long ass dissertation on car seat headrest guitar tone

alrighty fuckos (the three freaks who will read this) here's a breakdown of all of the guitar sounds over the history of car seat headrest and if anyone asks I will *attempt* to explain tones of specific songs etc. (I am a massive nerd) and if will toledo was still active on tumblr I would have many questions

anyhoo, let's start with the

PRE MATADOR ERA:

I know this covers like 80% of the discography, but it's all really the same until you get to tod. when it was just will, he played a black fender player telecaster (mexican made from the 90s apparently) and just plugged into audacity/garage band/logic and made the tone that way. the reason it sounds the way it does is because he mixed on headphones (bad idea generally) so you have to listen to it on headphones to hear anything properly

TEENS OF DENIAL:

teens of denial's tone is very different because now ethan ives is playing guitar, but this isn't necessarily everything. toledo played the black tele of legend into (shock, horror) an actual amp: a fender twin reverb. and... he used pedals (aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa) a boss ds-1 and ds-2 and panda particle. this is the reason for how gloriously crunchy the tone is in teens of denial. HOWEVER, remember ethan? he played a gibson sg (the one from ac/dc and school of rock) at the time and anything with humbuckers is gonna be crunchy. there's not really any information I can find about ethan's rig at this time other than a marshall plexi, unfortunately. I wanna know what it is because I want the tone :(

TWIN FANTASY:

now, we have the problem of twin fantasy. If I had to guess, it was recorded mostly on the tele still, as if you listen to songs like bodys it is rather screechy, and this is generally a hallmark of the twin fantasy tone. the acoustic parts on all the of the albums so far have been on a yamaha fd-02, with the exception of the tiny desk concert from tod era that was on an epiphone (for some reason??? I wanna know that story) anyways getting back to twin fantasy. there's not as much information out there as teens of denial, and it's significantly complicated by naked giants joining the twin fantasy tour to confuse things further. HOWEVER in a couple shows we see without naked giants will plays a fender jaguar, and I don't believe we've seen the tele in the god what 7 years since then, which leads me to believe he sold it or it was stolen and he got the jag (he's got a jaaaaaaaaag) as a replacement

MADLO:

thank god for this record because now I don't have to dig through obscure bits of information and concert photos to figure out what's being played. madlo was also all tele, BUT it's now ethan ives' '79 strat, instead of the (pair???) of sgs. I can tell you that the rig for the madlo guitar tone was the strat into a mesa/boogie ta30 or an ac30 which I am so glad we have anything clear at all. WE ALSO HAVE PEDALS YAAAAAAAAAAAAAA he played with a proco rat, analogman ardx20, and jack white's secret second wife the digitech whammy. the acoustic tones are finally not the yamaha but a wechter dreadnought, which I have never even heard of before.

THE SCHOLARS:

now we arrive here, with a second article wherein ethan ives yaps about his rig which is great. this time, the '79 strat has made way for a tele. (which I did not realize when the kexp came out and was wrong about) there is also lot of acoustics on the scholars, which are mostly 12-strings and how you get the catastrophe sounding as good as it does and then very differently live. electrically, ives uses an american pro tele through a chase bliss automatone into an ac15 (or a marshall stack apparently too) and he clearly has a ton of pedals for live stuff. any playing toledo does is on the jaaaaag what looks like directly into the pa or maybe a fender hot rod deville I'm not certain

this will probably be expanded and maybe I'll make a table of all the equipment I know about for each album but we'll see how this does first
