Your room - Middle of the Night
Too much happened that day.
Your mind is full of thoughts and questions that need answers.
Could you have done more for him? Was it enough? Was it too much?
Leaving that dish in his room was definitely risky and could become a problem in the future.
Will Pawbert find out that it was you? Or even worse…his father?
With a frustrated sigh, you got up from bed.
Your gaze fell outside the window.
Bright full moon shining in the clear night sky.
Everything felt so peaceful and magical in the darkness.
A sigh escaped your mouth.
-Maybe something warm will help-
You got up, lit a candle, and exited the room, heading to the kitchen with the light of the trembling flame.
————————————————————————————
He walked down the corridor, covered by the silence of the night and guided by the moonlight.
His steps were as soft as possible.
He sure didn’t want to wake up anyone, especially his father.
At the sight of the kitchen door, he stopped.
Not everybody was sleeping as he thought.
He walked near the door, making no sound, the plate still in his hands.
He didn’t want to meet anyone at all. The plan was just to throw away the food and leave, but apparently, it would’ve been more complicated than that.
After taking a deep breath, he opened the door.
———————————————————————————
You entered the kitchen with a slow movement, and put the candle on the table.
No other light was turned on.
The darkest the better to have no problems.
You took a glass of milk from the fridge. Servants use only. Not the best one, but at least it was something.
Then, you put it in the microwave to warm it up, adding a spoon of honey for the final touch.
You took it back, and leaned on the cabinet. The drink was warming up your hands, as the sweet scent of honey filled the air.
Finally, a moment for yourself to relax.
You bring the warm liquid close to your mouth , when suddenly, you see the door slowly opening.
Your eyes went wide open, as a well-known lynx appeared.
————————————————————————————
The sight of each other left both of you by surprise.
You stand with a shocked look.
He stands on the doorframe, with what was your dinner in his hands.
Pawbert looked at you, embarrassed , didn’t know how to act.
-Oh, hi. I-I didn’t know…I didn’t mean to disturb- without looking at you in the eyes, he left the dish on the table.
-N-no I mean…It is ok, no problem sir - your eyes fell on the plate.
-I found this in my room, and it wasn’t mine, so…yeah, I thought to bring it back here, I suppose -
His eyes wandered in the room, avoiding yours.
His eyes confused at your question, now finally meeting your y/e/c ones.
-I mean- you blinked fast. - You skipped dinner today, sir…I’m sorry-
His gaze fell on the floor, tormenting his hands.
-Yeah I…I wasn’t even hungry by the way so-
-But I found this in my room- he took a step forward - Do you…know who might..?-
You bit your lips and shook your head slowly.
The sparkle in his eyes faded. He looked tired at the food. - Probably…It must’ve been Kitty or Cattrick. -
-Probably…yes- your eyes looking down, at the milk in your hands.
-Well, sorry to have bothered you- he walked to the door to leave.
He put a hand on the doorknob ready to leave, but stopped.
His shoulders lowered as he exhaled a small sigh, and turned to face you again.
You were not ready to face this conversation.
He scratched the back of his head nervously.
-You didn’t have to, so…thank you. And…- his eyes meet the floor.
-Sorry if I acted that way. You were just trying to help and…well it wasn’t nice from me. So…I’m sorry-
You were shocked. Never. Ever. A Lynxley apologized to someone for something. They never made mistakes after all. Or that is what they believe.
You set the glass down near you.
- Look, the situation was… a mess. So please don’t say sorry, you don’t have to, really- you tried to be as calm as possible, but your tension was palpable.
Could you really be honest with him?
Could you really talk freely to a member of that family?
But you thought he was…different.
At least you hoped you so.
-But I want to say something, sir. If I may. -
-Please, call me Pawbert. I'm not really into this "formal" stuff... -
You hesitated a moment before going on. Your hands were grabbing each other nervously.
He looked at you patiently.
-Go on c’mon. I won’t eat you ah-ah -
This time you would’ve avoided it.
You looked him in the eyes with determination.
-I’ve been here since I was born. Each day, a new fight and a new argument. I don’t think anyone deserves this sir_-
-Yeah sorry, Pawbert.- You crossed your arms and lowered your gaze.
- And I don’t like, not being able to do something in those situations. I know I should not feel involved in this but it is just…frustrating.-
He was standing speechless in front of you, with kinda atonished expression.
Didn’t expect someone like a simple maid, would say something like this. To him.
You were ready for the punishment inside of you. That long tongue of yours.
Why can’t you just stay quiet and not involve yourself in this kind of stuff.
He exhaled as he scratched the back of his ears.
-Ah well…you caught me off guard ah ah..didn’t expect these words from someone like you at all.-
You looked up at him, raising an eyebrow.
