Naming Chapters
I personally think naming chapters beyond the standard ā1ā/ āIā/āOneā is an art we lose after middle school chapter books. And while I do think the minimal numbering fits certain books, I also think detailed chapter names fit others. So how do you name a chapter (and how do you know if it fits your story)?
1. Chapter names can be much longer and break the more strict nature of book titles
Chapter names can be a single word all the way up to a full sentence while still being manageable. They also donāt have to be as catchy or marketable as a book title. This means you have tons more freedom in the name. Which is really fun.Ā
2. How to Name a Chapter
What kind of tone the chapter title evokes is important. It doesnāt have to match the overall tone, but it should mirror the one within the chapter. Just like the book title, youāre telling your readers what to expect. Here are some ways to find a chapter name (P.S. All the examples are made up):
Within the text
Ex. The sentenceĀ āThe morning was awash with simple pleasures.ā can turn into the title āAwash with Simple Pleasuresā
Name of a side character who gets their moment in the chapter
Ex. āAbout Emilyā
A question the reader and/or MC may have about their circumstances
Ex. āWhat Do You Do When the World Ends?ā
A chapterās motifĀ
Ex. If the chapter revolves around a character getting the MC a pearl necklace, the title could be āPearlsā, āA Girlās Best Friendā, etc.
An allusion
This could really be anything. Some of the most common allusions refer to Shakespeare, mythology, old songs, famous poems, and classic literary works. Of course, you could make an allusion to something niche (or otherwise unknown) that relates directly to the story.
Ex. āEt tu, Brute?ā (referring to Shakespeareās Julius Caesar) could a title after the reveal of a betrayal
An utterance
Anything your MC would think or say, given the opportunity to break the 4th wall, bridges the gap between character and reader a little. Itās not something theyāve said to anyone in the story. And it has an air of self-awareness.
Ex. āSo This is Where We Are Nowā, āThis Wasnāt Supposed to Happenā
Foreshadowing
Use this sparingly and carefully, but you can plant clues and things similar in nature in the title
Ex. The chapter ends with the abrupt murder of a character using a coffee pot that was previously inconspicuous. The tile is āCoffee Potā.
3. The āOtherā Kind of Chapter (AKA The Part)
There are two main ways to split up a novel. The chapter and the part. Chapters are usually a given and can work concurrently with the story also being split into parts. If you read The Hunger Games, among many others, youāve seen this in practice.
The parts of a novel are usually in 3s. This can (indirectly or inexplicitly) mark beginning/middle/end or childhood/adulthood/elderhood. Or it can mark more story-specific events, like The Hunger Games and its sequels. You mostly see this in sci-fi/fantasy novels, but they can go anywhere.Ā
The titles of these parts are usually short and correlate with each other (similarly to how book titles in series can correlate).Ā
Ex. āThe Dawnā, āThe Dayā, āThe Duskā
Ex.Ā āSparkā, āFlameā, āWildfireā
Ex. āThe Testā, āThe Proofā, āThe JobāĀ
Ex.Ā ā4ā³,Ā ā16ā³,Ā ā25ā³
Where you place these divisions is up to you. It works best if it feels natural and fits in well with the pacing. You can plot your story around these parts, or add them in later. Either way, whether they work or not is going to be subjective and you might need beta readers/a critique partner to help you out.Ā
4. So, is it right for my story?
Thatās totally up to you and all I can really give you for an answer is my opinion. I think chapter titles are a given for stories with a comedic tone. Thereās an easy sense of irreverence or goofiness that comes with it when used right.
Other stories can be tricky, though. I think unless your story is super serious (like a thriller), you can effectively use chapter titling. With serious stories, it might be a bit more tricky to maintain the stricter tone with title, but itās accomplishable.
And of course, you donāt have to add titling. Sometimes the minimalistic nature ofĀ āOneā/āIā/ā1ā fits a story better than any other title could.
If you feel so inclined to title your chapters, it can add a whole new layer of mechanics to better tell and represent your story that you can experiment with. And if you donāt feel inclined, donāt worry about it! Itās a personal choice, not something youāre missing out on. And isnāt that what your writing is? Your own style based on what you do and donāt add?

How to Write Trauma, Fear, and Anxiety: What is PTSD?
How To Write Masterpost
What is PTSD?
PTSD or Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder is a stress disorder classified by exposure to a traumatic event, then persistent re-experiencing, avoidance of trauma related stimuli, persistent negative thoughts and feelings, and persistent arousal and reactivity.
