Normally, I just reblog this kind of thing with a note like, “not only do I read/write fanfic, I have an over-20 child who does the same.” But.

Who da hell do you think manages the Archive of Our Own? Who created it; who does the coding; who WENT TO CONGRESS three times to argue for our constitutionally-protected right to show Kirk boinking Spock?

Hint: it wasn’t people under 20.

Who do you think makes the content on AO3? Sure, lots of teens… but lots and lots and LOTS of not-teens. The OTW′s been around for almost 10 years - the people who put up the first content sure as hell weren’t 10 and under at the time. (Or is there the assumption that the teenagers of 10 years ago wandered away and are no longer participating in fic fandom?)

The more I think about it, the less I understand this kind of question. Do teenagers actually believe the people who manage fic archives like AO3 and fanfiction.net are not involved in fic fandom? That they do coding and deal with complaints and register the domain and all that, but don’t read any of the fic?

I can assure people that teen do not think that. They are just tired of whole grown up adults making nsfw contents about minors/or involving minor (or any other) characters in problematic (read proship) things. That’s the irk and I agree with them.

There are teenagers who complain about adults writing any fanfic at all. And more who complain about adults writing about minor characters, even g-rated canon-style fanfics.

For those who write fic with problematic themes, fics that involve minor characters getting into situations that would be crimes if they were real human beings, fics that involve minor characters wanting and enjoying sex…

If you don’t like those, you’re free not to read them. At AO3, at least, they’re pretty clearly marked.

Those of us who remember being teenagers who wanted sex, who wanted to enjoy sex, sometimes write stories about sex. Those of us who remember being teenagers who were traumatized on the subject of sex, sometimes write stories about sex.

Not all of those stories involve things we wanted to happen. Not all involve things we want to happen today. The whole point of stories, is that you can play with ideas that aren’t safe for real-world experimentation. And you can do so at any age, about any types of characters.
