“Leo Maudire…” he repeats, his voice gentler somehow, always having treated names with care, “For someone so kind, your surname is rather unfortunate.”

The Maudire name wasn’t one that rung any bells for him, and considering the name very squarely meaning ‘to curse’, he knows he would’ve remembered it had he read about it anywhere…

But that was besides the point. Standing up with newfound strength and warmth, he strikes a pose that would’ve been much cooler had he not had the blanket still draped over him.

“You may call me Vanitas! It is a pleasure, Leo Maudire,” he says curtly before bowing back, watching her with a smile and a hand placed on his chest.

He returns to his less dramatic demeanor fairly quickly, especially at the mention of Hotel Chouchou. While it did operate normally, most of its clientele was comprised of vampires.

Perhaps, Vanitas wonders, if that surname hinted at something deeper than just an unfortunate meaning.

Regardless, he needed to head that way himself, and helping a woman along the way wouldn’t hurt. As long as she wasn’t as directionally challenged and scatterbrained as Noé was, which was quite a feat to accomplish, it’d be fine.

“Of course! I’m heading there myself, you can follow me,” he says with a confident smirk, beginning to walk homeward.

“Ah yes.. My real last name does carry a rather unfortunate meaning doesn’t it?” Leo only learned about it recently herself and was still adjusting to it. It sounded a lot less welcoming than the surname she grew up with. Though that wasn’t important at the moment, not when the man before her was being quite the gentleman. Even though his intended dramatic pose was a bit.. covered by the blanket she had given him. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Vanitas! You can just call me Leo.” It was only fair since she would be addressing him by his first name as well. What luck she had to find someone that knew the way there! Though if Vanitas was also staying at the hotel, was he also a vampire? Such a shame it wasn’t something one could casually ask out of the blue. Leo was learning all the rules to being what she is and it was honestly hard to keep track of sometimes. All the silverette could hope for was to learn as she explores this vast city and stay out of trouble. “Thank you kindly!” She followed after Vanitas, making sure not to stray too far from him. “This city has so many streets that it’s been a bit difficult to remember my way around without a map.. Which now I have to purchase a replacement.” That one had all the notes and routes she had written on too. Now it would have to be redone all over again! “May I ask you something, Vanitas? Um.. Is there a particular reason you are taking up residence in Hotel Chouchou?” Maybe that would be a more.. casual way to ask about him and see if he is like her!

Vanitas hadn’t been expecting anyone to see him, much less worry about him. This part of Paris was fairly quiet, and he’d hoped that his moment of weakness would be limited to just him. Thus, when a question from an unknown voice breaks his silent isolation, he tenses.

However, his tension doesn’t protect him at all from the sudden feeling of the blanket being placed over his cocoon-esque figure. He makes a small noise of surprise, unable to stifle it before it leaves his lips.

He peers up from under the blanket and his jacket, meeting eyes with the woman who had deigned to show him some good will. The instinct to protest bubbles at the back of his throat for a moment, but he quickly puts on his more charismatic demeanor.

“Ah, thank you, but you don’t need to worry, I’m plenty warm on my own. I would hate to take something from a fine lady such as yourself.”

“Think nothing of it! I can go buy another one but I couldn’t leave you here to weather the cold on your own.” Leo gave Vanitas a soft, warm smile as she gave a small bow in proper greeting. “It is a pleasure to meet you though. I am Leo Maudire! If there is anything else you should need, I can do what I can to assist.” That was her current bad habit, stopping to aid whoever seemed to be in need of help. The point of moving to Paris was for her to blend in and not draw attention to herself. So, of course, the vampire was on the right track of doing the complete opposite. 

Leo looked around at their current surroundings and was quick to realize something.. This wasn’t the way to the hotel at all! Once again she made a wrong turn and ended up lost. There really were too many streets in Paris wasn’t there? “Speaking of help.. You wouldn’t know the way to Hotel Chouchou would you? I was on my way there but seem to have gotten turned around somewhere. I did have a map but the wind carried it off.”

His words are muffled, and the raven-haired man is barely visible through the attempt at a cocoon he's made out of his oversized coat.

“Are you quite alright, Monsieur?” Leo made her way over to the would-be cocoon, holding a cloth bundle in her arms. It had gotten quite cold as of late, which was why she had purchased the blanket now in her possession. Well she did hear the man’s complaints and simply couldn’t leave him here to suffer the elements. So the thick blanket was unfolded before being draped over Vanitas. “Here we are! This should warm you right up.”

Beneath Leo’s cheerful demeanor, there lies something beneath it that she’s kept hidden for as long as she could remember. While her human ‘parents’ gave her all the love in the world, there always existed a feeling of wanting to truly belong. A void in her chest that lingers there, reminding her that something was missing. Even after the Shapeless One ( @alchimiamagister​ ) informed her of her true nature, it didn’t fill the void like she hoped. Even with learning she was a vampire, Leo still struggles with that feeling of not truly belonging in whatever society she stands in and that void within herself. The source of this feeling is the fact Leo has no memory of her True Name, unable to recall it just yet. Without this essential part of herself, the feeling will never fade until the memory is recovered or found..

Leo was making her way down the ever busy streets of Paris when the stranger asked for assistance. Wanting to be of help, the woman halted in her stride to hear the other out. Seemed she had gotten lost while heading back to her hotel! That was something the silverette could understand and relate too, seeing as it happened to her before as well. “I will do my best to assist you! What’s the name of the hotel you’re staying at? With any luck, it could be the same I’m lodged at for the time being too.”

The city of Paris was vast and incredibly busy to boot! Truly it was the opposite of the simpler life Leo had grown accustomed to but the Teacher did say this was for the best. Perhaps this is what people meant by hiding a needle in a haystack or something to that effect? A part of her was worried about being lost but it did help calm down her nerves to look at it at an unexpected adventure for the day. Not to say she wasn’t thankful when a stranger took notice!

“Hello there! I do seem to be lost, yes. I’m still getting used to navigating around Paris but it has been fun to get a look around.” The silverette made her way over to him, giving a small polite bow. By the sound of it, he was a local that knew his way around much better than she did. What luck! The soft smile remained on her face as she spoke. “I was looking for a bakery I heard was around here. You see, I am looking for work!”

Dante had been usually spending his time away from Johann and Riche to try to collect his own thoughts but he was taken off guard when he noticed the girl. She had a strange scent to her. Almost as if she was a different vampire - just a vampire that had a scent he was not familiar with.

Letting the woman come near him, Dante just merely kept an eye on her hands to ensure that she would not pull a fast one on him. Too many vampires and humans have attempted to harm him because he was a dhampir.

“Oh! Are ya talkin’ ‘bout the one that makes those lil mouse ones?”

Oh what luck! He even knew which bakery she was looking for! Others had mentioned there were several in this city and so she was about to give up hope. Did Leo know that Dante was a dhampir? Not at all and she likely wasn’t aware of the term yet since it was only recently she learned about her own true nature. Not that she would judge him over something one had no control over. 

“Yes! That is the very same bakery I’m looking for. I heard they were hiring and so I wanted to try for the position myself.” The silverette halted in her thoughts as she realized something important. Something that no doubt made her seem rude to the other! How could it not? “I’m so sorry! Here I am talking away and I forgot to introduce myself. I am Leo Maudire, a pleasure to meet you, Sir.” Was it a good idea to use that last name so freely? Likely not but she didn’t want to lie to a potential friend.
