I do believe some new ppl get upset at AoB because it’s not an idealistic view of the world.
It presents problems, and the answer isn’t straight forward. It can’t be solved by just wanting the world to be better or fairer. True change is smth that cannot be done even in the span of one generation.
Take the orphans in the temple. They’re treated like property and left to die, with no control of their lives.
When presented with that, our instinct is to be disgusted and try to solve it as fast as we can.
But because of politics, it’s told to us that it’s not something we can change. Which sucks. Which, whoever entered this series with only wish fulfillment in mind, would find enraging.
“Why can’t I make the world a better place just by noticing these people are morally corrupt?”
AoB functions like an actual society. It asks, what system would be in place for things to get like this?
And upon finding it, while it knows it has to break the wheel, knows that’s impossible on its own.
For now, what a little commoner girl can do, is to steer the wheel. Save as many ppl as she can within the system.
And I think that can piss people off. “Why are you working with the system?! Shouldn’t you be breaking it?!”
But the point of AoB isn’t to sell you baseless ideologies. It’s to tell you that real, tangible change, takes time.
In part 5 the conditions of the orphanage show that, you can climb the ladder. Dirk was able to become a noble, to eventually become director and be the one to change the system.
Myne may have been the one to start it, but it would take decades and the effort of those she inspired to realize her dream - eventually.
I think that’s much more valuable than an empty “just change it!”

They got the fandom wrong, the source material wrong, and even just the most basic details wrong. Like. Bruh. If you don't like pedophilia, Bookworm is the series for you. It is Scathing. And, at times, highly specific. Like. Wow. I've never seen a fandom so uniquely consistent and united in this.

If I may chime in, I actually tell people immediately because it's a great example of Miya Kazuki doing something usually handled terribly very well.
Initially, Myne is a woman in her twenties in the body of a child, but the narrative doesn't use that as an excuse to be weird. She's pushed into political engagements that are appropriate for her physical age, and has age-appropriate crushes aimed her way, but there isn't any legitimate romance until she's physically an adult, if you can even call it that.
Another great example in this same vein is that all child predation in the series happens offscreen, and is only told through the survivors.
Miya Kazuki knows where she wants the camera. Just the fact that she has this sort of setup while never using it to be creepy tells you a lot about her priorities as an author. And her priority is to not be a creep. ❤️❤️❤️❤️✨✨✨✨
