my interpretation of asagiris answer about chuuya assuming dazai was dead is that at first, chuuya had been told he had defected. he searched actively for him at first, but over time it became more of a passive thing. whenever he would go to a new place, he was always scanning the area for dazai, even if subconsciously. as the years went by with no sight of him, he assumed he was probably dead. it wasn’t an immediate thing the night of. gradually he gave up hope dazai was still out there. he was never certain dazai was dead, but there was no other possibility in his mind. i think he was also assuming dazai died after leaving. he had no idea when he would’ve died, but it would’ve been after he formally left the mafia. essentially it was an assumption that evolved over time because he believed he would’ve found dazai or he would’ve came back to him otherwise.
