What have you learned today?
When I'd visit with Grandmother, she would like to ask, "what have you learned today?" She taught me to strive every day to learn something new. That's the recipe for fulfilling day - and a fulfilling life: staying curious. If you knew my Grandmother through until her final days - you saw her beautiful youthful spirit.
Her curiosity lives on in me, I think. I want to know everything. I want to learn everything and become better and smarter every day. In my spare time I love to read about my industry, and about leaders I respect. I enjoy reading about the latest and greatest successes and missteps and try to keep pace with continuous innovation.
If my grandmother asked what I'd learned today, I would tell her three things:
1. I found my female role model: Angela Ahrendts
2. I gained a deep admiration for Khan Academy and the transformative power of this educational format.
3. The future marketer will be: analytically driven, measurement-prediction pro, have a very deep understanding of social media, a storyteller with unwavering authenticity. Cool. Now how do I get there?
At LinkedIn, I'm surrounded by stunningly intelligent people which sets my expectations for myself. I can do it. My left brain might feel like a handycap but that makes it all the more satisfying to train and improve.
With that, I am making it my mission to learn Structured-Query Language. If I'm going to be a kickass data-guru Marketer - I'm going to lead with insights - and I'm going to get my SQL on.
You heard it hear first.
People have favourite songs - but does anyone have their FAVOURITE of ALL favourites? I heard this in seventh grade, middle school, and was stuck ever since. For me, this will always be it.
Sometimes when none of the 4611 songs in my library make the cut, I fiddle with iTunes categories and preview songs that I'd never otherwise discover. I found the Strumbellas this way. When the song got to 1:12, I realized, wow, I am liking this - like quite a bit. And guess what? Thanks to my iTunes settings, iTunes surfaced some good ol' Canadian boys.
High note: Folk - barnyard - popgrass? I detect a bit of Mumford (enjoy) meets Arcade Fire (not my cup of tea) influence. I'm still trying to put my finger down on who they sound EXACTLY like. There's someone. When I come across songs like this, I get a longing for the O.C. & Seth Cohen's playlist. He'd totally be into this.
Dover castle and white cliffs! Wow - an amazing experience. When I said I was going to Dover, people asked, why? Because the natural beauty and war-time history is intense. Also, my great Grandmother's roots are here! :)

HIgh notes:
Feel Again -- Originally a single for Save The Children’s Every Beat Matters campaign, they embed the sounds of heartbeats from children in Malawi and Guatemala into the song - it's epic in every way. I should mention my instant love for this song is rooted in my appreciation for Florence and the Machine's Dog Days Are Over, which looks to be on Ryan Tedder's playlist, too. Something I Need -- that beat! Let's dance. Preacher -- let's set the scene: you're walking through a city of 8 million and you're discovering a new area. You're one person in a big city. Turn on this song, you'll feel like God's gift to the earth. If you listen to this as I do when I'm in a new part of the city, it feels like you're on the hunt for treasure. Counting Stars -- goes without saying. I'm a little sick of it from the radio, but still a beaut. 80s kitsch and rustic rock merge in full force. A little Mumford, a little Gotye? I wish the music video was shot as a bad-ass Western showdown instead of during a congregation worship. But to each their own.
In a nutshell: Ryan Tedder made another uplifting pop gem. Impeccable.
Another beauty. This makes my heart happy!
Romantic. This would be a perfect song to play when it is twilight on a summer night and you’re tipsy from wine and your eyes are starting to feel the weight of the day. When your heart is full, and your fingers are dancing with the hands of a boy you love. That's what this song feels like to me. It feels like those moments unbound by time when you are absolutely content
Glee's Pompeii cover is perfect. The video is even better. This fills my heart with so much joy. I'm going to gleek out a bit:
High notes: Sam walking down the hallway of McKinley. 1:19: Reggae-esque; 1:25: Rock; 1:36: Uplifting pop.
Rachel, Kurt and Blaine freaking out and that final, "Oh my god, oh my gawd!!" (I start getting happy tears - I've been watching Glee since day 1 early pilot, back in high school. I feel so connected with the characters!)
2:46 Rachel walking down LA "nothing's changed at all" and 2:58 Rachel stops and looks up at Finn (I start crying).
In a nutshell: AMAZING SEQUENCE!
