frank's plot in heroes of olympus has such a dark bookend with his family history in son of neptune - his great-grandfather shen lun was thrown out of camp jupiter - and his extended family in blood of olympus - frank is not accepted by the other shapeshifters. both times frank is told pretty much outright that its both because the group doesn't like his godly ancestry - neptune and mars respectively - and because he's chinese. enough time is spent laying groundwork in son of neptune that i have to assume rick had much larger plans for frank's extended family that got scrapped and he only bothered to shoehorn in one page from piper's pov in boo like "yeah i finally found my shapeshifting family and they told me to fuck off. oh well." idk honestly frank's house being a fortress with with an armory inside is cool but its much darker retroactively because his great-grandfather built that house after getting thrown out from camp which was largely understood to be the only way that adult demigods could survive. and he made it on his own! which is a huge accomplishment but like. house with an armory. grandma zhang's - who is presumably his daughter - whole personality. how long did he live? what was the cost of making it on his own?

also i always assumed frank's great-grandfather was a son of neptune in addition to being a distant descendant of poseidon but i'm not actually sure if that's true? son of neptune says child of neptune but later descendant of neptune/poseidon. but also why would he go to new rome if he was only a descendant of poseidon? and also frank's said to have roman gods in his bloodline which implies that its more than one but idk if i'm right. i also assumed that he had more recent neptune descent because he just had so much going on that the fates simply had to nerf him.

also frank and his mom and his grandmother should have all grown up in camp jupiter that is what they lost by shen lun getting exiled. and clearly grandma zhang still had some connections (the pilot she got to take frank to alaska) so shen lun's shunning clearly wasn't totally unanimous. but yeah frank should have by right grown up there and couldn't.

like i never thought about in this much detail but grandma zhang is talking about her father yes? this adds so much to her sending frank away in the first place. frank took her sending him away so personally. meanwhile in her mind she is A. having to send her grandson (her only remaining family) to the place that left her father to die outside the borders B. sending her grandson to APOLOGIZE to the place that left her father to die outside the borders C. has no idea if they will accept frank or not. she has to tell him to admit it outright and apologize and leave him ignorant of what truly happened, just in the hopes that the camp will accept him, because she's dying and if the camp doesn't take frank than he's going to be a demigod who's completely alone in the world. and frank has no idea about any of this because despite everything, his mother and grandmother were fairly successful in sheltering him. i'm wondering if emily hadn't died/grandma zhang hadn't been sick if they ever would have sent frank to camp at all.

how in hell did frank's like whole disappearence not become a huge case? like we all talk about percy true crime stuff but no its him like a military captain goes missing in action/passes away (i can't remember which right now) a couple weeks later her 15/16 year old son just drops off the face of the earth then a month later her mother dies in a mysterious house fire and her son is spotted all over the world with the kid who blew up the arch, a runaway, a celebrity's problem daughter, a formerly missing girl, and two people they can't identify like and on top of all of that his dad just not know + the zhangs are wealthy

i mean frank definitely had a life before all the demigod stuff didn't he? he just thought he was normal, he probably had friends? he was in highschool? he could have had a lot of friends or been super popular?(probably wasn't love frank but that's just not how he seems to be written) literally all we know about him is that he won a spelling bee and knows some french that's it? nothing about his friends? live before camp? like if one of your friends just...disappeared and his whole family that you knew of died i feel like that'd be kinda weird?

sometimes i wonder what exactly the zhang family business is... the only information about it (as far as i know) is that it's an "import/export business" but it's never specified what exactly they are importing and exporting. food? clothing? firearms? the idea of frank's family being this giant shady criminal company while he himself has no idea about it is kind of hilarious.

- The family wealth was made by Grandma Zhang, not Emily’s father

- “Shipping Business” my ass, she was in the illegal arms trade

- How else do you think she met Mars? Bc these two were friends before Emily was even born

- When she finds out he got her daughter pregnant shit gets messyyy

- The whole family is super tall

- And hot

- Their have more godly blood than any other mortals so it’s going to show
