Symphony Space's annual literary rite of spring celebrating life, love, and language in James Joyce's lavish, languid, and lively prose. Led by terrific actors and avid Joyceans including Lisa Flanagan and Malachy McCourt. This year's event features a whirlwind tour through the episodes of Ulysses; a reading from the breathtaking Molly soliloquy by Terry Donnelly; as well as a section dedicated to W.B. Yeats in honor of the 150th anniversary of his birth, led by New Yorker poetry editor Paul Muldoon and featuring Colum McCann and Gabriel Byrne; and a special recreation of a BBC radio play interviewing Joyce's friends and family directed by Neil Hickey. Women’s football was massive in the First World War and after the war finished the football teams that had sprung up from ammunition factories remained very popular. The FA noticed, ‘women’s football? Why is everyone paying to watch women’s football? What’s this I hear about a 53,000 crowd watching women’s football at Goodison Park?’ then letters started to appear in the papers saying it was unfeminine, unladylike and medically unsound for women to play football. It was fine for them to work in ammunition factories and be exposed to all of that danger of explosions, that was fine but it was medically unsound for them to play football? The FA banned women’s football from being played on any FA affiliated pitch, which crushed it. The ban stood for 50 years.

I think what’s also important to know about this game that took place at Goodison all those years ago is, the match was a charity event between two local north-west teams, none of the players received money for playing - it all went to charity and the game itself happened the day after Christmas. All of the people there had left their homes and ventured out the day after Christmas in December (it’s freaking cold up north in December!) to watch a women’s football match!

Maryland Just Rejected Funding for Schools and Approved A New Jail Instead

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan ® drew the ire of education proponents Thursday with a decision to divert $68 million originally earmarked for schools into the state’s public employee pension program––which he described as an unfunded priority in the state…

The decision ended weeks of campaigning by advocates pressuring Hogan to approve the school spending, but it also came a day after state officials approved a $30 million plan for a 60-bed jail for Baltimore youth charged as adults. The plan addresses concerns over housing youths in adult facilities, where they are often secluded and deprived of school or other youth services, which the U.S. Justice Department deemed a breach of the law.

“We teach that education is a great privilege that can lead anywhere, but sometimes I worry that I might be selling them a dream. So I try to teach them what’s possible, but also what’s real. They need to learn that hard work leads to success. But I also tell them that they might need to be a bit more patient than others.
