Twelfth Night is an inherently a better play when the grief and love Viola and Sebastian feel for each other is actually felt in the actors performances. All their actions are painted with the grief they feel at the loss of the other and it is hard to read this as well in text only.

Poor Viola doesn’t tell anyone how fresh her loss is. She tells Orsino but in the third person as if she is her own sister. This play takes place over a few months but to think she has been harboring this pain and can’t be direct to anyone about it.

Like Sebastian does come clean to Antonio, about who he is and his past. How his sister drowned and how sad he is about it. I do think his good mood later is attributed to the fact he came clean about how he was feeling.

Sibling Love is at the core of Twelfth Night, and while I enjoy the romance and the comedy, it really is less of a play without the sibling bond of Viola and Sebastian.
