Africa owes the world nothing
I recently read the story of the debacle behind who would be responsible for selling domain names ending .Africa and how the two main companies involved in the dispute are trying to out do each other in America courts. I though about the absurdity of the conflict, namely two African based companies fighting over a TLD whose true ownership cannot be disputed and whats more, they are fighting in American courts.
So let me get this straight, An American Court will decide which company gets to serve the .AFRICA TLD to entities that hope to but .AFRICA domains which is clearly for African based establishments and entities. What a Farce!
This got me thinking about what picture the world really has of Africa and the , political, economic and social atrocities it has suffered at the hands of the Developed world.
Right from the days of Slavery, Africa has suffered and continues to suffer a catastrophic drain of resources from human resources to our natural resources. The Low-sulphur content oil we produce is sold (at a huge discount) to the developed world and we the producers now have to buy dirty oil at crazy prices from the same.
In the pharmaceutical industry, low quality drugs are distributed all over the continent. Some of these drugs will not even pass the most basic testing in developed countries yet they are continuously flooding the African Markets
The world stood by and watched atrocities like the Rwandan Genocide happen, because well, there were no foreign interests in the country at the time.
The coalition worked extremely hard to remove Colonel Gadafi of Libya only to leave the Country in total chaos and further compromising the peace of North Africa.
I could go on listing the âevilsâ committed against the African continent but thereâs no need, we know the stories. The question now is: What is Africa as a continent going to do to change the conversation, to change the worldâs perception.
When are all the African states going to wake up and realize that we are not the worldâs Begging Bowl nor the worldâs foreign aid capital.
Africa owes the world nothing and Africa needs nothing from the rest of the world. We just havenât woken up.
So maybe some introspection is needed. Maybe African experts scattered all over the world as economic migrants should start asking the critical question: why was I born African and what value to I bring to the world as an African
Only Africans can change the worldâs view of ourselves
Enhance your leadership style
Collaborate more and manage less: There is nothing that inspires a team more than a leader who is not just interested in getting the job done but also not afraid to roll up theirs sleeves and get involved. Letâs face it both you and your followers, colleagues and team members are about achieving the same thing, Success!
Build a community around your vision: this means investing time in not just continually sharing your vision but helping your stakeholders see where they fit in the master plan. Your follower-ship doesnât grow only because people like you but beyond that they have bought into your vision and see themselves as connect partners. If you build a community then you will find that the organic and fluid nature of an active community continually promotes your vision and even improves it.
Appreciate the process: A good leader also recognises the value in preserving the process that got you âthereâ. this is the only way you can truly replicate your success, the processes are reference points on your roadmap to success. So, once you have achieved your previously set goals, go back and re-evaluate those intricate processes and steps; see where you can make improvements, perfect and reapply.
Listen: Every book or article about leadership will at some point mention communication and listening is a key part of communicationâââListen to your team, your critics, your mentors, authorities in that area and any other stakeholder. Donât just hear what these people are saying but listen closely for the little things and areas you may have missed previously. You are not out to please everyone but you are responsible for curating the best image of your Vision!
Take a break: You have to plan downtime not just for when the project is complete but as a regular part of the process. Regular breaks give you the opportunities to take a step back and appreciate how far you have come, see what next steps look like and frees you from pressures and drags. Pressure and drags are the unavoidable things that happen or the day to day activities that need to happen but donât necessarily add much value to the end goal.
Start Building Africa...
Africa has a problem. There are too many people complaining about the state of things and not enough people rolling up their sleeves to get busy with problem-solving.
As an African living in the diaspora, Iâm never too far from one conversation or the other about the state of affairs in Africa. Whether it is the recent developments of the âmissingâ Nigerian President to the anti-migrant protests in South Africa. But Iâve noticed that often times these conversations end up being focused more on the issue and less about how to solve the issue.
Letâs not fool ourselves, we have real problems in Africa. That goes without saying, but the issues faced by the collective African states are not new to any developing economy, they are not synonymous with Africa. Iâve found that most developed countries have at some point in their history, experienced the same.
There needs to be a shift in the conversation from extensive complaining to progressive and proactive troubleshooting.
Recently, the UN announced that there is a famine in South Sudan with millions of lives at risk of dying from malnutrition but in true African style the response from other African Nations has been weak. So what can we as a people going to do to help our South Sudanese brothers, sisters and children? I can tell you one thing, sitting around and discussing how this happened and blaming the government or current civil war is definitely not going to solve this problem.
We, the African collective, can and must form and empower local community focused groups and organisations independent of local, regional, state or federal government to address particular problems at the grassroots level. We need to move away from complete dependence on government to co-dependence on one another. Local groups need to explore strategic partnerships with the diaspora; partnerships that will enhance cooperation in delivering targeted and pragmatic solutions.
