Kagami felt the whoosh of the locker room door open, as a light draft played with her hair, and tickled into her nose was the fresh scent of Adrien Agreste.

Adrien was more than just her competitor, more than just her friend.

Kagami knew this, as the physiology of her entire body would flop every time she witnessed his view.

Her heart pounded harshly against her ribcage. Her cheeks flushed beet-red. Her breathing became abnormal. Her stomach would turn into irregular knots.

Admiring him, admiring his every part, his pure existence.

It was all over when he shot his perfect smile.

“Hey, Kagami!” He chirped, and to her ears, his voice was the sound of birds chirping in the morning, was like a melody not to be tempered with. It was delicate, it was soft.

And it was the voice he’d use to whisper sweet nothings to Marinette.

His lips parted into a friendly smile.

And she wished she could kiss those lips if it meant she could get a taste of Marinette’s.

In which Adrien panics, and Chat Noir is there to comfort him.

Things hadn’t turned out the way Chat Noir had expected.

If anyone would have told him that he would be trapped in a shrinking metal box with Adrien Agreste, he wouldn’t have believe them.

Chat Noir silently cursed quietly. As he was kicking down the walls of the metal box and yelled for help, Adrien pressed himself against the walls of the slowly shrinking box.

“I don’t think anyone can hear us, Chat Noir. Can’t you use your cataclysm?”

There was a slight tremble in his voice. Adrien was afraid. It didn’t matter if Chat could see his quivering lips through his night vision; he could tell how much stress Adrien was under.

Another one of Adrien’s crazy fans had gotten akumatized after the model was being chased around all over the city. Out of respect for any civilian of Paris, Chat was left with the sole duty to get him away from a stampede of craziness.

Chat wasn’t so attentive to the model’s high luxury life, but he knew that this boy had some heart. He knew he was worthy of rescuing.

But a small thought in his mind told him that Adrien Agreste would have been one of the last people he wanted to be trapped with.

And yet, here he he was. Trapped. With Adrien. Some luck he had.

She went by the name of Ladybug.

“What’s your name?” Adrien asked, childlike excitement not leaving his breath.

“Ladybug,” she answered simply.

Adrien gave her a warm giggle. “No, I mean, what’s your name name?”

The girl gave him a quick squeeze on his hand before she let go. She held a finger to her lips, giving him a wink. “A superhero never reveals her identity.”

Adrien picked up on the girl’s stubbornness; there was no use in pushing. “Oh, uh, okay… I guess I’ll start calling you Ladybug then!”

Ladybug’s eyes lit up, her lips weaving into a wide grin that made Adrien’s heart skip a beat.

She cleared her throat, breaking eye contact. “Let me fix you up.” Ladybug reached inside her black-and-red fanny pack and held out a bandaid between her fingers. “A superhero always comes prepared.”

She kneeled down, peeling off the bandaid and pressing it gently on Adrien’s scraped knee.

She paused, frozen as she eyed his bandages knee.

“Uh, Ladyb—“

Ladybug quickly gave his knee a small peck before she stood back up, blushing profusely.

“S-sorry! I don’t know why I did that!” she buried her rosy red face in her hands.

Adrien felt the heat rise to his cheeks, but ignored it, slowly reaching for her hand so he could see her face, and kissed between her knuckles.

“There. That’s fair, right?” Adrien smiled. “Now we both got a kiss from each other!”

Ladybug gasped joyfully, her wide grin returning as if she hadn’t been embarrassed just a few seconds ago. Still, the redness in her cheeks hadn’t subsided.

Summary: Ladybug tries to convince herself that going to the fair with Chat Noir isn’t a date.

It totally is though.

“Hey, Ladybug… you wanna come to the summer fair with me this weekend?”

Ladybug nuzzled in Chat Noir’s blanket as she sat beside him. The two sat on a picnic blanket above the roof. Observing her partner’s face, she noticed how the bright moonlight gently framed up his messy hair and sparked his eyes just right.

