Surely they'll come to get me.
Surely they didn't love me all that time for this.

Before the launch one of the mission scientists took Laika home to play with his children. In a book chronicling the story of Soviet space medicine, Dr. Vladimir Yazdovsky wrote, "Laika was quiet and charming … I wanted to do something nice for her: She had so little time left to live."
a comet's tail of breaking
syllables that even now leave
their trail: Laika, in. Laika, lay.
Good girl, Laika. Wait. Stay.

I did not know
that no one was planning
to bring me back, either.
'Cause like constellations a million years away
Every good intention, every good intention
Is interpolation, a line we drew in the array
Looking for the faces
Looking for the shapes in the silence
They say that, from space,
the Earth looks like
a small, blue ball. I'll throw it
for you, Laika, if you'll chase it,

[To orbit high above a world so
blue, welcome to your funeral
troika - Sputnik 2.] Are you scared
yet, Laika? Are you scared?

we are pack animals,
we form bonds with everything
that we see. my battery is
low and its getting dark
It's okay, it's okay
My love will fall with grace

Work with animals is a source of suffering to all of us. We treat them like babies who cannot speak. The more time passes, the more I'm sorry about it. We shouldn't have done it… We did not learn enough from this mission to justify the death of the dog.
