one of the things that makes me so insane about grace is his near constant need to undermine himself when he's experiencing the tug of deep emotional connection

he can barely admit he cares about rocky in the privacy of his own mind. and when he does he calls himself pathetic and sad. most avoidant guy of all time.

Let's also not forget that Rocky also disagrees with his internal assessment that Rocky is so much smarter than him! [This is right after Grace says Rocky is smarter than him.]

“Math is not thinking. Math is procedure. Memory is not thinking. Memory is storage. Thinking is thinking. Problem, solution. You and me think same speed. Why, question?” His own internal monologue is so negative, while so praising to Rocky- and meanwhile this little engineer that can is just in AWE at times of the things Grace thinks of. I'm reminded that missing social cues isn't just about not knowing when its your turn to talk or what's an appropriate level of stuff to disclose. It also includes noticing when people are being nice to you! I think Grace snaps up all the times Rocky tells him off, but misses just how hard he wants to be with him. I think that's also why book!Stratt's betrayal is so hard on him. He misses the affection by a mile, but the searing words just stick in him.

So I’ve read posts and fics about Grace discovering his aroaceness and exploring what that means to him and I would like to point out that his canonical friendship with Marissa is a GOLDMINE for exploring aroace Grace as a concept. Like, consider:

Grace comparing his feelings about his ex-girlfriend Linda to his comparatively much more comfortable and fun platonic relationship with Marissa 

Grace feeling anxious about whether Marissa might have feelings for him (man is terrified he has been taken OUT of the friendzone)

Grace being relieved when Marissa honestly tells him she has no romantic or sexual interest in him but likes being around him anyway

Grace having a hard time articulating to other people why he and Marissa aren’t attracted to each other

Grace being part of the reason Marissa and his roommate broke up because his friendship made her have higher standards for men overall 

Grace attempting to date post-Linda and every woman he meets being intimidated by his friendship with Marissa, which he finds hard to understand.

Grace realizing Marissa is also dealing with people she dates not liking how much time she spends with him.

Marissa choosing Grace’s friendship over her boyfriends every time 

Grace and Marissa getting older and coworkers being confused why they aren’t married 

I like headcanoning Marissa as a scientist working to develop solar powered tech for the DOE and so Grace sometimes invites her to talk to his class about renewable energy. Imagine students asking if there’s something between them.

People dismissing Marissa’s significance in Grace’s life because he calls her his “friend,” and not anything else. Asking him to cancel on his Thursday dinner date with her, or implying that he must find her unattractive, or even implying that she has a crush on him and he’s leading her on (or vice versa) 

Grace and Marissa needing to fake being in a relationship for some sort of accidental situation they find themselves in and both being like “ok that was really weird” afterwards

Someone suggesting Marissa is like a sister figure to Grace and he doesn’t think that’s accurate either

Marissa is probably the only existing human character who Grace was close enough to plausibly share some degree of actual physical affection with. He’s not hugging Stratt, that’s for sure. 

No seriously I need more fics where they hug. 

Anyway consider becoming obsessed with Marissa and thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.

I think Marissa (and to a lesser extent Dimitri) and Carl are two sides of the same coin. How we view them as characters is more about how secure Grace is. Book!Grace is a very confident socializer. He's constantly talking to people, even in highly stressful situations and tends to connect with rapid speed. This is read as him naturally wanting being a relationship with Stratt, an explicitly rejected concept that seems to confuse the astronauts. Marissa exists to knock back the idea of "Grace can't get laid/ make it work with women". He very much can have a deep relationship with a woman, one the waitstaff think is romantic FWI. That's just the type of relationship he wants! (And I'd argue repeats with Stratt, based on how chill she is being in her nightclothes around him post-explosion AND that he knew how she stored her notes in them.) Movie!Grace is a good socializer once he breaks out of his self-esteem issues, but he's also manipulated by them. Stratt, the most effective person ever alive, puts Carl in his orbit early on. She demands people clap for Grace. I would argue m-Grace has the same aroace trait as b-Grace, he just got pushed down harder by an -ist society. This is also why b-Stratt doesn't pull out the "you don't even have a dog", while m-Stratt can. B-Grace isn't alone and he knows it. The world's most effective person ever knows that's not a barb that will land. Honestly, while we can't get b-Stratt's perspective due to the first person perspective of the book (minus that messed up court scene) I 100% believe she's going to be the least surprised person in the room for the blogs. Of course if anyone would meet AND befriend an alien, it's Dr. will-talk-to-a-rock Grace. He finds connection like a cat finds it footing in free fall. AroAce Grace isn't just a reading, I would argue his common expression of it is one of the main reasons he becomes the #3 science officer option and perhaps even the #2 Stratt option. b-Stratt canonically considers sexuality of the team and how it will affect interpersonal relationships. Marissa is the lynch pin in the thesis that Grace was, romantically, exactly where he wanted to be prior to the events of PHM.

And just for @petrel-va-line: Marissa having a fucking meltdown when Grace is sent to space, but not allowed to mourn because he was "just" a friend. I think about that a lot too.

Also I gave Grace a back brace cos I figured he'd need it while getting used to Erid's gravity. Also dude's been living on nothing but taumoeba for however long which I can't imagine is nutritionally complete.
