They got the fandom wrong, the source material wrong, and even just the most basic details wrong. Like. Bruh. If you don't like pedophilia, Bookworm is the series for you. It is Scathing. And, at times, highly specific. Like. Wow. I've never seen a fandom so uniquely consistent and united in this.

If I may chime in, I actually tell people immediately because it's a great example of Miya Kazuki doing something usually handled terribly very well.
Initially, Myne is a woman in her twenties in the body of a child, but the narrative doesn't use that as an excuse to be weird. She's pushed into political engagements that are appropriate for her physical age, and has age-appropriate crushes aimed her way, but there isn't any legitimate romance until she's physically an adult, if you can even call it that.
Another great example in this same vein is that all child predation in the series happens offscreen, and is only told through the survivors.
Miya Kazuki knows where she wants the camera. Just the fact that she has this sort of setup while never using it to be creepy tells you a lot about her priorities as an author. And her priority is to not be a creep. ❤️❤️❤️❤️✨✨✨✨

tamora pierce always was trans positive though because she innately understood the concept of gender and how it actually applied to people and to the world. her understanding is not surface level like many writers who’ve been revealed to be less than ideal, morally and/or craftwise.
we now have what didn’t exist then, which is popular scholarship on real trans men who were historical “women in disguise” and it turns out there IS a largely distinction we can draw between those who wanted to be identified as men and those for whom dressing as a man was a means to an end. and i didn’t get it at the time and i’m sure tamora pierce didn’t either but like the longing alana feels to wear dresses is so trans coded because her life would be so much easier if she actually were a trans man, if she could just hide that she is a woman forever and just galavant about as a knight as she wishes. in her writing, gender is something innate but also distinct from sex, and that is apparent 25 years before she ever featured a trans character in her worlds. tamora pierce is the author who wrote a story about a cis character where god herself had to come down and tell the mc that she cant hide her gender forever because she will make herself miserable, and it’s simply not who she is. and alanna discovering women warriors is an incredible parallel of the trans experience of discovering your real gender by learning about the trans community.

Also I love how Alanna goes on to play gender like a fiddle. I love the scene in Lioness Rampant where she very calmly explains why she needs to wear pants to the coronation. Not because the dress isn’t stunning or she’s unwilling to wear it. But IT IS POLITICAL THEATER TIME GUYS AND WE ARE SENDING A MESSAGE HERE. Pierce saying decades later that Alanna is genderfluid feels genuine. It’s clearly something she thought about as our understanding of gender deepened and changed. And it tracks with the character. I’m so glad I had these books as a young person.
Love how I will just genuinely call Ferdinand a bitch with zero follow up and people get it. There's no "but" involved. This man needs no defense. He's a bitch. He's a loser. He's giving himself hypertension. He cares too much and somehow also gives zero fucks. He wants nothing to do with his own life. He will let the whole world literally crumble to sand if it means he doesn't have to be the main character for five seconds. He's made having an eating disorder into an art and then mastered it; something no one should ever master literally ever. He drugs small children. He drugs adults, too, but it's more important that he drugged a small child and we watch it happen and he faces Zero consequences. He poisons people for fun and profit. He would and has happily killed several members of his own family. He has mommy issues he doesn't plan to resolve. He has daddy issues he also doesn't plan to resolve. He straight up murders servants who disobey him.
There's nothing I could defend. Literally nothing. He's a million bad habits in a trench coat, with a million bad deeds filling out the boots.

Now, I know a lot of people are Squicked by FerdiMyne. I get it! They're guardian and charge, teacher and student, there's a 14 year physical age gap (she's older than him but only on a literally outlandish technicality), adoptive-uncle and adoptive-niece.
But hear me out for a second.
Ferdinand is a bitch.
He's an asshole. He's a freak. He's kind of a loser. He's basically that self-entitled richass dipshit writing full novels in the back of English class and giving snobbish responses to everything, made absolutely worse by the fact that you know his stupid ass it going to one day write something that makes fuckoff amounts of money because his parents know people in the publishing industry. And the worst part is that it's actually really good because his parents also paid for him to get his PHD in literature and he is, in fact, smart. He's self-centered and doesn't really care about the emotional strain he puts on the people around him as long as his goals are achieved... until Myne essentially Steals His Soul and Commands Him To Live, but that's neither here nor there at the moment.
He's also dedicated to his cause, keeps Myne's secrets, breaks every rule he can to keep her alive (literally just to make his life easier at first, it wasn't a romantic grooming thing, if he wanted her as anything more than a mana battery he would have fixed her with that fake smile every day), and he is the only person who could possibly make and keep her legitimately happy.
Miya Kazuki understands that the best life partner you can have is the a partner who understands what makes you want to live, and makes sure you have it. We see this with a lot of couples. With Bridgette and Damuel, they want to live the lives they chose (or will get assassinated if they try to leave lol). Thus, ultimately, they cannot be a successful match. We see this with Adolphine getting herself out of dodge with Sigiswald because his treatment of her was without consideration.
Now, see, Ferdinand understands that Myne's sole goal in life appears to be reading, yes, but he is very aware that it is also tied to a great many other things.
He understands that her family being away from her makes her despair, so he gives her access to them in any way he can.
He understands that constantly behaving by Yurgenschmidt standards is not only impossible for her, but would make her die inside, so he sets up situations that excuse her behavior. (And sometimes situations that don't, but he caves to her and holds her anyways.)
He understands that books are not just the basis of her love for the books themselves; it's also knowledge and access to it. She craves a large breadth of knowledge that could never be compiled by a single person, and thus he embarks on a journey with her to establish public education.
Literally no man could do it like him.
(For a bit of Kenntrips propaganda, Kenny boy understands that Hannelore has no idea what she wants after Wilfried turns out to be a cunt nothingburger of a boy. So what does he do? He fucking asks her.)
I literally cannot—CANNOT—imagine anyone else understanding her to this degree, either due to situation or personality. So yeah. I think Ferdinand is Myne's ideal partner, and I think Kazuki-sensei knows what she's on about.
my feelings about wilfried are so complicated. he’s just a child. he loves his family and the people close to him. he wants to protect his home. he thinks fondly of his most cherished childhood memories with his beloved kindly grandmother, where he was showered with love and sheltered from responsibility. he couldn’t possibly have understood what veronica was doing at such a young age, couldn’t have understood that he alone was favored while everyone else suffered endlessly under her reign. and yet he’s so INSUFFERABLE he’s naive he’s easily manipulated he’s stubborn and persistent in his misunderstandings, he’s optimistic very much to a fault. he turns on rozemyne so many times, refuses to acknowledge how charlotte is impacted by his actions and upbringing, refuses to acknowledge how EVERYONE was impacted by his upbringing. yes he’s allowed the privilege of cherished childhood memories, as is the right of any child, but he cannot separate those memories from the actual living harm still perpetuated by veronica’s legacy that very much lives through him and his retainers. he could have been so much more, could have avoided so much trouble and scorn and disdain if he had simply been raised by florencia instead of veronica and truly understood what was happening around him, but instead he turned into what he is
