I was a teenager when I got into Arashi. I’m 31 now; a lot has changed. The past few years I haven’t been following them as closely, but living in Japan, they’ve still been a constant fixture in my life. Just the thought of them still being out there doing their thing after all these yeas has warmed my heart and brought me great comfort. I see them host big national events in fancy clothes and I remember them in that basement prop getting painful massages with stockings over their heads, and I smile: they’ve really done it all.

So when I saw the headlines this morning, I was shocked: Had the whole nakayoshi image been a lie, and I’d been gullible?

But now, having seen their faces and heard their voices and their thoughts, I’m at peace.

Because it’s the opposite: this hiatus or disbanding or whatever you want to call it, it isn’t a result of drama or animosity.

This is a decision made out of love.

They could easily have chosen to continue as a 4-member unit and pretend like the missing member had never been there at all like all those other groups, true Johnny’s style.Yet they chose not to. They’ve talked the talk, now they walk the walk. This only proves what they’ve told us is true. That without these five people together Arashi cannot exist.

A lot has changed, but one thing hasn’t: Arashi will always be a 5-member group.

In my head I knew this bubble would burst, logic told me that they were working so hard and doing so much. It was, unsustainable...

But the ache I feel now is not selfish, more trying to find a way to bookend this chapter of my life that felt as if it would never end.

The five of you helped me find the light when I was in the dark. You brought me back.

I wish you all the happiness you deserve and the respite you need.
