Things I learned from helping 10 preschoolers do Zoom classes:

1. There should be a locking function on touch screen devices. Preschoolers love touching things on screen they shouldn’t be touching.

2. There should be a automatic transcription option available. My students attend different classes at the same time so they all have to use headphones. It’s difficult to find out what they’re supposed to be doing without having to hear their teachers’ instructions. I believe the Google video conference app has this and Zoom should also have it.

3. Classes must be 30 minutes maximum. Now, it seems that classes are only instructions for parents and students on how to do activities prepared for them.

4. Videos are your friends. Just gotta prepare them ahead of time so there are no ads when you need it.

If you’re dealing with a door-to-door evangelist, pretending you’ve never heard of Jesus isn’t a power move – they already assume you’ve never heard of Jesus. It’s actually an article of faith among many such organisations that the truth of their teachings is intuitively obvious to everybody and the only reason everyone hasn’t already converted is that they literally don’t know who Jesus is. Acting like you’ve never heard of Jesus is making their day.

No, if you’ve got some time to kill, what you do is pretend that you’ve never heard of religion. Like, as a concept. They’re very rarely prepared for that one!

Saw a friend do it and decided to jazz it up.

My friend did my hair for the local matsuri (festival) on Mizuki Shigeru Road.

I bought a kimono jacket at a recycle shop for ¥200 (less than two bucks) and reconstructed it. I cut the front part to make it look more like a cardigan and I left one button on the top (but ended up leaving the whole thing open at the festival). I used the scraps to make an obi.

I watched Kingdom last night and as a Non-Japanese person, it was sooooo cringey. I understand how Japanese people would really enjoy it, but if they did that kind of thing in America, cringey dialogue, over the top acting, and (for lack of a better word) trope-y characters, people would tear it up and think it wasn’t a serious movie. Like I know it was based on a manga, but going in cold was a bizarre experience. Basically it’s a Japanese take on a Chinese story attempting to be 300.

It got me thinking about Japanese humor. I was talking to a teacher about how students graduate together. Students are not held back a grade (I had a student who attended class 15% of the time with low tests scores and still graduated with her class) and there is no such thing as skipping a grade. No, they do things together so they all can have the same experience. I’m not saying it’s wrong, it’s just a different approach.

How does this connect to Japanese humor exactly? Well that idea of everyone gets the same experience. Those exaggerated facial experessions make sure you KNOW who the bad guy is. You just have to believe he’s bad based on his experessions and way of talking. It’s like Disney Channel acting (you know, targeted for children) but for an R18 film. They weren’t doing these faces jokingly either. No sarcasm or satire intended.

I like how in American movies we can discuss different aspects and feelings toward parts of the movies. We could experience the movie in different ways. When I hear people talking about the movie afterwards in Japan, they just say “よかった” (it was good) and people agree and end of discussion.

There is no one way to approach a movie. Both are neither good not bad, just different.

Finally decided on doing a straight perm in Japan. I happened to be in Osaka and made an appointment with B2C. It was a great experience overall and I am in love with the result!!!!
