The Book Art Program Helped Launch My Career
I had left my job as a special education/elementary school teacher just before continuing my studies at Mills. I didn't know what career path I would take. Then in 1976 or '77, a savvy and energetic librarian unearthed the Mills letterpress that was stored in the basement of the library. Betsy Davids and Kathy Walkup were the first instructors. Once I took letterpress printing, I was hooked. I continued to find jobs in printing and publishing, started my own publishing company, and later worked in communications at a major Bay Area corporation. My job was a dream job: It combined my editorial skills with my knowledge of printing and publishing. Also, through my own publishing company, I received a National Endowment for the Arts grant and published a book of 21 African-American plays. The book is in libraries and has been used as a college textbook. I don't know what my career would have been had I not found my love of printing and publishing through the letterpress class at Mills.
