Completed Fic - Yu-Gi-Oh! The Rewrite Vol 1: Awakening
Story Title: Yu-Gi-Oh! The Rewrite Vol 1: Awakening Fandom: Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters (Anime and Manga) Link: https://archiveofourown.org/works/42005976/chapters/105459891
Summary: Yuugi Mutou is a quiet boy. Heās also the school punching bag. So when he finishes the Millennium Puzzle just before the end of Grade 6, he finds his upcoming life in Junior High to be just a bit more haunted than he bargained for. A canon-rewrite/AU where Yuugi finishes the Puzzle early. Takes place before Season 0/the original manga. Written with and betaād by my friend, unicornholly! Warnings: Light angst, bullying, implied/referenced child abuse, violence, injuries, implied/referenced trauma, panic attacks, possession, amnesia Characters: Yuugi Mutou, Yami Yuugi/Atem, Anzu Mazaki/Tea Gardner, Jonouchi Katsuya/Joey Wheeler, Sugoroku Mutou/Solomon Mutou/Grandpa Pairings: N/A - implied one-sided Yuugi/Anzu on Yuugiās side if you squint When I Started: 2020 How I Lost My Shit: Life happened. We started watching S0 and all of DM together at the start of lockdown and planning this series since we had some spare time. But once mandates started lifting in mid-to-late 2020/early 2021 we both got super busy again and couldnāt sit and plan and write as much as we wanted. How I Finished My Shit: Lots of freaking out, extensions given by our wonderful mod(s) running the Big Bang, and compromise on chapter ideas that were on too grand of a scale to finish on time.
Thank you to my lovely co-author @butterfly-guarded-hime as well for writing this with me despite our busy schedules!
I assumed you'd know I was talking about Insomniac for chapters on AO3 and if not, yes I was talking about insomniac 𤲠š it's a lovely fic
Thank you so much!
I'm so excited for the upcoming chapters!!! :D also just a heads up, did you know if you add the date the chapter was made on AO3, it'll update it for those searching by date updated? That way more people can locate your work when there is a new chapter!
I had no idea at first but now that I do more people can find my writings on the site :> I wish you luck with the rest of the fic, can't wait for more!
Oh I didn't realize this!
I apologize for such a long delay! I wrote a lot of drafts for this chapter, but I didn't like a lot of them. So I've been stuck in rewriting mode. I might just end up posting one of the finished drafts, because this is taking so long though.
Sometimes you overthink your writing and the solution to your writerās block is not to complicate the chapter you are stuck on more. But to go back to the basics and simplify it. Cut out th parts that do not work for you. There you might find your flow again.
Sometimes you get a burst of inspiration but donāt have anything on hand to write out so you cry internally as you feel your ideas fading into the void :ā(
writing is simple. i put my characters into a situation that i, the author, cannot figure out how to get them out of and i close the document
I once knocked myself out of NaNoWriMo doing this.
So I see three solutions to this problem: 1. You close out the document and mull over it for a few days to a week and see if you can figure anything out then. 2. Let your characters lose - though be mindful of deaths. A character death isn't something to treat lightly. If it makes sense here, then remember that it'll effect everyone and your plot for the rest of your writing. 3. Go back a little bit and rewrite. You can't think of how to get them out of this situation and this isn't the correct place to let your characters lose one battle? Go back to whatever writing decision led you to this part and start rewriting.
THIS IS AN IMPORTANT ONE! Donāt ignore this in your writing!
Kinda want Unus and Annus to cameo in Insomniac but Iām not sure how...
Sometimes fic planning is rambling to your friends about a specific character and then from there stumbling onto a plot point or scene.Ā
Like Iām planning a Sansgoriel fic and tbh it is going to be messy bc of Toriel and Asgoreās complicated past with each other and itās going to be doubly messy bc of Sansā issues and just trying to consolidate it all...
BUT I did come up with a starting point for Sans and Asgore that takes inspiration from the Holiday party mentioned on the alarm clock dialogue. Iād love a scene where Asgore is sadly reminiscing on the past on the upstairs balcony, Sans sitting on the railing. Sans was probably there before him to just get out for a minuteĀ ācause constantly acting and joking takes a lot of energy but for once he doesnāt want to nap and wants to try and be part of the moment. So yeah, Asgore finds him there and heās a little tipsy from the spiked eggnog (bc you cannot tell me it wasnāt spiked considering how they describe Toriel) but only enough for him to open up a bit more than usual. And he talks about Rudy and how theyād play Santa and Rudolph together and Sans isnāt drunk but it still...hits him in a way. Asgore reminiscing about a simpler, happy time. It reminds him of him and his brother when they were younger, and a certain figure he canāt quite put a name to, sitting at home for the Holiday and opening presents. Before he knew about the timelines, before the RESETS, before...everything.Ā
And he doesnāt divulge this information, but when Asgore apologizes for his rambling, Sans stops him.Ā ānah, donāt worry about itĀ āgores. i think rememberinā and thinking about that stuff is pretty normal.ā
And then Asgore just...stops. And looks at him. Heās torn between wanting to thank him for the reassurance, but also to ask. Because sure, for an old, sad goat like him who has experienced a lot of love, but also hardships and loss, it is very normal. But for Sans to sound like he does, to sound like he knows exactly how Asgore feels, itās different. Because Sans is a relatively younger monster. An adult, yes, but young enough that his hardships should be far and between, and that he should be in the prime of his monster life. What is a couple hundred years, compared to a long life of half a millennia?
