That’s part of it, yeah, but another big part is that in most cases, the shows in question are merely referencing existing contemporary memes, not inventing new ones. The reason I think the comparison is apt is that, like Shakespeare’s plays, those shows were simply among the first commercially successful media to document those particular evolutions in language and culture; they no more originated them than William Shakespeare invented the word “elbow”.