It wasn’t that chilly tonight, but Chat insisted on bringing a blanket in case it got colder that night. Patrols would usually last for hours, but any time spent with Chat felt fast.

Raising an eyebrow, Ladybug’s eyes glistened. “The summer fair?”

“Yeah, we should go, just the two of us,” Chat perked.

Ladybug’s heart raced. No way… The fair? Just the two of them? Her mind started buzzing with thoughts and questions. But she remained her cool.

“I’m sure you’d like to have other friends tag along, right?” Ladybug questioned. “I mean, wouldn’t you want to go with own your friends as a civilian?”

Chat shrugged. “Sure, but you’re my friend too, Ladybug. It’s been a while since we’ve spent time together outside of patrols and fighting bad guys. Besides, it’ll be fun.”

More thoughts infiltrated her mind. For one, if Chat was simply asking to tag along with her as a friend, then that meant that he couldn’t possibly be in love with her anymore, right? Despite Chat’s playful antiques, she had noticed that the teasing had died down dramatically, and Chat’s demeanor had significantly matured. Of course this would happen though; it was only a matter of time after Ladybug had continuously rejected him. She was sure Chat was only respecting her boundaries. Actually by now, he was probably over her already, given the fact that his flirtatious style had slowly faded away. But even now, Ladybug questioned if Chat still had some feelings he held onto, maybe even just a bit.  

But Ladybug wasn’t about to press and drown herself in constant questions and uncertainties. It was best to avoid thoughts like these. She couldn’t allow herself to think even once about his feelings. Or hers either.

Still, Chat Noir knew her. It didn’t matter if he didn’t know who she was out of costume. He had witnessed her at her worst and her best.

Chat Noir was the one who would keep her in check when he decided that she wasn’t making a rational decision. Chat Noir was the one who encouraged her when her morale was low. He was the one who fought beside her, who was there for her during the toughest missions and during her worst days. He was there when she needed cheering up, but also there on their good days, when they’d captured an akuma with ease. He was the one who made her laugh to the point where her sides hurt and tears would stream down her face.

It had always been the two of them. And Ladybug was more than comfortable with spending quality time with Chat Noir.

But going to the fair was different. This was outside of missions and patrols. If she went to the fair with him, she’d be stepping right into uncharted territory. There weren’t any purple butterflies to deakumatize, no Parisian civilians to evacuate from danger, no attacks of akumatized victims to dodge, no Lucky Charms and Cataclysms to summon… Going to this fair meant they would drop their role as superheroes; they were spending time as more than just partners. This time around, Ladybug would be practically vulnerable as though she wasn’t wearing her costume. And the thought of being alone with Chat Noir made her head spin.

Summary: Ladybug learns what’s temporary and what’s infinite.

“Just looking up at the sky makes me realize that we’re all just… small. We may have problems that we think are big, but the world just keeps spinning. The stars stay alive.”

She turned her head back towards the night sky and fixed her eyes at a particular star that glowed brighter, then dimmer; she couldn’t help but notice that the blinking matched the melody Chat Noir’s steady breathing.

The words he had spoken were left hanging in the air. Small problems. The galaxies up above from them wouldn’t care. The universe, its corners infinitely traveling and expanding. And she, everything tangible, only such a speck of dust.

She couldn’t imagine what kind of issues Chat Noir dealt with in his personal life to make him bring up something so… existential, to say the least. But Ladybug couldn’t find herself grappling with the fact that her partner would ever experience something so painful. The way he spoke tonight, it was evident that he thought his problems were irrelevant, passing, like it meant nothing and did not matter.

“Chat,” Ladybug swallowed the hard lump in her throat. “I want you to know that… even if I don’t know a lot about your personal experiences, I still care about you.”

“Of course. Why bring up something I already know, m’lady?”

“You’re talking like your problems don’t matter.”

“I’m talking like they do matter, but they’re just small.”

Ladybug wrinkled her noise. “I don’t know what you mean by that.”