But heās afraid to ask. Because Sans is a fairly private monster, and all of the years heās seen him lounging around the grand hall - where balls long before his time used to be held - the little skeleton has never divulged any information about himself. And when it became too personal, too close to home, heād laugh it off, deflecting with a joke, and Asgore would let it go.Ā
So the moment is fragile. And heās unsure what to do.
Itās then that Papyrus sprints upstairs, looking for help with Toriel whom has gotten completely hammered. (Sans nearly falls off the banister, but catches himself fast enough before he does so.) And the moment is over. But, somehow, despite the conversation being mostly one-sided, Asgore feels a little closer to the skeletal monster. And he wonders what in his life could make him long for the past like he does?
Got a pretty good idea with the current Insomniac chapter now that I forced myself to sit down and rewrite for the (hopefully) final time. Itās going to be pretty different than any of the sneak peaks I uploaded though so you wonāt be seeing those probably.
But thatās actually kinda a good thing ācause the chapter deviated itself from my original image for it anyways. And I never really liked how it deviated so...
At a park, hoping a change of scenery will help me get past this chapter.
You know when you canāt write that one scene and itās stopping you from writing?
I give u full permission to skip that scene. Just skip it. Who cares?
Write the next scene! That ones way more fun any way.

Aaand here we have the problem. Fandom is international and Iām sick and tired of american morals being set as the one rule to follow.Ā
American exceptionalism demands we conform to their standards. Even down to what form of English you use omg thereās tons of different versions of EnglishĀ deal with the fact that some of us write cheque instead of check which means something totally different in British English. Thereās this moralising, judgemental pearl clutching which is uniquely American too and permeates fandom at every level, especially crusading white women with their white guilt and white saviour complex. Like, women in Africa and Asia (huuuge tracts of land with billions of people residing there) are perfectly able to fight their battles on their own, in a way which works for their culture? Why do you have to stick your oar in? Itās so infantising and demeaning.Ā
White American feminism has done so much damage and itās pervasive in fandom. It needs to stop.
I thought Iād add the first half of my tweet in case people donāt want to click through, but I think itās definitely something that helps paint the picture of how Americanised fandom is:
Additionally from that,Ā ā Even down to what form of English you useā - yes!! This!! I was basically expected from a young age in fandom to learn American English and change the way I spoke and if there was something I didnāt understand, I was ridiculed for it. And if I spoke in British English at any point, I was, again, met with ridicule - especially if I used slang thatās common among the working class (which the UK has a huge classism problem).
I could go on forever about the other things Iāve experienced in this way but honestly Iād rather not come across asĀ āwoe is meā or anything. Especially as when this topic is talked about, Americans want to believe itās just aĀ āEuropeans wanting to be specialā thing and not an international problem where non-Western people have spoken up about this exact problem, too.
But yeah, even though these are things that happen in general being on social media in general while being non-American, it pours over into fandom and whatās expected of you in that regard. And while American and European issues tend to share some overlap, there is no one-size-fits-all experience which people just donāt want to acknowledge.
I think understanding that complex issues donāt always have a black and white answer to it is scary for people to accept (especially as oftentimes situations that should have a black and white answer tend to get treated as though itās a grey area when theyāre not), but alas.
(Also I am aware not every American is like this and there are those with genuinely good intentions)

As someone with multiple bilingual friends where English is not the first language, may I present to you a list of actual incidents I have witnessed:
Forgot a word in Spanish, while speaking Spanish to me, but remembered it in English. Became weirdly quiet as they seemed to lose their entire sense of identity.
Used a literal translation of a Russian idiomatic expression while speaking English. He actually does this quite regularly, because he somehow genuinely forgets which idioms belong to which language. It usually takes a minute of everyone staring at him in confused silence before he saysĀ āā¦.Ahā¦.. that must be a Russian one thenā¦.ā
Had to count backwards for something. Could not count backwards in English. Counted backwards in French under her breath until she got to the number she needed, and then translated it into English.
