My First Attempt At A Pinned

Hi, I'm Phire! My interests are a bit of a revolving door at times, and I mostly just reblog whatever I feel like reblogging. I'm fairly low-maintenance but do have some boundaries. Generally speaking, though, common sense should prevail - if you wouldn't treat me like that face-to-face, it probably isn't a good idea online either. Golden rule.

A few specific DNIs that apparently aren't such common sense:

Rape/incest/pedophilia fetishizers - if you write or draw something like you get off to it, I'm gonna assume you really do.

Proship/antiship - yes, both. Y'all making a thorny ethical question into a team sport has resulted in the dialogue deteriorating to basically "don't call me weird for fetishizing the worst things that human beings can possibly do do each other" vs "you're a pedophile because the two consenting adults you ship happen to have a two-year age gap". Fuck that noise, I'd rather be normal about it.

...also, I hate to say this, but I'm very not confident in my ability to vet fundraisers. For the moment, therefore, I'm only comfortable reblogging already-vetted ones. If you've sent any to me directly, I'm sorry.

Once when I was in undergrad, someone described something as “problematic” in class and our professor was like, “That’s cool, but ‘problematic’ doesn’t really mean anything. It means that the thing you’re describing has a problem, and in and of itself that’s not bad. Art, especially, should always have problems, or else it’s not interesting and not art, either. It sounds like you’re trying to say that this is bad, but you don’t want to say ‘bad.’ Is that right?”

So from then on whenever one of us called something problematic, he would make us talk it out until we could name the “bad” thing we were hinting at. In this particular class, 7/10 it was some type of oppression, and the remainder was like, “I’m uncomfortable because this is very new/confusing/pushing boundaries that made me feel safe.”

Once we stopped calling things “problematic” and stopping at that, class got way more interesting and... we all had to say, like, “that’s racist” or “that’s misogynistic” or “ew capitalism gross” out loud, which a lot of us had never done in a classroom before. Or we had to be like, “Uhhh... I’m not sure what’s so bad?” and confront our own beliefs and that was maybe even more useful.

Anyway. Whenever I see the word problematic, I can’t help but think of this professor being like, “Good starting point, now let’s get specific.” I think when we have to commit to saying “that’s ___” it requires a lot more careful thought about the truth and impact and complexities of whatever we’re claiming. Sometimes there really is some bullshit afoot, and also sometimes it’s art, and it should be full of problems, because that’s what art is.

I love the idea that Light and Wily’s rivalry is actually on equal footing. I know a lot of the time it’s portrayed as Wily stealing robots and ideas but it’s so much more interesting to think that he really is just as smart as Light but in different subjects.

Light excels in coding, he’s able to create robots who can think and feel and have their own thoughts and abilities, he lets his children help him around the lab, he’s a collaborative man who values other people’s input on his work whilst also taking a lot of pride in what he makes.

Wily is the opposite, while he is just as good at coding as Light, his real strengths lie in the building of robots, in the theoretical and dangerous weapons he builds for them. The coding of their brains is an afterthought to him, which is likely why most of them are incredibly reckless with the weapons they were given.

The idea that the Second Numbers are based on the Firsts makes so much more sense to me when working with the theory that Wily saw them and was inspired rather than stole their blueprints. I think that makes his and Light’s dynamic far more appealing as well. They used to be so close and honestly I don’t think their friendship ever truly went away, and no matter how much he’d never admit it, I think that Wily is still inspired by Light, and I think the reverse is true as well.

In certain glimpses we get into the future of the classic timeline, it’s implied that Wily eventually just gave up his world domination attempts, and I choose to believe that in those timelines, he gave it up because Light passed away. Wily is such a vindictive and competitive person that I think that the rivalry with Light is the reason he keeps on trying. Maybe the first few attempts were earnest, but eventually it just seems like he wants to compare inventions with his old pal Thomas.

Whose super fighting robot can hold his own the best? Whose robot masters are superior? When Dr. Light points out what amazing work they could do together, I think that Wily believes him, but I think, in a way, he already feels like they’re working together.
