The main witch factional divide is the sunburnt dunces versus the slip slop slap seek & slide queens?
And Team Slip Slap Slop is secretly the heroic underdogs that'll save the world?
There's a lot of attention to detail that comes through in Witch Hat Atelier which is really neat but then it sort of sets up a high expectation that makes it disappointing when the work doesn't bother with the effort.
Like the creative plants & animal designs are a lot of fun. It's like AtLA but more sophisticated.
And the clothing designs are interesting and seemingly based on a better understanding of the histories and possibilities than I have. There's that button row motif. And liripipe witch hats? You'd need a magic spell to keep it on your head but that's okay because they have that covered and the result is really cool. And that shot of the uniform Professor Ozpin gives our protagonist getting put together? Gosh.
And then there'll be an underwater city with an architectural style seemingly not altered the slightest bit from what you'd build on dry land and it feels like such a missed opportunity.
I usually save free game recs for big roundup posts, but I'm making a special exception for Print Gallery of an Artist:
A Brief Exploration Of Recursive Spaces
Unless you are prone to motion sickness, play this one immediately.
"i've really got an intuitive sense of the hyperbolic plane now," says partner, doing ... something.
"no! i'm lost in the spirals!"
"i worry that if i go to bed i'll lose my sense of ..."
"i know it looks like i'm dying all the time."
This is really cool.
Unfortunately I don't have the dexterity & patience it takes to get through it all. Dying over & over isn't fun.
Next show: Witch Hat Atelier.
The first episode feels kinda contrived and protests too much, but whatever I guess.
“I accidentally vitrified my own mom so she's doomed to be gifted eternal youth after we uncover the forbidden magics later and relatedly Professor Ozpin's gonna force me to transition into being the witch I always wanted to be. How terrible!”
I accidentally did a Wikipedia binge about 1st wave feminism and fashion and stumbled upon the 1890s bicycle suit. Do people know about this? Why didn't anyone tell me about this? This is dope as hell.
It's old-fashioned. It's modern. It's butch. It's femme. It's snazzy. It's practical.
Wikipedia talks about the bloomers and the leg-o-mutton sleeves, but I'm also noticing a lot of these outfits have absolute supervillain lapels, which I also like a lot.
does anyone have any tips on maintaining the frankly delusional believe that things will get better
(The Apothecary Diaries spoilers)
Master Jinshi gets a boner while in a tent with his love interest (and also a pile of dead children) and the way this is conveyed to the viewer is that he doubles over in pain. So did he get Peyronie's disease from the HRT or did he wear a tuck into battle?
Are you fucking stupid
Aw shucks Nonny, I almost never get hatemail! It's nice to be noticed.
I am indeed super fucking stupid! Please tell me the errors of my ways. Goddamn I wish someone would tell me.
The thing is. I would eat the grapes. I would eat the pomegranate seeds. I would eat the Turkish delights. It doesn’t matter what the stakes are if you put a little plate of snacks out in front of me I’ll eat them.
If you sent me to an evil fantasy realm and told me that if I ate anything I would die a painful terrible death then set a charcuterie board down in front of me that would be it for me. Like it wouldn’t even be like a torturous internal struggle to not eat the cheese. I wouldn’t even need to be that hungry.
The Apothecary Diaries is a good show. Concubines, eunuchs, and prostitutes, oh my! It's very mystery of the week, but those mysteries do accumulate into bigger arcs, so it works.
I waited until finishing both seasons before looking at its Wikipedia page, so I spent the whole show being increasingly confused about what the world-building is doing.
Most of the show takes place in the Forbidden City (1420 – 1924 CE) and they recently have flintlock pistols (invented in the early 1600s) but Wikipedia says the story is primarily based on the Tang dynasty (618 – 907 CE)???
And the English voice actors astoundingly nail the Chinese pronunciation of “Gaoshun” but absolutely butcher the pronunciation of “Shisui” and also there's a bunch of Japanese names all over the place too? And people are calling each other “tanuki” all the time despite those being native to Japan and despite consistently making me think of giant prehensile magic scrotums every time they're mentioned.
I don't mind the pastiche — pastiches are cool. But in the end the show turned out to be less authoritative and informative about the question “What was up with them court eunuchs?” than I was hoping for after the first couple episodes.
does anyone have the one image of that twink failing to pick up a jug of milk
thank you
1-2/8 btw
Because the artist couldn't resist having the twink's booty sticking out like that, I find this image implausible. There's no way you can perform such a stellar hip hinge and then get foiled by mere milk.
You listen to music regularly? Why? Have you even tried quitting? Could you quit? You get music stuck in your head? Wow. You're so ruined and music brained. I bet you make your partners listen to music with you when you have sex. Music addiction has really ruined a whole generation. You know it's not realistic to expect reverb in real life, right? You're probably so desensitized that you don't even feel anything anymore when you hear a bird singing that it wants some fuck.
I don't have a problem with people listening to music per se, but I do have a problem with the music industry exploiting & mistreating artists.
Personally, I abstain from all music in order to keep my hands clean but really music should just be illegal outright to protect musicians from abuse.
Consider: do you get enough docosahexaenoic acid in your diet?
I appreciate your concern.
I take omega-3 supplements and eat fish sometimes because I'm the world's worst vegan. It very well could be that I'm low in it, but I highly doubt that it's the missing vitamin that will fix me.
I'm also not exercising enough nor eating enough vegetables nor doing my skincare routine consistently enough nor brushing my teeth enough &c. &c. &c. I've done various projects to fix these various things many times over many years but the return on investment is never enough for it to be self-sustaining.
The long-term improvements that I manage to accomplish are all too marginal to get anywhere in a lifetime. And it's very unlikely that whatever the next fix will be will be the thing that breaks through.
Creators being coy about the intended interpretation of their story is tedious. It's like buying an ice cream sunday at an ice cream shop and instead of putting a cherry on top they put a note card there that says “We have cherries, but we're not giving you any. If you have some cherries at home in your fridge maybe you can have one of those later if you want.”
People are going to come up with new & different interpretations of your story regardless of whether you reveal yours! You're withholding information that might add depth to the experience for no actual reason.
Anyway, Mulholland Drive is a really good movie.
have any of y'all nitpickers actually seen the movie
I like this article because it’s not what you think it is.
the world is a strange and wonderous place