Chat craned his head to meet Ladybug’s gaze, her stomach twisting and heart pounding against her ribcage. A familiar glow presented itself in his eyes, and sprinkled in them too with what seemed like stars, just like the sky, but more vast and familiar.

“My mother taught me something when I was younger.  Everything may seem like the end of the world, feelings might feel heavy and big. But when you look at the perspective of, say, other planets across the galaxy, everything you’re experiencing is actually pretty small. They’re temporary, they pass, and then you’re okay again.”

“Why are you in pain, Chat?” Ladybug blurted, and immediately regretted it, cheeks flushing with embarrassment. She recovered by clearing her throat and adding, “I mean, what I mean to say was… Why are you bring this up? What are you going through?”

Chat blinked, markedly a little shocked by her question. “Actually, I’ve been okay on my end of my personal life… Things might be hard, but I’ll leave it at that. What I’m worried about is you, m’lady.”

Castle duties are everything Prince Adrien and Ladybug have ever known.

Until Ladybug has to deal with the prince’s stupid self-sacrificing, his stupid notions, and her stupid feelings for him.

“Training hard, aren’t you?” Ladybug rose a brow as her lips curved to a smile.

“You could say that, in the least.” He teased, “What do you think? Am I finally stronger than you?”

Ladybug snorted, lightly punching Adrien on the shoulder and playfulness and pride surfacing. “You wish you were. I’ve trained all my life. You only started a year ago.”

“You’re probably right.” The teasing glint in Adrien’s eyes quickly diminished as he leaned himself against the castle wall. “You’ve always protected me, m’lady. When do I get my chance to protect you?”

Her nose wrinkled at the ridiculous notion. “My prince, you’re always saying the strangest things. It’s not your duty to protect me.”

“Duty is all we’ve ever known, huh?” His gaze settled onto hers, the two of them only inches apart. Being aware of that made Ladybug’s stomach twist in all sorts of ways. “What if… we had a moment where we didn’t have to think about all that?”

“What do you mean?”

“If we weren’t restrained to all this duty stuff, all this responsibilities and roles that we have to uphold as a prince and a guard. What if…”

The distance between them narrowed, and Ladybug could practically feel the warmth radiating from Adrien’s rosy cheeks. Her pulse quickened, softening her gaze onto his lips. She didn’t know she was holding her breath until her lungs demanded oxygen.

She released a sharp breath, pulling herself back, and feeling every bit of her being succumb to a bright red that matched the shade on Adrien’s face.

“It’s… late.” She attempted through her pounding chest. “You should get some rest.”

“R-right!” Adrien replied with a slight crack in his voice. He then cleared his throat in attempts to regain his composure. “I hope I get the chance to protect you, Ladybug. When that time comes, I promise I will.”

She gave him a calm smile, despite her heart still thumping violently. “Silly notions, my prince. Your mind… It’s full of them.”

He returned the smile. “I know.” Adrien gently shut the double door, bringing with him the moonlight that still rested in his frame, and rested upon his lips was the kiss that could’ve been.

It’s Nice To Have A Friend

Friendships are easy. Beyond that? Different story.

If he gets to experience this story with Marinette, though, Adrien will take his chances if it means staying with her beyond their years of childhood and throughout marriage.

Excitement rushed over him as they walked to Marinette’s place. Adrien could practically taste her parents’ baked goods. The mere thought of seeing the Dupain-Chengs made him feel warm, eliminating any chill he was feeling from the winter day.

As Marinette shoved her hand into one jacket pocket, then quickly the other, her eyes slowly widened with realization.

Adrien turned to meet the girl’s eyes. “What is it?”

She slapped her forehead and let out a disappointed groan. “Why am I such an airhead? I left one of my gloves back at the locker room! Lemme run back—“

“Wait, you can have mine,” Adrien countered as he held out a mitten-clothed hand.

Marinette scrunched her brows with skepticism. “But aren’t you going to be cold?”

Adrien perked up as he made a clever suggestion. “Not unless we share.”

“Share?”

“Yeah! We can share the mitten, for my left hand and one for your right hand.”

Marinette lifted a brow. “Seriously?”

