When you see a field of grazing cattle, languidly chewing grass, it might be hard to imagine that they are emitting gree
My latest for PolitiFact!
A meat seller claimed that "there are no greenhouse gases in this picture," with a picture of cattle on a field.
I figure most people know that greenhouse gases are everywhere, and invisible, and therefore in all pictures. He also went on to say that livestock like the pictured ones don't produce greenhouse gases because they are "at harmony with nature."
Putting aside whether an invasive species is "at harmony," every living organism produces methane, and cattle are particularly bad because of their rumination process, size, and population.
Certainly, you can make arguments about the sustainability, or potential sustainability, of different food products in a variety of circumstances, but, I was happy to see such an all-encompassing claim that was so easy to debunk.
