you will never catch me complaining about an actress on a tv show having an imperfectly concealed pregnancy or a character going on a sudden trip somewhere while her actress is on maternity leave. so many actresses (and women working in any other field) are fired, punished and pressured into making reproductive decisions for their employers' convenience & if i have to try a bit harder to suspend my disbelief then that's absolutely what i'm going to do if it means people are getting to exercise reproductive & bodily autonomy without punishment

and like it's just so fucking apparent to me that these writers do not care about women of color in the slightest. this entire season serves as proof of that, but ESPECIALLY this finale dude. they refuse to close off any of these women's stories meaningfully or from a place of care: al-hashimi is berated (again) and told she can't run an ED properly, samira is still wishy-washy on her future in medicine, santos literally gets nothing to do other than sleep. in samira's literal FINAL scene, all she does is talk about robby. she has to put her emotions and worries on the back-burner just so she can reassure him. like that's fucked! this is her FINAL scene!!!

and the situation with al-hashimi--where he essentially implies that her disability makes her unfit to run the ED--never gets any real closure from her perspective. we see her cry in her car for like a second; compared to robby who gets this huge whooping speech from abbott about how he belongs at the ED. and, for a second, i thought that maybe abbott would try to speak to al-hashimi as well. i thought maybe he would hear her side of things, reaffirm her medial prowess, and tell her the same: that she has every right to be in the ED. BUT NO! why on earth would we ever have a scene like that? because robby is the only one here who deserves to be mollified and treated with haste.

listen, as a mentos fan, i don't hate the fact santos’s narrative thread ends with her kicking it with mel, but i despise the fact that all her accumulated tension just dies down/fully disappears. i would argue that she and robby were given similar arcs by the writers, with the pressures of their jobs causing both of them to lash out at others and even consider harming themselves. but ever since they put her on charting, all of that vanishes. the show refuses to spend time dwelling on her daily traumas or how they affect her. i'm sure you can guess why--so that they can prioritize robby’s internal and external conflicts instead. like we have NO definitive conclusion on what's going to happen with garcia, or the scalpel in her pocket, or with her status under al-hashimi’s leadership. these were huge pillars in her emotional erosion, so why is that they just don't pertain to her suddenly?

victoria probably has it the best out of all of them, but it still doesn't sit quite right with me that her realization that she could truly excel in psychiatry is prompted by whitaker. not even on the basis of like "oh, white guy has to get the misaligned brown girl on the right, true track," but like has whitaker seen her in action once? wouldn't it make so much more sense for mckay to help victoria come to that conclusion?

all in all, great season finale if you're a white guy.

I'm sorry if someone has said this with more eloquence and with a wider scope on The Pitt (I'm pretty casual viewer comparatively), but for me Whitaker is why I don't respect writing Samira off. When Robby has a WOC narrative echo, it tortures her and ends her career (or at least that actress' time on the show). When Robby has a white boy narrative echo, he's written like a prince with plot armor.

I don't think Whitaker is badly written. But when you put a meek, mild white man in the center of complex women who have panic attacks or bad coping mechanisms or get mean or struggle sometimes with their neurodivergence, there is an echo of "women be trippin'" there. Yes, it's nice to see competent, capable, compassionate women be allowed to be messy, a little off the rails, and to see them stumble, but currently Whitaker's bad traits are "too long at farm" and the bubblegum pop memeification of his relationship to Santos paints her as a feral creature and him as a patient and knowing sage. It'd be one thing if they made Whitaker self aware enough to see this aspect of Robby's mental health crisis, if he was like, hey, you're being so kind to me and showing me grace, but x, y, z. Or if they really got into Whitaker's over involved, bleeding heart tipping into making him a worse doctor or neglectful friend.

Because they aren't, the optics matter. These are people in a story. Part of a writer/director's responsibility is zooming out, seeing how characterization plays together, seeing if it still wants to tell the story you want to tell, and correcting where needed. Either no one zoomed out on The Pitt re: Robby and his favored children OR the only people zooming out have a bias - unintentional as it may be - that makes them saint white men, torture women ESPECIALLY women of color, and so far resign men of color to comedic effect.
