Hi everyone š
Got locked out of my old tumblr - Iām a former dancer (mostly ballet) who loves comp dance. I support all dancers and studios, but love Gracyn French (favorite solo is Kokomo!), Stella Condie, Destanye Diaz, Sabine Nehls, Sam Fine and Sam McWilliams (also a Swiftie, loved seeing him in the Eras Tour!) - just creating an account again so that no one mistakes me for an anonymous creep. Happy dancing š©°
Anyone else reading the q&a Caitlyn McKenzieās mom is doing? That mom seems like a level-headed breath of fresh air based on the answers they gave re: school, dance, pom, even Jo Jax (I think the dance wear craze is ridiculous but she even managed to seem reasonable about that!) - love that for her girls!

Now that the dust is settling on the last big dance nationals event of the seasonā¦ letās talk about how making the Top 10 at events like The Dance Awards or Press Play is not the only measure of a dancerās talent or potential! I see so many kids that are wonderful dancers absolutely crushed they didnāt make the top dancer lists and they are absolutely fantastic dancers. Some of these kids end up quitting dance because they think they are not good enough. The crazy part is, many of the top professional dancers will tell you they were not number one dancers when they were kids (and thatās if they danced competitively at all!!! Many of them never did!).
The results for these big events are based on far more than who did their dance perfectly on stage or who had the best audition. Relationships, familiarity, studio representation, prior exposure, taste in choreography styles and the simple reality that in an audition, our brains naturally gravitate to people weāve seen before can all influence how someone stands out on any given day. That doesnāt mean anyone is intentionally being unfair, itās just human nature.
None of this takes away from the incredible dancers who make the Top 10. They are amazing dancers and absolutely deserve to celebrate their accomplishments. But it also doesnāt diminish the dancers who donāt hear their number called.
A single weekend cannot define years of hard work, artistry, dedication, or potential. Every dancer brings something unique to the stage, and success in this industry has never been determined by one competition or one audition.
As dance supporters, letās celebrate growth, resilience, work ethic, and the courage to keep showing up. Those qualities will carry this generation of dancers much further than any Top 10 list ever could. Rant over š
I do not tell anyone I partake in watching dance like this nor do I ever plan to because everyone in my life would find it so beyond weird- but my mom came across pop muzik on tiktok when it was trending and raved about it for weeks and I just partook in that like it was also new to me LOL

she won mini at jump nationals before TDA was a thing and then won jr, teen & senior. so she is considered the og 4x winner!

I am having some trouble imagining how Tatum could have a better solo than water boy. that solo even if it was from tw was outstanding, I know we dont see the audition but with that solo and improv it was an easy win. dont know what they were looking for tho, I thought she listened more to the music than a bunch of tricks. I hope she'll receive her flowers in the next couple of years. NO HATE TO LUCIA. since everyone twists things up on here!
tw sucks, but water boy was perfect for tatum. definitely her best contemporary solo. shame it wasn't enough for her to win... but lucia was also very good, and corazon is a great solo, so ig the judges simply preferred her
I loved Tatumās solo and I am a staunch jazz/musical theatre fan. Itās rare that I passionately like a contemporary number and hers was breathtaking. I preferred Luciaās improv but only just slightly. I could not have been a judge at TDA this year! What a line up.
My overarching TDA opinion which I have had for years is TDA needs to reward more than just lyrical/contemporary if they want to help promote all styles of dance. Itās so also boring watching lyrical and contemporary all night long.
I watched the most insane tap and musical theatre group numbers during the gala today, and they received little to no recognition. The technique and musicality in both dances were incredible.
I understand itās lot easier to see technique when the dance is ballet based but you are dance judges you should be able to identify good technique in other forms.
I totally agree with this and as a dancer, I will always have an appreciation for contemporary dance but god am I sick of watching it in comps! Sometimes I canāt even make it through a solo. It is ONE style of dance.
Iām in Maine and went to sleep after they announced all the top 3s - just woke up and watched all the recompetes and WOW - I do not envy those judges. Regan and Caitlin - that was the best I have seen either ever dance! Iām shook. Also Keira Redpath was INSANE. Anyone know who did her solo? I canāt wait to see where she goes professionally after college. Reganās dancing reminds me a little of hers. Iām just here š¤© over everyone, what a line up! Magic.

Todayās 2016 Core Performer is Maycee Steele from Kansas City Ballet School. Maycee was the first Senior Female Core Performer and her winning solo was Fallin by Chaz Buzan. She has made quite a name for herself and has danced with many artists (JLo, Dove Cameron, Tate McRae, and Taylor Swift) and currently is dancing with Demi Lovato.
I totally forgot she won Radix! Love Maycee, she is killing it professionally!