PTSD is distinct from psychological shock (acute & short term) and from physical shock (loss of blood). Shock and Acute Stress Disorder may present like PTSD, but they must resolve themselves by 1 month. If it lasts longer than 1 month, it is PTSD (so long as it also meets the criteria).
The Criteria According to the DSM 5 are:
Criteria A: Exposure to a traumatic event, or a stressor. This event can be:
death, threatened death,
actual or threatened serious injury
actual or threatened sexual violence
It can be experienced by:
Direct exposure (Personally experiencing it)
Directly witnessing it in person
Learning that a close friend or family member was exposed to accidental or violent trauma
Indirect exposure that is repeated, extreme and work related, such as by first responders or medical personnel.
Criteria B (Minimum 1): The traumatic event is persistently re-experienced in the following way(s):
Recurrent, involuntary, and intrusive thought or memories.
Nightmares related to the trauma.
Dissociative reactions and/or flashbacks; re-experiencing the trauma as if it were happening again
Intense or prolonged distress after exposure to trauma related stimuli/reminders
Intense or prolonged physical reactivity after exposure to trauma related stimuli/reminders
Criteria C (Minimum 1): Avoidance of trauma-linked stimuli after the fact:
Avoidance of trauma-linked memories, thoughts, or feelings
Avoidance of trauma-linked external reminders (people, places, things)
Criteria D (Minimum 2): Negative thoughts, feelings, or moods that began or worsened after the trauma:
Inability to recall important parts of the trauma
Persistent and distorted negative thoughts about oneself and the world
Persistent and Ā distorted blame for oneself and others regarding the trauma
Persistent negative emotions (predominantly trauma-linked)
Persistent and significant loss of interest in activities and hobbies enjoyed before the trauma
Isolation, detachment, alienation, and estrangement from others
Persistent inability to experience positive emotions
Ā Ā Ā (Depression is highly comorbid in PTSD)
Criteria E (Minimum 2): Trauma-linked arousal and reactivity that worsened or began after the trauma:
Irritability, aggression, or anger
Reckless or self-destructive behavior
Hypervigilance
Exaggerated startle response
Difficulty or problems with concentration
Sleep disturbance / Difficulty sleeping
These symptoms must last for at least 1 month and create significant distress or impairment in social, educational, work, etc settings. It must also not be caused by medication, substance use, or other illness.
If symptoms are not expressed until six months after the trauma, it is delayed onset. And it can be with or without dissociative symptoms (depersonalization and realization).
What does PTSD feel like?
What does PTSD feel likeā¦? It feels like a sensation between deja vu and being stuck in a groundhog day loop. Itās being unstuck in time and time traveling, but itās only to one specific point in time (or more depending on the trauma) and it is the worst experiences of your life. It is being cognitively- and it feels like physically- somewhere and somewhen else every time youāre even remotely reminded of the thing.
Itās being constantly on edge, waiting for the next blow, the next crash, the storm, next piece of danger. Itās muscle tension and clenching your muscles so much you donāt remember how to relax them. Itās jumping a foot into the air at the slightest noise and feeling your heart explode at loud ones. Itās sleepless nights because every time you close them you have nightmares, but falling back asleep anyway because you see the same thing just as vividly when your eyes are open and youāre awake. Itās having only one or two nightmares a night be an improvement.
Itās depression and anxiety and irrational anger because everything is too much. Because people say the wrong thing triggering you and you have to run and hide. Itās people being too loud and big and confrontational. Itās not going out to eat because the diner is too noisy and crowded and it sends the hypervigilance into overdrive. Itās throwing out leftovers you loved the night before because tonight theyāre making your stomach churn and you can only remember what the food tasted like five years ago and the chaos that went on around it.
Itās standing in the middle of the room, hearing a conversation from years ago while a busy world goes by around you. Itās mentally leaving your body and not feeling your nails scrape your skin as you try and get some physical sensation to ground yourself. Itās reading a phrase or hearing a word and bursting into tears, itās seeing a person and feeling sick, itās being triggered and feeling the worst youāve ever felt all over again.
It feels like youāve been stuck at the end of the world for years, and instead of your life flashing before your eyes, itās the moment of your death.

since it looks like shadowhunters wonāt be picked up again I just have to say this.
The mortal instruments series deserved SOO much better. These were the first books that I read that brought me the love of reading (also helped my grades lol). Although I didnāt like the tv show I was still happy that the books were getting some recognition. I know that the books are already successful and Cassandra Clare too but I always wished that it would get the same āhypeā as the hunger games or twilight or smth. I love these characters so much like jace herondale deserves the same attention as Peeta or Edward Colen.
