this might start a war so you dont need to answer this: the fact is people can't legitimately argue against cassie as a love interest for dean bc everything about jensen's acting screams that he was in deep love with her. and i think specific gay dean truthers just need to admit to themselves that dean was in love with One Girl even if he never was in love with another again, but for some reason some gay dean truthers can't just accept that maybe dean had a slightly different experience as a gay man who was in love with one woman.
its like the "gold star lesbian hc" behavior that some fans take part in by arguing that all past relationships with male characters must've been comphet instead of just like. genuine feelings of love they now feel for someone else.
like. there are people irl who identify as lesbians but only ever identify as men in relationships with women who id as lesbians bc sexuality is NEVER as simple as anyone makes it out to be.
and people trying to undermine dean's attraction to cassie is kind of fucked bc of how well written she is (IMHO) and how clearly gone for her he is.
she literally said "i hate when you get authoritative" and he dropped his tone and went "can you please go get safe" and she smiled and left he was like. actually so gone on her.
I'll answer bc I'm chaotic and sexy. But I also want to preface my response with a disclaimer, bc a) I have a bunch of gay Dean mutuals who I mouth kiss in my heart every five minutes and b) I haven't been back in the fandom that long, so generally when I'm speaking about behavior I've seen, it's shit from around six years ago and I'm not talking about anyone that follows me/is a mutual/or that I've had positive interactions with.
So like, the first thing to get out of the way is that labels are complicated and in some cases useless. My own sexuality is this colorful ball of rainbow rubber bands that make little to no sense unless you're in my head.
That is to say, I don't think that headcanoning Dean as gay, while also acknowledging that he was in love with Cassie and enjoys sex with women are incompatible thoughts. But it is goldstar lesbian behavior to act like Dean's relationships with women were somehow invalid bc you only want him to have ever loved Cas. I will also add that sexuality is a very fluid concept, and what Dean is attracted to in his twenties might not be the same thing that he wants in his forties.
The topic of Dean's sexuality and bisexuality specifically is wild in this fandom. You have bisexual truthers who think he doesn't know where the clitoris is, you have gay truthers who think he hated every single woman he ever looked at, and you have straight truther who think he's an alpha fucking machine. All of these are dumb and not what we see in the show. Dean loves women, his partners are always seen enjoying having sex with him, and he's very sub and meow meow with women in general (putting their pleasure first).
For these reasons, I don't personally headcanon Dean as gay. I think he's attracted to women, I think there have been women in his life who he's been in love with, and, despite having personal beef with the kinsey scale, I'd put Dean pretty smack in the middle on it.
Moving on, I don't like the implication that Dean was comphet with Cassie specifically, because he had no reason to be. She was a relationship that he sought out, during a time where there was little pressure to perform for the men around him or society in general (he was hunting with John at the time and honestly a relationship complicated being a hunter).
There are other reasons why it's just kinda weird that people act like Cassie didn't matter to Dean. For starters, it diminishes her role as an important person in his life. And like, god forbid women do anything on Supernatural. It also makes the entire episode completely pointless. It's back to back with Faith (don't piss me off Kripke), and we're learning Things about Dean Winchester. He has a heart, he would rather die than let anyone ever die for him, he met a woman (presumably on a hunt) and told her within weeks the secret that took him years to let Sammy in on, and that Sam straight up just. Never told Jessica.
Cassie is important to understanding Dean and breaking down the facade that he's presented so far. (Actually, that's what all of Dean's episodes in season one are about; they're about lifting the mask and making the audience realize that he's the heart of the show, but I digress.) If Dean actually didn't love Cassie and she was a comphet relationship for him, then why was she included in the first place? Yeah, she's in one entire episode in the entire series, but she's one of the most important relationships he has because a) she was the first person he ever loved b) he wants to be emotionally vulnerable and honest with the people that he loves and c) he loved her enough to let her go.
Aside from all that, Dean is literally so gone on her the entire episode. It did not read comphet to me in the slightest. He's doing the opposite of performing attraction to her (lying to Sam about still wanting to be with her, while desperately following her around meowing). And he is emotionally! vulnerable! with her!!! He loves her enough to be open about things that he wouldn't otherwise talk about with anyone! He admits that she hurt him and that he wouldn't have walked away if she hadn't have dumped him! He pushes back when she says that they won't see each other again (DON'T PISS ME OFF KRIPKE). He CRIES and hides it by wearing sunglasses like. Oh god, even if you think Dean is 100% gay and is only attracted to men, Cassie was still someone he loved terribly.
Their chemistry was insane and they should have brought her back.
