after losing his grace, cas feels...well, everything. obviously. but also nothing; he’s disconnected from the universe. that constant connection to time and space and the cosmos has been severed and, even safely at home with sam and dean, in some ways he’s never felt more alone. so he seeks that connection in another way; with the earth. it makes sense, he thinks--he’d always loved his father’s creations more than he loved chuck himself. 

he starts taking long walks through the woods behind the bunker and sam “as close to a seasoned witch as we’ve got“ winchester notices and starts pulling books. one day, when cas comes back from the woods, they’re neatly stacked on his desk: a few on druidism, a few on old folk customs, a few on neopaganism today. and sam is also looking for something to believe in, so they go into the woods and they make a little circle and they sit under the full moon and both find new faith in the earth and all the life on it :)
