, and who make up a huge portion of the jews living in israel. if you ever hope to understand why israeli jews think and react the way they do, you should be looking at it through the lens of refugees with immense trauma and anger, not your white great great grandpa who came to america by choice for prosperity.
as an autistic jew, passover is objectively the best holiday because it’s a dinner party with a script that everyone has to follow
as another autistic jew, passover is objectively the worst holiday because i can’t eat any of my normal foods and that’s horrible
As a 3rd autistic jew, I agree with both, but *Also* passover is the best holiday because as long as I can reapply a special interest to the pesach story I can talk about it whenever
But its the Worst holiday because there is mandatory cleaning with a deadline before
As a 4th autistic jew I think there are merits to many of these points but wanted to bring up that the food is basically the same every year, which is really nice and predictable
But passover also sucks because you’re expected to read with people watching you
4 Jews, 6 opinions. You did it, y’all! You brought that old Jewish joke to life! <3
This is the hot coffee case all over again isn’t it
No it isn't. The hot coffee case involved an elderly woman getting 3rd degree burns (where your skin is cooked off of your body) because a McDonalds served coffee at just about boiling, despite having many complaints about burns in the past. Also, the woman suing only asked for medical costs, the jury slapped a huge punitive judgement on top of that.
Yeah that’s what I mean. Like is this case really what’s happening in this headline or a corporate smear campaign
The TL;DR (i read the the thing on classaction.org)
Kraft says their single serve cups are ready in 3.5 minutes total. True, it take 3.5 minutes to microwave the cup, but there's more prep time and the instructions call for more ingredients, such as water. There's also the additional time it take to stir in the cheese powder. So in actuality, it could take closer to 5-6 minutes (estimating here).
Because Kraft is selling the speed and convenience of the single serve, it's sold at a premium (11 bucks for an 8 pack, excluding tax, which yowza!), which is much higher than similar products that, in reality, would take as much time to prepare as the Velveeta.
Like I can't speak for everyone but I see those Velveeta cups at the grocery store and they're more expensive than even the other Kraft single serves, and you just know it's not because of the Velveeta powder.
This is a class action lawsuit. The plaintiff isn't getting all 5 million, it'll go to everyone who is *COPD with chronic bronchitis ad voice* entitled to financial compensation.
The firm representing the plaintiff specializes in cases like this, which also includes cases such as Frito-Lay lying about not using real lime in their "hint of lime" Tostito chips (so they can charge more), Kellogg lying about how much fruit they (don't) put in their fruit pop-tarts in spite of the advertising (so they can charge more), the use of synthetic vanilla in premium goods claiming to have real vanilla (so they can charge more), and, oh yeah, arsenic in baby food.
If you're wondering why this matters, consider that this isn't a MRE. It needs prep, not just in time but in additional ingredients, which would be damned inconvenient at best if, say, you didn't have access to water. This, and the time issue, is, in a very real sense, false advertising. It stands to reason that Kraft made a decent profit off this false advertising.
In a similar vein (see: "hint of lime" chips not having lime but a vaguely defined "natural flavoring"), it's about truth in the advertised product, and that the company knew it was lying to its customers. Like if Special K isn't putting real blueberries in its cereal (just pineapple and blue dye), but advertising the cereal as having those blueberries, what happens if a kid allergic to pineapple, or allergic to the dye used, eats the cereal and has a reaction? What if there's no water to make the damn macaroni and cheese?
Cases like this give the more serious cases (ARSENIC. BABY FOOD.) more of a legal foothold.
You can't really say "burn corporations to the ground" or "lol kill jeff bezos" and in that same breath call the plaintiff a stupid Karen or whatever for calling out the obvious bullshit Kraft is pulling here. Those single serve cups are freaking expensive for what you get and are sold at a markup because they promise a convenience that they don't actually deliver on.