Meant to inform her (French) parents that bread in America is baked with a lot of preservatives. Her brain was still halfway in English Mode so she used the wordĀ āprĆ©servatifes.ā Ended up shocking her parents with the knowledge that apparently, bread in America is full of condoms.
Defined a slang term for meā¦ā¦. with another slang term. In the same language. Which I do not speak.
Was talking to both me and his mother in English when his mother had to revert to Russian to ask him a question about a word. He saidĀ āI donāt knowā and turned to me and askedĀ āIs there an English equivalent forĀ ŠŃŠ¼ŠøŠ·Š¼Š°ŃŠøŃŠµŃŠŗŠøŠ¹?ā and it took him a solid minute to realize there was no way I would be able to answer that. Meanwhile his mom quietly chuckled behind his back.
Said an expression in English but with Spanish grammar, which turnedĀ āHow stressful!ā intoĀ āWhat stressing!ā
Bilingual characters are great but if youāre going to use a linguistic blunder, you have to really understand what they actually blunder over. And itās usually 10x funnier thanĀ āOoops itās hard to switch back.ā
I use Spanish and English daily, none is my native language. When Iām tired or did not have enough sleep I loose track of who to address in which language; Ā I caught myself explaining something in Spanish to my English-speaking friends more than once. When Iām REALLY tired Iāll throw some Polish words in the mix.Ā
There is nothing more painful than bad fake Spanglish by an American writer. Bilingual people donāt just randomly drop words in nonsensical places in their sentences ffs.Ā āIām muy tired! I think Iāll go to my cama and go to sleep!ā Nobody does that.
From my bilingual parents:
- Only being able to do math in their original language.Ā āOk so that would beeeeee ⦠*muttering* ocho por cuatro menos tresā¦ā
- Losing words and getting mad at you about it.Ā āGimme the - the - UGH, ESA COSA AHIā CARAJO. The thing, theĀ oven mitt. Christ.ā
- Making asides to you in Spanish even though youāve told them to not do this as lots of people here speak Spanish.Ā āOye, mira esa, que cara fea.āĀ āMOM FFS WEāRE IN A MEXICAN NEIGHBORHOOD.ā
- Swears in English donāt count.
- Swears in Spanish mean youād better fucking run, kid.
- Introducing you to English-only Americans using your Spanish name so that they mispronounce your name for all eternity because thatās what your mom said your name was.Ā āHi Dee-yanna!āĀ āsigh, Just call me Diana.āĀ āYeah but your mom said your name was Dee-yanna.āĀ
- Your parents give you a name that only makes sense in Spanish.Ā āYour name is Floor?āĀ āNo, my name is Flor.āĀ āFLOOR?āĀ āSigh.ā
Ā - conjugating English words with Russian grammar and vice versa. Sometimes both at once, which is extra fun.Ā ŃŠ°Š¼Š¾Š»ŠµŃ ->Ā ŃŠ°Š¼Š¾Š»ŠµŃŠ°Ń ->Ā ŃŠ°Š¼Š¾Š»ŠµŃаŃŃ
- when vice versa, dropping English articles entirely. The, a, an: all gone. e.g. āI go to store and buy thing, I fix car and go to place.ā This also happens when i am very tiredĀ
- speaking English with heavy accent you donāt actually have - when my family and I are switching over fast, we say the English words in a very heavy Russian accent that mostly doesnāt show up otherwiseĀ
bonus:Ā
- keysmashing in the wrong language when your keyboard is still switched over
- using ))))) instead of :))) or other culture-specific emoji/typing quirks
all of the above
I donāt actually speak Tagalog, but my momās Filipino. One of my favorite things is when she forgets how to preposition, so something isĀ āin the tableā.Ā
SOMEHOW I NEVER REBLOGGED THIS?!?!?!?!? this is one of my absolute favorite posts on all of tumblr also, to add to the pile of fun things bilinguals do: cackling over bilingual puns that nobody else in the room will get and then being completely unable to explain why this is funny
Interesting. Reblogging this for future reference.
my favourite is that feeling when you have the perfect response to something but halfway through saying it you realised itās in a language the other person doesnāt speak so you either just kind of⦠fade out, or try desperately to make it make sense in the other language
trying to explain something that only makes sense on your native language.Ā
Ive take French for about seven years and had one friend who would laugh at my pronunciation. Then he took French and came to me and said āI understand now.ā
Iāve been taking Spanish classes for three years now. I will not even try to pretend that Iām fluent. I still have a long ways to go. However, I accidentally adopted a habit my first Spanish teacher had which was to ask questions like āwhere is the [blank]?ā Or āhow do you sayā¦?ā So, occasionally, Iāll be in the middle of a conversation with a friend or family member who only speaks English, and Iāll just stop and go Āæcómo se dice? And get so many weird looks. Itās very fun.