We in the diaspora need to start applying more pressure on both government and non-governmental organisations such as the African Development Bank to do more particularly when it comes to creating the space for more engagement and cooperation at the grassroots level.
I donât have all the solutions but I am tired of hearing people complain. I told a group of friends the other day that a man who complains is a man who lacks imagination, creativity and the propensity for innovation. Instead he âcomes plainâ with no ideas for progress and the rhetoric of a loser.
We must fight in words and progressive actions so that Africa does not become the vagrant continent of the 21st century.
Grow Africa...
A few weeks ago I started a conversation with a number of African friends who like me, live in the diaspora. This conversation revolved around the central question âWhy are so many African Experts living outside the continent, contributing their expertise to the further development of mostly developed States while Africa continues to lag behind?â
Its been quite interesting seeing the reactions and hearing the various responses. At the core of the conversation lies deep frustrations with governance, the lack of proper infrastructure, lack of a focused strategy for holistic development and the failure of the people to form a âcommon unionâ.
Africa is and has always been a victim. A victim of global industrialisation as the worldâs leading economies compete against each other using the vast resources of the continent as economic fuel in the race for global influence.
Africa is also a victim of ârecycled leadershipâ with the same old leaders and their non-progressive thoughts and strategies, rotating power amongst themselves. Never giving the younger, and sometimes more objective generations a chance at the helm. Effectively, Africa is stuck in a loop of poor governance and failed strategies.
So how do we GROW Africa?
One of the issues Iâve discovered is that quite a number of Africans both home-based and in the diaspora, have become professional complainers, blaming the successive governments for everything and anything but not really taking individual ownership.
We can never make progress when we are sitting back and complaining about the problems without even thinking of finding solutions. We will never catch-up with the rest of the world if we donât get innovative, creative and focused on building our communities ourselves. Regardless of what part of Africa you come from, We have to remove ourselves from the place of dependency on our governments and start DOING!
We donât lack imagination nor creativity as a people, what we do lack is Purpose and Focus. Without these two things, we will never become the competitive powerhouse we are meant to beâŠ

Discerning Progress
You are always going to be faced with difficult situations. Projects very rarely go according to plans and even when they do, you may find that you still have to work just a little bit harder than initially anticipated. So the onus is on you to develop the necessary skills and abilities whilst taking the relevant steps to tackle any issues that emerge in your journey.
One of the key abilities you need to develop is discernment. As a leader, it is imperative that you are able to take the âtemperatureâ of your team at all times. You should for instance, be able to tell when there are people within your team that have personality clash issues albeit being very mild in some cases. Once you can identify these issues you are also able to manage the relationships so that the individuals involved donât end up hindering the progress of the team.
You are always going to be able to anticipate those major issues that could possibly develop during the projectâs life-cycle. However, each project brings its own unique blend of minor issues whose effects on the face of it may seem negligible. These minor issues are sometimes rooted in team dynamics and it is fair to say that these so-called minor issues could go far beyond having a minor effect on your project.
As your team members begin to work closely with each other they begin to discover things about themselves, their fellow team members and/or the working environment. While these things may be inconsequential in the beginning, you will find that these things start to shape the team culture and by extension, interaction which invariably starts to influence the progress of the task(s) at hand. You will find that failure of a project is most times connected to the way the members of the project team interacted (or not, as the case may be), So a good leader should always make the effort to monitor the type of interaction between team members and if necessary intervene if there is the possibility of a relationship going âoffâ and hence debunking the progress of your project.
Get to know your team members beyond their abilities. Understanding how they think and how they respond to situations will give you the upper hand and advantage to discern potentially problematic situations before they emerge and destroy your progress.

What do you have...
Make the confession that you are a Christian and you will find that people may look at you differently. A common theme if for them to make the claim that you are âreligiousâ. So what?
When did being religious âwhich is not the case anyway â become a disease. Look at the world today and all the people that are running about killing and destroying lives in the name of one cause or the other. Look at the elected leaders and how they run around making @stupidâ decisions without considering the long term effects of the affect communities, Look at all the confusion in the world today just because people are either myopic and/or just plain selfish. Now tell me again, that Iâm religious for saying Iâm a Christian.
Donât get me wrong, Iâm not a religious fanatic âletâs go burn down some homes to prove my loyalty to my Godâ No way, I am however, proud to be united with a God I can trust that gives me hope in the midst of all this chaos â Right?! You who point fingers at me and declare Iâm religious and might insinuate that I must be off my conkers etc. what do you have? Not much!
I have Jesus as a friend, God as a father and the Holy Spirit as a guide and mentor. Yes, you are right I donât have it all together, my life isnât as I would like it to be BUT, I believe that someday God will help me get there and above all, thatâs what makes me get up in the mornings with a smile on my face.
