In S5, there is a scene where Elena says to amnesia Stefan that his instinct was always to protect HER. It was just soo bad coming from her, because girl, it would've come accross less self centred for you to say, his instinct has always been to protect everyone. Because that's exactly what it was and who Stefan has always been. When people need him, Stefan has always come through for them. It's like Katherine said in 5x09, "Deep down Stefan's a hero. He can't always come through for himself but he can always come through for others." It's funny because Katherine is supposed to be the self centered one, she's the one who was supposed to not know Stefan the way Elena does. But it's truly the opposite.

S5 Elena was truly something else. So narcissistic in the way she made Stefan's whole amnesia about herself. She was trying to jog his memories by reminding him of who she was to him rather than reminding him of who he was. But to do that ofc, Elena needs to have the understanding of who Stefan is, at his core. But she thinks Stefan's whole life revolved around her. She thinks he was only a hero for her. That's why she she says dumb stuff like "your instinct was always to protect ME".

It is truly hilarious how, as the show progresses, Elena comes off as the person who knows Stefan the least. Because even Caroline who hadn't dated Stefan at that point understood him way better. She brought amnesia Stefan back from the edge of being the ripper again, by simply saying "this is not who you're Stefan. You might not remember but I do". She's emphasizing that Stefan's not the kind of person who enjoys hurting people. It's a significant difference from Elena, because Caroline's not making it about herself. She makes it about Stefan and who he is. Not who she is to him. She also brings this point home in S6, when she stands in front of Stefan and says "You're the one that always cared. Even in our perfectly messed up lives, you cared more than anyone." Stefan cares. Not just about her. But about everyone. And Caroline understands this about him. She goes as far to say, that's the thing she likes the most about him.

Elena somehow thought Stefan only ever cared about her (Elena stans also have this misconception lol). How she got there, I truly don't know. And it is far from truth. I also have a theory that, this attitude is what she likes about Damon the most. She loves the fact that Damon only cares about her. She has even bragged about how her serial killer of a boyfriend (Damon) would kill just about anyone for her. She revels in the fact that Damon would do things ONLY for her. This is what makes her say in S4, "look I know you guys have issues with him but I'm happy." The *issues* being, Damon abusing Caroline and Damon killing and turning Bonnie's mother. Lol. These *issues* are not important cos "he has always been there for ME whenever I needed him". That's all that matters to Elena Gilbert. Even with Stefan in S1, it was the same for her. She couldn't understand why Bonnie wouldn't want to be around Stefan, even though he was partly responsible for her Gram's death. So Elena said "After my parents died, it's been a while that I felt good, and Stefan's a huge part of that". So Bonnie's feelings dont matter, she wants Bonnie to get along with Stefan cos he makes HER happy. That's all she cares about.

As long as Stefan and Damon are there for her. It doesn't matter who they hurt.

And she makes the mistake in thinking that like Damon, Stefan ONLY did things for HER. Even in S2 she says "he doesn't like dancing, he only ever did it for ME". But we later see this is not true. Stefan enjoys dancing. In fact HE seeks Caroline out multiple times to dance with her. Elena just never bothered to understand him. She always thought it was all about her and only about her.

Never understood nor will I ever understand stans who HATE Steroline. Dislike? I get. Indifference? You got me. But HATE though? I absolutely do not get. Like who hurt you, boo?

Oh I just rewatched that scene in S6 when Stefan is trying to get Caroline's humanity back. She's trying to kill him, and he almost lets her! Doesn't try to push her off or anything intead he's showing her a memory of her mother. I mean Caroline almost killed him! But he is still trying to get her back, if that's the last thing he does! And after she gets her humanity back, she thinks Stefan will hate her. Cos that's how it has been with her always, one wrong move and people write her off. But he not only didn't hate her, he didn't even think there was anything for him to forgive her for.

I just get so emo sometimes cos I truly don't think anyone has loved Caroline like this... I mean she truly has to work for people's love and care. And Stefan just gave it to her always so effortlessly. Even at the beginning, everyone wrote her off, thinking she wasn't going to make it as a vampire. I mean even her mother didn't believe in her. And she had to prove it to everyone that she was worth their effort. But not with Stefan. Now don't tell me about Klaus. He liked the person Caroline had become, after she became strong. He wasn't there when she was at her worst and I don't think he would've helped her the way Stefan did. He wouldn't have bothered. He liked the strong vampire Caroline, heck he doesn't even know the vulnerable human in her. It's just... No one has truly SEEN Caroline the way Stefan has. No one was there for her the way Stefan was. That's why I think no one can love her the way Stefan could. I think he loved all of her, not just her strong vampire self but also her vulnerable human self.