What happens a lot for me is that Iāll be in spanish class and I dont know the word in spanish and for some reason canāt remember what it is in english so Iāll say it in arabic and confuse everyone.
Also a big bilingual mood is not knowing the english translation of food that only really exists in your native language. Like, what the fuck is طع٠ŁŲ©ā in english????? I could say falafel, but this is something technically different
this reminds me of the eu sunt не femeie incident,,,,,,
i think the funniest thing about this post is that this is the ao3 font. someone screenshotted this from ao3.
One of my best friends speaks two languages I can speak, though neither is my native language. We usually write in English, out of custom, even though her native language is actually Spanish. When weāre in voice/video calls, however, I often have trouble understanding English sometimes, so she switches to Spanish mid-sentence and we continue the convo in Spanish with mixed switching to English when needed. Or I canāt remember a word in one of the languages and switch to the other and simple begin speaking the the other. Or I mix in Portuguese hope sheāll figure it out from closeness to Spanish and context.
Reading entire books and watching entire shows and being unable to identify, sometimes right afterwards, in which language was it on
Panicking in the native language. A classic. Will never understand how some ESL youtubers donāt switch to English when playing horror/anxiety-inducing games. Also counts to frustration. (āAre you okay, Link?ā āNĆO. IāM NOT OKAY. NĆO TĆ BEM NĆO FILHO DA PUTA DO CARALHOā)
Related to the one above and already mentioned: cursing is only valid when in your native language. Sure, you can offend people using English, but if you resorted to āvai pra puta que te pariu seu desgraƧado de uma porra, enfia um rojĆ£o no cu e voaā shit got serious
Related still, cursing heavily under your breath and making something up when caught
Getting an accent out of nowhere. I can speak American English without an outsider accent but sometimes I just. Get tired of rolling the ārā and I canāt do it anymore for some reason. Alternatively, speaking once with someone with an specific regional accent and adopting it for life.
Struggling to make people pronounce your name right when they are unable or unwilling, giving up, adopting a nickname not to be bitter (hi, hello, thatās me)
Puns and wordplay that only work in your language. You want to share them. You cry.
Having trouble with propositions. It seems like a common issue but āon, in, atā etc arenāt that easy to figure out. I mistake them constantly.
Inadvertedly glitching out and switching to another language when talking to someone, sometimes mid-sentence, and having them look at you in awe and confusion like they pressed a button in reality or something before you realize (or they point out) they canāt understand what youāre saying
Having to deal with (mostly US) native English speakers bolstering the strength and difficulty and poetry of their language, oh itās one of the hardest languages to learn in the world because we have so many words from so many roots, when. No, itās actually not. English grammar is incredibly easy compared to most languages. But because you have 5000 noninterchangeable words that mean the same thing, but are used in different contexts (safe/secure, see/watch, etc), an astounding number of verbal expressions instead of one-word verbs (pick up, look out, look after, etc) and absolutely no rule or logic regarding pronunciation and written language (WHY IS āRECIPEā WRITTEN/SPOKEN LIKE FRENCH, YOUāRE NOT FRENCH), you might think so. But English isnāt hard, itās cheating. It has no logic. Itās not fair.
On the other hand, the ridiculous amount of different words you can use makes bullshitting in English a lot easier once you get a bit more savvy. Up to and including academic essays, facebook arguments, and fanfiction.
Watching in horror people adopting English barbarisms in the most despicable way, by using false cognates as actual cognates.
Posting in all languages youāre comfortable in + English, and telling people to use the fcking embedded gtranslate when they complain
(Iām making this all too personal)
Always learning something new. Which is amazing, honestly. (āOh you mean itās spoken like that?! Thatās so cool! Okay: *repeats sentence correctly*ā)
Parroting your friends whenever they use a word or term youāre unfamiliar with until you learn it
Pronouncing words like you read them following NONEXISTENT RULES and getting frustrated
Writing a Blind or Visually Impaired Character
A Multi-Step Guide Written by a Visually Impaired Writer and Blogger
Iām hoping this blog will over time develop its own following, and when it does people will inevitably see my bio and notice what I included: Iām visually impaired.
Yes, a visually impaired writer, and Iāve written with two blind characters before so I have some practice in the field.
So, inevitably, someone is going to ask how to write a blind character.
Or, at least, I hope youāll ask someone whoās actually blind or visually impaired about writing a blind character before you get too involved with your new WIP.
I started writing this guide two hours ago and itās gotten away from me. It make it a more manageable read, Iām going to separate it into X many parts, and each part will be linked.