“I think it’ll be way more effective. It’s called exchanging body heat,” he smiled playfully.

Marinette let out a snort of laughter, giving in to her friend’s suggestion. She slipped her cold hand into Adrien’s gloved one—or struggling to—before finally succeeding.

“Huh, you’re right! This is much better!” Marinette beamed.

On the other hand, Adrien was now having second thoughts about his plan, his cheeks flushing from a light pink to a glowing red.

Day 1: My Prince

Sleeping Beauty AU, in which Adrien is the cursed prince awoken by a kiss of the unnamed lady in red.

Once upon a dream, Adrien saw her. Bright red lips, so red that it shamed the reddest rose, eyes so blue that even the evening skies couldn’t compare.

Adrien spent his days mostly humming a tune as he skipped the forest, singing back to the birds; he acquainted himself with the squirrels, the rabbits, as well as the owls. Even the tiniest insect would intrigue him enough.

He had been blessed with such wonderful caregivers, Tikki and Plagg, but throughout his life, he couldn’t help but feel that something was missing. Or someone.

Until she appeared.

The lady in red. Steadily approaching before him with her steed. Dressed tidily, a mask that covered her face but enough to see her brilliant blue gaze, her polka-dotted red cape fitted to a knot over her shoulders.

Yes, she was his reason to visit the forest. The lady in red that went by the name of Ladybug.

Chapter 4: one last view

Marinette is torn. Adrien, just as much.

Age: 11 years old

This year, the school decided that the safest way for the children to get to school was to have more bus stops around the area. The one bus stop that Adrien had to hop into just so happened to be the bus stop by the sycamore tree.

He wouldn’t have minded having the bus stop next to the tree, if only Marinette hadn’t disturbed the quiet and peaceful morning with announcements of how far the school bus was from them.

Adrien Agreste was definitely not a morning person. Mornings were already dreadful enough, and it didn’t help that his sleep schedule was constantly thrown off. Yet again, Adrien would probably need to take another nap during his French history class.

“4 blocks away!” Marinette called from atop the sycamore tree.

His eye began to twitch, just a bit. Adrien took a breath in.

“3 blocks away!”

He took a breath out. Don’t bother with it, Adrien. Let her be.

“2 blocks away -!”

Adrien gave in. He cupped his hands around his mouth, enough for the girl to hear him from the treetop. “Hey, Marinette, would you mind - “

Before he could continue, an unfamiliar voice greeted him.

“Hey, dude, this whole bus stop thing is kinda weird, isn’t it?”

Turning to the dark-skinned boy with a red cap and glasses, Adrien was taken aback when he held out his hand in front of him.

“I’m Nino, by the way.”

He took Nino’s hand for a handshake. “Adrien.”

“Nice to meet you, dude,” Nino smiled. “I never had to take the bus. I’d always ride my bike to school, even in the winter. Disappointing that I won’t get to have my bike rides to school anymore.”

“1 block away!”

Adrien grumbled under his breath.

Nino glanced above the tree. “Well, I’m guessing we’re going to have her report to us on how far the bus is every morning, huh?”

“I guess so -“

“Hey, Adrien!”

Adrien jumped as he felt a warm hand upon his shoulder.

“M-Marinette!” How did she even get down from the tree so fast? She was so high up... Adrien swore that this girl was not human.

“Isn’t the tree gorgeous?” Marinette exclaimed with excitement, admiration still apparent in her eyes. She leaned in closer to Adrien. “You should climb up there with me. The view from up there is just breathtaking!”

Cold sweat ran down Adrien’s back. Why was she getting so damn close to him? The lack of physical space was what took his breath away - specifically, it was making him suffocate.

Adrien stepped back. He had to find words to say no to climbing that tree. No way would he climb that high, and no way would he climb up there with Marinette.

“Uh, I would like to, but it’s, um, actuallyquiteanuglytree.”

“Quiet an ugly tree?” Marinette repeated slowly, furrowing her brows.

Adrien internally screamed once he realized what he had said.
