Liar is a single off Romance released with Shameless. Lyrically, it’s about Camila being unable to deny that one person.

So, Camila and Lauren are out in the night and Camila’s giving herself some prep talk so she can pretend Lauren doesn’t affect her. 

The mention of Lauren being with somebody else alludes to My Oh My (she came with you, then left with me) and More Than That (if my man knows there’s gon be some issues).Disclaimer: that does not mean that Lauren is cheating since these songs do not allude to cheating and they’re in a party context, which means they don’t have to marry whoever they hook up with.

There’s also some resistance coming from Camila. She doesn’t want to give in to Lauren’s charms anymore. Lauren knows it, as revealed in Back to Me (love to watch you try and turn your back to me when I know that any minute you’ll be back to me).

Liar showcases well Camren’s inconsistency in 2014, but it doesn’t capture how it affected Camila. The inconsistency became a problem as Camila’s feelings grew while Lauren just wanted to enjoy the physical side of their relationship.

I’ve got a new client, guys. And this time it’s a B2C company, which means that I’m working with some influencers now. And my brief experience gave me a powerful insight.

My client is quite famous in Latin America. I can’t say what they do for obvious reasons, but they’re a place people go to have some fun. Several famous celebrities have been there and the approach is always the same: their PR agent asks us if they can go and we usually allow it based on engagement/range. No costs.

Why am I talking about it? Remember when Tyroid and Shitmila were watching basketball games right in the eye of the paps? Well, what if I told you they never paid for their tickets?

It’s simple: Camila and Shawn’s PR agent (which happens to be the same) talks to NBA’s press contact in order to let them know that Camila and Shawn want to attend the game. The NBA’s publicist will check with the organization if it’s okay to concede those spots to them. Once it’s allowed, it is done. The seats are up front on purpose so the paps can spot them and take pictures with ease.

There. They don’t need to pay the paps for this. It’s all free press.

Song Analysis: Señorita

Señorita is the lead song and PR song from Romance. It was used to kickstart her PR with Shawn (aka, Shitmila) and also save him from flopping on his third album. Lyrically, it’s about a FWB relationship with a woman.

I love it when you call me, señorita I wish I could pretend I didn’t need ya But every touch is ooh la la la It’s true, la la la Ooh, I should be running Ooh, you keep me coming for you

Let’s start with the hook line: I love it when you call me, Señorita. Did you see that I added a coma before Señorita? Why is that? Well, first, let me explain the actual meaning of señorita:

Let’s focus on the fourth meaning here: as a treatment applied to a single woman. As you can see, there is no way señorita can be used in a romantic or sexual context. This is grammar saying, not Karla. Camila and Shawn only got away with this title because Americans have little understand of Spanish grammar and usage. But anyone speaking a Latin-derived language (Portuguese, French or Italian) could tell you that.

As señorita is a word you use to refer to somebody else and, we classify it as a vocativo (when it’s not the subject of a phrase). When it happens, it is preceeded by a coma:

Meaning, the actual line is I love it when you call me, Señorita. But why does it matter? Because it means that Camila is actually singing that she loves when her Señorita calls her! And there’s no excuse: Camila’s mother language is Spanish, so she knows about all of this. The calling thing is also mentioned in My Oh My (She know I’m a call away, she can drop a pin and I’d come meet her) and, conversely, on This Love (Fuck this love, calling my name).

Another symbol on the chorus of Señorita is inconsistency, which is a major theme on Who Are You, Shameless, Going Nowhere, No Way, and Liar.

Miami is the hometown of both Camila and Lauren, also mentioned in OMG (From Miami causing trouble in LA) and Inside Out (Grew up in South, South Miami, that’s where I was when you found me).

The summer rain also helps setting up a tone. it’s summer, so it’s hot and passionate. But there’s also rain, which evokes sadness. It’s a simple, but clever metaphor to Camren in 2014. The rain is also a symbol on Who Are You (Will you be the sun or the pouring rain?) and on Consequences (Loving you was sunshine, but then it poured and I lost so much more than my senses). As you can see, Camila usually ties the rain with the sun - which will come later into this analysis.

