"oh, incredibly. and ... not, at the same time. it's sort of hard to explain." the first time it didn't feel as invasive, maybe because she'd created an entire human man at the same time. the second time, when it had been like a download of everything the doctor had done - that had been horrifying, and she'd properly shoved it aside to get the job of saving london done. no need to harp on something when you're expecting to die in fifty five seconds. she's got her palm cupped over her nose, but blood leaks out between her fingers regardless. whatever answer she's given - and it is most certainly an insult - comes out garbled.

"stob 'reaking bout," she says, then groans, because she can hear it sounds stupid. jesus, her head hurts. "'n dob tell jack."

"wanna hear a weird and awful fact?" said with the tone of someone about to talk anyway, even if they don't want to hear it. and talk she does. "absolutely no one. no one told me. i mean, i did ask them, after awhile, after the whole thing was resolved. sat him down and made him talk about everything he was comfortable talking about. but i knew before, for a little while. had all of time and space in my head for a little bit. imagine the worst migraine of your life, then triple it."

i know i've said this to a few people now, but donna has nightmares for months after all of the adventures of the specials. it's not just to do with the events that happened in the specials though.

if you consider she just got her memory back, i think that her mind would start processing the adventures she had years ago all over again and all at once.

the not-things

dying on that spaceship

seeing 14 get taken down by that laser. the sound he made when he got hit.

nightmares of him just dying because the regeneration didn't go the way it should have.

this one particular nightmare where she dreams she wakes up and goes into her living room and he's in there and so is her family and she doesn't know any of them

the life she had in the computer world from the library

any of her adventures, but her daughter is there and trapped and in danger

shaun leaving because she remembered all of her life

the entire thing with the sontarans

"oi, i'm older. shouldn't that be my line?" seems like it should be. a little bit of brashness covers the fact that she's scared. she doesn't want to be. it sits like a weight in her chest, a falling rock. "you don't have to worry about me. you've seen me out before, i'm good." she's rattled, but she's good. last time they were on a trip together, they were separated. donna plans to make damn sure that doesn't happen again. "so you're safe with me. and don't get stuck behind falling stone this time."

it's a bit frightening, if he's being honest, the way she can read him like that, can know what he's thinking without needing a word. he's so used to being the doctor, mysterious and detached and above it all, even if that's not how he likes to word it, on some level it's the truth. he's always seen living a day to day life as something menial and torturous. seen being known, truly known, as something that he lost with his people, and he convinced himself it was better off that way.

oh, he built relationships, friendships, loves, lovers, enemies, but had anyone ever really SEEN him the way donna does ? the way she somehow always has, since that very first day she materialized in his tardis. he's never quite understood how she does it; it's just part of what makes her so absolutely brilliant.

guilt flashes across his features at the mention of her missing memories, and he has to bite back an apology (and endless string of apologies threatening to flood out of him; once it starts it may never stop), knowing it's not what she's after. instead, he forces himself to listen instead of acting, something he's never been particularly good at. something he'll need to learn, he reckons.

“ cocoa sounds. . . ” he trails off, searching for the right words, “ -- nice. ” domestic. like home.

he hasn't said anything. doesn't need to. she gives his cheek a pat with the palm of her hand. it's not that it's forgiven. she understands why he did it. she does, of course she does.

she has no idea if she would have done the same. if she were him, she would have. she knows it because she's had his mind before.

she's not angry with him. not yet, not now. life is too short, and she's seen inside his mind. there's enough of that for the both of them.

"cocoa, then. and we'll get you one of shaun's jumpers, because you look like you're wearing half an outfit. unless -" her head tilts. 'want to pick through outfits on the tardis?"
