Scream 7- Garbage
I had the displeasure of seeing Scream 7 the other week. It is probably one of the worst horror movies I have seen in a long time. After viewing this movie (because I refuse to call it a film) I felt like I had been scammed. I had to go back and rewatch the first Scream movie to make sure it wasn't that I dislike the Scream movies.
I am only talking about the movie nothing around the production
SPOILERS AFTER THIS POINT
I will start with the few things I like about the movie. I really like the cold open. I thought the Ghostface robot thing was fun. I really like when Ghostface would fade in from the shadows then fade out. I thought it was stupid fun. I also liked Matthew Lillard in this movie.Â
What a load of garbage. It might just be me but I feel like I hear about AI all the time every single day. I don't really wanna hear it in a movie where I'm trying to escape from reality. It looks like Stu is on a green screen the whole movie which i guess thats the point. I was just so sick of hearing about Deepfakes and by the end of the movie I wanted to cry.
The "Twist" of this movie is that the killers are characters we see for like 2 seconds throughout the movie. I do not think that a good reveal should make the audience go "Who?" not once but twice. The whole thing felt insulting to me. I wished it was the boyfriend (who was a bad copy of Billy from the first movie) or Stu who was still alive the whole time. You know it is bad when I wish Stu was alive the whole time. I would have even accepted that it was Stu's secret twin brother as a better twist.
This SCREAM movie also doesn't say anything about the horror genre. I initially thought it was gonna be about how true crime commodifies tragedy but no. They are more interested in going "Do you remember New York? Isn't it weird that Sidney wasn't there?". Hey we are gonna get Matthew Lillard back because people love him (Matthew Lillard was one of the best parts of the movie) It has nothing to say about horror because this isn't a good Scream movie. I think without the Scream title it would have been a mid horror movie that I would have never seen. As of now it is a bad Scream movie.
I also hated how there were so many shots of laptops and phones. Why would I go to the movies just to watch someone video chat with another person. There were also so many shots of Sidney just standing in the street it was boring. I also feel like this movie will quickly become dated. As it discusses AI and the overuse of technology in the film in a few years we may look back at it as we do on the chunky TV's of the past. Other horror films that use technology don't put a spotlight on it and feel timeless. It's the overuse that makes it feel cringe.
They made Ghostface invincible. I hate this. Part of what makes Ghostface different from Michael, Chucky, Candyman, or other horror villains is that he is clumsy. He is tripping over himself. Ghostface is human. However, in this film they make the baffling decision to make him practically invincible. The worst part is when he gets shot several times only to disappear in two seconds. Later they reveal he has on a bullet proof vest and I call bullshit. You are telling me that they spent +$800 on a bulletproof vest on the off chance that the teens have guns on them. Even though Jessica knows all the family and would know if they carried guns.Â
I just hate that this might be the horror movie that 2026 is remembered for and not something like Iron Lung. That this will be the horror movie people will go see in theaters and decide that they were right to not like horror. I hate that this is now a successful horror movie. I hate how it doesn't respect a beloved franchise.
I could pick more on this movie but I’ll leave it here.