He pointed out both his hands in defense.
-Nono, I mean, you work for my family, and you have a job to keep so…I didn’t expect someone like you to be so…direct.-
-Well, I also hope to keep my job after this night- After realizing your words, you covered your mouth with your hands, embarrassed. For a moment you forgot who you were talking to.
-I’m so sorry, I didn’t mean to say that-
He giggled at your behaviour.
- You don’t like to mince words, I see -
You blushed, biting the inside of your cheek.
-May I know your name..?-
He looked at you surprised.
-Wait, so you were the daughter of y/m/n, weren’t you? -
-Yes, it was my mother…how you..?-
-She was my mother’s personal maid …before…you know- sadness filled his expression as he lowered his head and his ears.
His mother passed away when both of you were no more than just children. The cause of her death, never emerged from the surface of the investigations by the ZPD. Her body was found one morning, outside the family estate, covered by a pile of snow.
That day, everyone went outside, attracted by his screams of desperation and shock.
You saw the body yourself, meanwhile hiding behind your own mother.
You could still hear Pawbert’s screams of pain.
From that day, everything changed.
Pawbert cleared his throat, recomposing himself and changing the conversation
-However don’t worry, you won’t lose your job. Not cause of me at least-
You smiled at him softly.
-I appreciate what you have done for me, so let’s just keep everything between me and you ok?-
He gave a thumbs-up, smiling awkwardly.
-So…I think I’ll go to sleep for real now. -
He turned his back to you to leave.
-Wait! What about you…eat something then?-
-Uh?- he stopped, looking back at you.
You pointed towards the plate on the table.
-Ah well…yes. Since I don’t know where that came from, I don’t think I’ll risk having problems.-
-I’ll eat double breakfast tomorrow I guess ah-ah-
You turned your back to him, to put the glass, now cold, back in the microwave to warm it up again.
You were frustrated. You couldn’t say nothing but after all, you skipped dinner for him.
-But none should be left without dinner-
Pawbert’s eyes widened. Those words weren’t new to him.
You looked at him, puzzled. - …Sorry? -
-Can you repeat what you just said?-
-None…should be left without… dinner?-
An idea began to form in his head, but he wasn’t sure. Not yet.
You looked at him confused.
He decided to stay evasive.
- Nothing, nothing. Forget it. Just realized it is very late I should…go back to my room. And so should you.-
He came closer and put a hand on your shoulder, taking you by surprise.
-But I really appreciate your words from before. Just…It’s not simple. Between my father and me…so just don’t expose yourself too much again, ok? It can be dangerous.-
You blushed softly, nodding in silence.
Without thinking, your hand went up on his forehead, brushing your thumb softly on his scar.
-At least it’s healing..-
He couldn’t move. Watching you, he couldn’t help but enjoy a small act of tenderness once again in his small useless life.
- It…it is - he whispered.
It was in that moment, that you caught yourself mesmerized by his warm honey eyes.
In those few seconds, you saw all his sorrow hidden behind that silly attitude. Behind that smile, there was a pitch-black hole. A broken soul. A silent scream.
The sound of the microwave startled you both and made you flinch, removing your hands from each other nervously.
-WELL gotta go now… - he clasped his hands together to relax the tension, and walked towards the door.
He disappeared in the dark corridor.
You were alone again. You took back the glass, now warm again.
The hot drink in your hands, filled the air once more with the sweet scent of honey.
You took a sip from it, enjoying the pleasing sensation of peace.
Too much happened to elaborate all at once.
You threw away what was your dinner, and washed both your glass and the plate.
What you needed now was sleep.
You took what was left of the candle, and led back to your bedroom as well.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Pawbert left the kitchen with a mind full of questions.
But the only possible answer to one of them, for now, was lying in the trash can of his bedroom.
Once arrived in his room, he locked the door, then searched for what he was looking for.
He threw it away just before leaving the room moments ago, and as he expected, it was on the surface.
Thank god the other part of the pile was just paper and stationery scraps.
He unwrapped the small piece of paper, then read it again.
Pawbert folded it, and put it in the desk drawer.
——————————------------------------------------
The candle died right after entering your bedroom.
You left the remains on a shelf near the bed, and curled up in the warm blankets.
You were happy. The goal wasn’t exactly to find him in the middle of the night and befriend him but, you were not disappointed at all.
"All that effort and he didn’t even eat in the end."
These thoughts were leading you to fall asleep.
"But what about what I said…He seemed strange about that."
Your eyes snapped open. You felt your heart racing faster than a car, and your body warmed up from shame as you realized what you had done.
You grabbed your pillow with frustration, smashing it over your face.
