I started playing KCD2 a few weeks back on a complete whim and now it’s consuming my life. Please send help.

So I saw something the other day that made me go "huh" about what shipping actually means - somebody was talking about how they don't really ship something but they are compelled by the relationship and are interested in seeing it. And I did a double-take because to me, that would be shipping it! But then they clarified that they weren't sexually interested in the characters and their relationship and that's what they meant.

Reader, I have never considered that as the reason to ship something before.

This also made me go huh, because sometimes I write stuff where I think people assume it's a sexual interest of mine (there's another poll I think about whether sexual context is always appropriate to tag if there's an assumption it's a consensual romantic relationship context but that's for another time...)

So, for science:

What do you mean when you say you ship something?

I am sexually interested in one or both characters and want to see that

I am interested in the story dynamic of the pairing and want to see that

I need to both be sexually interested and be interested in the story dynamic

I'm not interested in shipping at all because I'm not sexually interested

Its good for the soul to be rabidly in lust with someone who is just sort of objectively weird looking I think.
