Everyone talks about how baelor would have been the greatest king of the targaryen dynasty had he just gotten the chance to get there. And no doubt he was raised with this expectation, surrounded by countless voices that took his natural affinity for leadership and gracious nature as further reinforcement of his birthright. But do you think that maybe in the moments before his death, just for a split second during his last few seconds of consciousness, Baelor felt just the slightest twinge of relief? Ah, at least now he would finally be free from the overwhelming pressure of his birthright that had been his companion since before he could remember. At least now he could breathe easy, if only for a moment before everything turns black-

i think a lot about theobald's mistrust of lapin to start the season. initially it's unclear why this hostility exists, which is why people immediately tried to explain it through an interpersonal history between the two characters. when all you have to go off of is episode 1, it's easy to assume that they dislike each other because of a failed romantic relationship, but as you watch the season and the adventuring parties a couple things become abundantly clear.

theobald doesn't trust lapin because lazuli didn't trust the church. he loves arcane magic and he sees the way the bulbian church forbids its use. lapin is the living embedded embodiment of the church in the castle. he is a constant reminder of the way lazuli's work has lain untouched, unresearched for decades. theobald loves amethar and would never blame him for candia's magical progress lying fallow for 20 years, even if that's who is actually to blame. it's easy to blame lapin for what he represents, even though he personally is not responsible and does not even wield bulbian magic.

from a metagame level, in session 0 zac is more or less forced to play lapin as sneakier and evasive in combat. he has a secret and he can't be found out before the show even starts. murph and theobald see this behavior and it gives murph a reason to play theo as hostile to lapin. zac the player can't rebut the accusations or explain himself without giving away the game, and he's not going to just let theobald bully lapin, so he argues back.

this is why to me the 'oh shut up' line works. like lapin doesn't need theo's apology. he knew the game the whole time even when theo didn't. he needed theo to not know the truth because the stakes were too high to let anyone into his secret. theo's dislike of lapin was founded in real deeply held feelings of losing people he cared about and seeing the church suppress what he loved, even if lapin wasn't the right target for that anger. lapin argued back because he wasn't going to let himself be a doormat and if theo hated him because he was bulbian, that was just a testament to the ruse working. he doesn't need to hear 'i misjudged you chancellor' because lapin has known that the entire time and he was counting on it. he needed theo to believe that for his survival. they could never be close in any capacity while lapin held that secret.

i really wish people hadn't fixated so heavily on the 'they're divorced' headcanon. i think the relationship they had based on all of the text rather than just the first episode is so much more interesting than that, especially when the 'they're divorced' thing flies in the face of the things we learn about theobald after lapin's death. they're ships passing in the night. they never had a chance to be anything to each other but coworkers who didn't get along. because lapin dies that's all they'll ever be and theo just goes on living knowing that.

baelor learns to braid from his mom and becomes his family's resident braider, despite preferring shorter hair himself :')

1) practicing on maekar while his mom teaches him how on aerys. // 2) all of them teenagers hanging out in baelor's room. maekar's being teased about his new haircut lol. // 3) in a war tent at redgrass, relaxing via something familiar and comforting for them both. (maekar's hair here is inspired by one of daemon's looks in hotd!)
