for some of my followers who don’t understand the incredible significance of the term “super predator” here is a quick video on the history of it’s usage in the US. To summarize, this term was born out of the fear of increase youth violence that would evolve into gangs of children so violent and amoral that they would wreak havoc in mainstream society. Not only did youth violence eventually decline during this decade but the term “super predator” was almost exclusively used to label young children of color, particularly black children. Rather than investing in schools, rehabilitating youth in the juvenile system, or even helping rebuilding impoverished communities of color, the racist hysteria over the “super predator” lead to a dramatic increase of harsher sentences and incarceration rates for youth of color.