Camila also recalls meeting Lauren for the first time, when she was impressed by her singing and even more by her beauty. Baby C also shares this memory on My Oh My (one look and I couldn’t breathe) and Should’ve Said It (I knew it was you from the very first night).

So basically they’re drinking and dancing on the beach all night long. What’s more romantic than that?

The first symbol here is obviously drinking. There are a lot of Camren references to that, such as: Burning, More Than That, OMG, Sauced Up and Sangria Wine. The other one is dancing, another strong Camren symbol, as seen on songs like South of the Border, All Again, OMG, Sangria Wine, and Back To Me.

Then, there’s the moon. As we’ve asserted before, it is an important symbol for Camila, being a major theme on Only Told The Moon. And the sun is another great symbol, being mentioned on songs like Who Are You (will you be the sun or the pouring raing?), Mi Persona Favorita (eres como el sol, sale sin razón), and Consequences (loving you was sunshine, safe and sound).

You know I love it when you call me, señorita I wish it wasn’t so damn hard to leave you But every touch is ooh la la la It’s true, la la la

Yes, Camila loves when her señorita calls her, but it isn’t all sunshine and rainbows and trees. Why? Because Lauren wouldn’t admit her feelings for Camila but would still hook up with her. That put Camila in a complicated position. In a way, Señorita is like a prequel to This Love, where Camila puts all of her frustration out of her chest.

Locked in the hotel There’s just some things that never change You say we’re just friends But friends don’t know the way you taste, la la la ‘Cause you know it’s been a long time coming Don’t you let me fall

So Camila and Lauren are once again locked in a hotel room and Lauren swears for God that they’re still just friends. Camila questions it because friends don’t know the way each other tastes, of course.

The locked in a hotel scene contradicts the Shitmila narrative. According to the official story, Camila and Shawn were too shy to act on their feelings when younger, but it all came back while working on the song. This is flawed because:

1) How is Señorita about them when they supposedly got together while working on the song? This is not how songwriting works. You need time to process your feelings and find the right words to express them.

2) If this isn’t about Shitmila 2019, then it can’t be about Shitmila 2015, since they were too shy to act on their feelings, amirite?

All in all: this can’t be about Shitmila. But who could possibily stay locked in a hotel room with Camila? Yes, that’s right, Lauren. After all, they toured together for several years.

Then we have the FWB reference, which came from the unreleased song Like Friends Do and is also a theme on My Oh My (I don’t be kissing on little shawty, she don’t be kissing on me either).The taste is also mentioned in Only Told The Moon (lately I wonder how it feels to taste your lips) and used to taunt Lauren on Should’ve Said It (He kissed me so many times that I forgot your taste).

Yup, they’re going at it. La petit mort. The kiss of death, if you get what I’m saying.

Camila doesn’t deny her feelings and she hopes this means more to Lauren than just sex. Well, she can’t deny her Señorita when she calls her.

Conclusion

In Señorita, Camila uses Shawn and clever grammar to be able to sing about the woman she loves. At the time, though, they were having a steamy affair, but Lauren’s reluctance to accept her feelings started to bother Camila.That eventually evolved into This Love.

Song Analysis: Should’ve Said It

Should’ve Said It is the third song off Romance. Lyrically, it’s about how Lauren chased after Camila after Baby C had already moved on with someone new. It’s almost a cliché in music and life.

So you want me now? That’s funny ‘Cause you didn’t give a fuck back then Comin’ back around, so sorry 'Cause there’s no room in my bed And I’m all good now, someone else is gettin’ all of me If you wanted me so desperately, you should’ve said it

There’s not much room for a deep analysis here. Basically, Camila has moved on with someone new just when Lauren finally realized her feelings for her. This moving on theme was introduced in Romance and can also be found on Feel It Twice.

