Victoria, finally confronting Heidi after 500 years:

Bella accidentally calls Esme “mom”

It had been a few decades after Renee passed

But even then Bella barely ever referred to her has anything but Renee

Esme and Bella are in the greenhouse, tending to the wide array of plants they had collected throughout the years

Flowers from Forks, cacti from Arizona, as well as flora from Isle Esme

They talk some, about how their plants are doing, or about the books they’ve read recently, or about the people in the town they’re currently living in

But most of the time they are silent, neither of them feeling a need to fill in the quiet

It happens quickly and unexpectedly

Bella asks Esme for pruning shears, and after she hands them to her it just sort of comes out

“Thanks Mom”

Esme’s so happy she could soar through the roof

But she sees the pain and sorrow in Bella’s eyes for a split second, when she remembers Renee

And she, in turn, remembers her son, from all those years ago

Bella does her best to carry on as if nothing happened, too embarrassed by what happened

While Esme had always been welcoming towards Bella and saw her as part of the family, Bella had never heard Esme refer to her as her child

Later that day, after their garden was tended, they each retreat to their rooms and husbands

Bella talks to Edward about it, unsure whether she crossed a line or not

Esme talks Carlisle’s ear off about it. How happy she is but also how concerned she is about Bella

Edward and Carlisle reassure their partners

“Esme’s happy about it, trust me”

“Really? I seem to remember a certain 108 year old saying that you can’t trust vampires”

“I can read minds, remember? The only thing keeping Esme from calling you her daughter is that she’s concerned you didn’t mean it. That you feel ashamed for turning on Renee.”

The next morning Bella walks up to Esme and gives her a hug and says “Bye Mom” before leaving for school

Every time Bella calls Esme “Mom”, she can’t help but to smile

Jasper will sometimes sit in the garden while they’re working, to bask in their happiness

me, at 14: ugh. i hate twilight because edward is creepy and bella doesn't do anything. why do the vampires need to sparkle?

me, at 24: twilight is complicated because our society loves to mock the things teenage girls love. this brought a new wave of ya books that has been plainly beneficial to the industry. while this is a factor, there's no denying the obvious racism and misogyny coded in meyer's books (i.e. the denial of bella's agency throughout each book, the mystic pregnancy, the obvious appropriation of an indigenous culture and their dehumanization by the narrative, etc.)and the classism tied with it. this makes it hard to fully defend the books even though the nostalgia and aesthetic are nice to have with the twilight renaissance. this is also a reoccurring issue when looking back at other popular franchises like harry potter and firefly.

at first, she stays close to carlisle and esme because they were the first to promise her compassion and security. she’s not sure she trusts the others.

she’s determined to stick to their diet because she’s still terrified that they’ll change their mind at any moment, that she’ll be ripped apart and burnt like the others were. the first time she slips up, she’s afraid to come home for weeks. when she finally does, they of course welcome her back with open arms. jasper understands her difficulties more than anyone, and spends a few days keeping close enough to keep her calm. soon enough, she’s completely dedicated to the vegetarian cause.

for the first few months, she finds rosalie intimidating. rosalie, like usual, is concerned about her family and how having a newborn (soon to be two newborns, if bella follows through with her plan) could put their family at risk of revealing themselves.

soon, however, rosalie begins to feel protective of the young, quiet girl. she begins checking in on her constantly, sitting with her through the nights, and talking about her memories of being a human and the violence she’s faced since. suddenly, it becomes clear that bree isn’t another adopted child for carlisle and esme - she’s rosalie’s daughter through and through. rosalie is ecstatic to finally have her family.

emmett takes his new role seriously - he’s constantly making dad jokes bad enough to cause the rest of the coven to groan. for bree, laughing at him is the first thing that makes her feel like she might be able to feel somewhat human again.

alice loves being an aunt. she’s constantly buying her new clothes. bree loves it, and bella loves no longer being the central focus of alice’s makeovers.

edward and bella stay distant at first, as bella is still human and bree finds it too difficult to resist. after bella changes, however, her and bree bond over their shared adjustment periods.

bree loves renesmee, and always volunteers to be babysitter when edward and bella need their alone time.

once, carlise makes a comment about how 23 is much to young to be a grandpa. in reality, he’s incredibly proud to see his children going off and spreading the same amount of compassion he tried to provide them.
