No IDs, but these tags got me in a huff:
So ok look. The point is not the flared leg by itself. These cannot be yoga pants. These are, and you have to understand this if you are too young to have worn them, BLUE JEANS. And this was the last years before all jeans were 70% spandex.
They were denim, and they weren't bell bottoms. They hung loose from the knee in a way that would make a wizard envious. We all walked around like we were wearing hakama. And they dragged on the ground. That was important. Ragged cuffs. If your jeans weren't so long that they had ratty cuffs, they were embarrassingly short.
And the thing about denim is that it's a twill weave and it's cotton. So not only does it hold a lot of water, it wicks. Walking around in these suckers on a wet day could get you wet to the knees even if you never stepped in a puddle.
Then you'd go inside and take off your shoes and try to avoid letting your freezing, wet, filthy pant legs touch your skin.
Yoga pants. Hmf.
people in cold climates would have a tide line of white marks around their knees (if they were normal height) in the winter.
From wicking up road salt.
The visceral memory of that time is something that never leaves you. Everyone's jeans were many inches higher in the back than the front because you kept stepping on the hem and ripping it off. Your lower legs were so very cold. Every new pair of jeans literally enveloped your entire foot, they were so so long re: leg-to-waist ratio. Walking on a rainy day was a legitimate workout. You have no idea.

The real horror of a Stepford Wives situation isn't 'the suburbs are creepy' or even 'conformity is creepy' or 'I don't wanna be replaced by a robot'
The horror is the idea that you might choose to spend your life with somebody only to realize they don't actually want a partner and friend, somebody with ambitions and thoughts and joy. They want somebody productive, compliant, and sexually available, and all your internal life is nothing but a barrier to that. That the person you love only loves what you do for them, and the less of the an actual person you are, the happier they are.
The first day in Teacher Graceās class is widely acknowledged amongst the Eridian children as one of the most exciting days of school, partly because what could be cooler than being taught by the alien schoolteacher who helped save your entire planet, but especially because the first day is the day when Teacher Grace helps everyone choose their human names.
The students all take turns telling him about themselves, what they like, what they want to do, who they are, and Grace in turn tells them about the names they make him think of, and the stories (fictional and real) that go with them, and the kids get to pick the ones they like.
Itās a beautiful exchange of cultures and personal experiences, and every class is unique (one class ends up entirely named after niche Star Trek characters after requests from multiple students result in āEarth culture storytimeā devolving into Grace infodumping about his favorite show and everyone becomes obsessed).Ā
Grace is known for being a good deal more forgetful than the average Eridian (āleaky space brain for leaky space blobā Rocky once jokingly put it) but he has never once forgotten a studentās name.
It's always "hail Mary, full of Grace" and never "Eva, the first woman, whose sins cast humanity away from Eden (but humanity found it's place out there)".
Anyway, Eva Stratt, you did everything correctly, you made the wrong choice, humanity is alive because of your determination, the most woman ever. They coul never make me pin your morals down as 'good' or 'bad'.
Grace, explaining how humans evolved: yeah so basically we evolved to be persistance predators where we would just slowly walk towards our prey and track it until it got so tired it couldn't fight back or run away and then we killed it :)
Rocky, who is an Eridian, an AMBUSH predator, who can't see light and so cannot track things the way humans can, and that doesn't have a lot of stamina and literally won't be able to wake up once they fall asleep: grace what the fuck statement--
Rocky, waking up in the middle of his sleep: Adrian, would you still love me if I was a human?
Adrian: Yes, of course, my love.
Rocky: Even if I was a leaky space blob all the time? Isnāt that disgusting?
Adrian: Grace is literally on our bed. You have every limb wrapped around him as we speak. Go tf back to sleep.

like every book there's a scene where murderbot has to explain something horrific that secunits are put through to its humans and it moves on (because it is functioning 90% due to denial and repression) while everyone else is horrified and each time it feels exactly like this:
"the governor module will freeze you in place at your client's command and force you to do nothing as they're kidnapped then will kill you terribly and painfully when they're taken out of acceptable range"
Murderbot just knows it as āthe way it isā. As it starts to break free the story follows its own journey to self-awareness and the beginnings of an understanding of the value of life. The story skims lightly over a deep sea of horror and abuse, because thatās the only way to survive until you can start to heal. Preservation is the mirror being held up to āthe way it isā. Humans donāt have to be like the way they are in the Corporation Rim. Murderbot has the genetics of its own oppressors built into itself, which it hates and wants to deny in the beginning. But it realizes that the ones oppressing it were the product of their own system, and they themselves were victims as well. Sanctuary Moon was its first look into what it means to be human. Or part human. What humans dreamed of being as well. Maybe Preservation was a window that allowed Murderbot to escape. But it had to first understand how to make a human connection.
I read a very formative article a number of years ago which said that every book a child reads, no matter what their life circumstance, improved their life outcome. The act of reading helped the childās brain to grow, gave them more ability to imagine something better for themselves, and increased their awareness and compassion for others. This, in turn, made the entire trajectory of their life better.
I think it was the same for Murderbot.
I wrote this all out in the tags but it turned into enough of an essay that, fuck it, it's going in the post.
I just reread Fugitive Telemetry and I think it's so interesting to see all the little moments like this with Indah and Aylen.
They both start out deeply afraid and suspicious of MB, in a way that MB doesn't want to acknowledge but is definitely very painful. But through the course of their interactions, they have enough Wendy's Lady moments that they start to change.
And I don't think Murderbot picks up on this much, if at all. I think it would be surprised to know how much both of their opinions of Murderbot have changed through the course of the events of FT. But MB just keeps dropping these little hints, little stories and anecdotes, little things about the CR that it just Knows. And they're both standing there like "what the fuck... Holy shit... That's so fucked ...." And they both soften up so much to MB. (Helped significantly by the extreme competency MB displays the whole time, but also just through its sheer... Well humanity isn't the right word. Undeniable personhood. They start to see past the scary Secunit and start to see the scared and hurt person that Mensah first saw wrapped up in a blanket in the cubicle.
The moment that drove this home most to me is the way Indah quietly supports it after What Happened with The People in That One Scene. When you know MB is devastated but not actually able to articulate why even to itself in any meaningful way. And Indah is just there, supporting it quietly and carefully and giving it space, but also affirming "you have just been violently dehumanized, and I'm sorry. For what it's worth, I do see you as a person and it sucks that this happened and I'll press charges against them if you want." (I think MB doesn't really process that concept. Imagine a SecUnit making a complaint about a human and it being taken seriously? It's definitely not ready for that yet.)
But the way that in the last chunk of FT she's just quietly affirming MBs personhood. She's seen the cruelty it's lived with all its life and now she can see the person who never deserved it. It's earned Indah and Aylen's trust, and probably most of the station security team, just by being itself, through its undeniable personhood.

Imagine Grace defined his name as the elegance definition of grace and Rocky spends years thinking how fucking ironic this clumsy leaky space blobs name is.
Until Grace slips out a sentence along the lines of "could you give me a little grace here" and Rocky immediately points out he used a word wrong so Grace has to explain that yeah, grace means elegance but it can also mean mercy sometimes too.
And Rocky has to suddenly reconcile that the clumsy leaky blob that saved his life twice, that almost certainly doomed himself to come back for him, name is Mercy.