Show up at my door, but I don’t live there anymore Sendin’ me your songs, but they don’t really sound like before I was crazy for you, all caught up and confused Love was broken for me, now it’s broken for you

So, Lauren shows up at Camila’s door, but she’s not there. She keeps sending C her songs, but Camila ignores her. Whether Camila was just playing hard to get or she was actually trying to move on with someone else is for us to wonder.

The first thing about this person showing up at Camila’s door is that Camren used to live 15 minutes away from each other in Miami. But of course they want you to think that Shawn didn’t know that Camila is living in a new house on LA. If they were friends, of course he’d know, cara pálida. 

They also want you to think that the one Camila is serenading is Shawn because he’s a singer and Matthew is not, so it’s Shawn by eliminating… Só que não, cara pálida, since Lauren is a singer as well. And Lauren’s singing is mentioned in Mi Persona Favorita (y tu voz que me desarma), which came before the Shitmila show.

But the door reference is also an interesting link to 5H’s Scared of Happy (You give me one good reason/ Drop everything and leave it/ Seconds away from pulling up outside your door). 

Finally, Camila also shows confusion in Shameless (So many mornings I woke up confused/ In my dreams I do anything I want to you)

Now Lauren’s alone and upset, full on dor de cotovelo mode. Who could’ve known? At least Camila acknowledges Lauren’s loneliness not only in here, but also in Feel It Twice (I know love is the loneliest place when you fall alone).

Camila is basically thinking about the irony here: she’s been after Lauren for such a long time and when she finally gives up, poof, Lauren magically wants her back.

There’s a subtle angel reference in he fell from grace, landed right in your place. Camila and Lauren have called each other angel in songs like Burning, South of the Border, Beautiful, Mi Persona Favorita, and Living Proof. Here, Camila subverts the symbol, using it to describe someone else who took Lauren’s place. Ouch!

Taste is another symbol Camila subverted. Kissing Lauren had a big impact, as shown in Only Told The Moon (lately I wonder how it feels to taste your lips) and Señorita (You say we’re just friends, but friends don’t know the way you taste). Now Camila is saying that other girl kissed her so many times that she forgot Lauren’s taste. Double ouch!

I wish that you could turn back the time And hold me closer instead of your pride I knew it was you from the very first night And it took you two years to make up your mind

Camila wishes that Lauren could go back in time and makes things right. This bridge indicates that Camila still had feelings for L at the time. Maybe she was doing this to punish Lauren, maybe she was actually trying to move and have a healthy relationship.

As mentioned in Shameless, Camila came out and expected Lauren to do the same so they could be open about their relationship. But Lauren didn’t want that. Perhaps she was not comfortable in her sexuality yet. Whatever the reason, Lauren didn’t take the risk and chose to “protect” herself.

Baby C also recalls that she knew it was Lauren from the first time they met, which is consistent with Señorita (sweat dripping of me before I even knew her name) and with stuff Camila said about their first meeting. The it’s you is reminiscent of Never Be The Same. 

Finally, Camila digs a hole on her own narrative by mentioning that Lauren two years ago - also in Feel It Twice. Timewise, it doesn’t fit Shawn because the Shitmila narrative says they liked each other from the start, but didn’t act on their feelings. It doesn’t fit Matthew because they supposedly met on October 2017 and started dating on January 2018. It cannot be Michael since he’s been with his fianceé since 2015 and it cannot be Austin because Camila wouldn’t give him the time of day - as mentioned in an interview about CC1 - and there wasn’t a love triangle at the time and, from his reaction in the main narrative, it looked like she broke up with him, not the other way around.

Sure… but to believe in that is also to ignore how much this fits Camren timeline in 2014. They could’ve been hooking up for about two years since they met in 2012. Plus, all of the references above point to Lauren. Meaning, there’s no way this song is not about Lauren.

Conclusion

Should’ve Said It is a Camren jealousy song of when Camila tried to move on and date someone just as Lauren figured out her own feelings. The only question remaining is: who is the third person?
