Dani’s Infinite Reading List!!

So anyone who’s friends with me on the Izuocha Discord knows that over the past year, I’ve had quite a bit of trouble keeping up with fics. It was a rough year and anxiety/hypersomnia really took a hit on my ability to keep up, even with staying home a lot. Luckily I’ve been on the mend quite a bit, and I’ve been able to read fics here and there from the community. However, my friends’ fics are still unread. Why? Because I like to leave long comments and my attention span has decreased to microscopic levels 😂😂

So, I have them all written down on a to-do list... but I need a place to keep the links! My list looks ugly with them!!!! Yes. I’m exhausting. It’s no wonder why I’m exhausted. It’s fine.

But anyway, I figured— I now know how to create links on Tumblr. Why not?? Make a public reading list?? So that everyone can join in the fun???

Hi, I was wondering if you had any writing advice? Mainly about keeping characters in character as well as just general writing tips you use/for how you write. I really love your fanfictions, especially Superhuman, and really aspire to write as good as you do one day.

Oh wow! I haven’t been on Tumblr for a hot minute haha, but I saw this notification and had to answer. This is so incredibly sweet of you to say. I have a few things to keep in mind!

The main way I achieve what we call Deep Point of View (Deep POV for short!) is understanding a character’s voice. The way to do that is to really understand your own. Do you write with humor? With clinical precision? With a hint of dread? Finding your own voice is probably at once the hardest and easiest thing for a writer to accomplish, but when you know you know, if that makes sense.

Once you understand your own voice, then you’re able to extend to to the type of character you’re writing for accordingly. For example, my voice has a mix of matter-of-fact humor, empathy, and just a dash of dread. Writing for a character like Izuku, the way I understand him is that he has a healthy amount anxiety but also an incredible bravery, while being empathetic himself. He also has a sardonic kind of humor. This means that his character voice is really close to my own natural voice, so I don’t have to get into a different mindset to write for him. For someone like Ochako, for as similar as she is to Izuku, I have to shift into a different mindset to write for her— rather than draw from a place of anxiety/shyness, I try to imagine being outgoing and encouraging. Todoroki for example would be much more straightforward and cynical. I’m writing one for Mina, and I’m drawing on that Gen Z hyperbolic humor.

The above methodology of putting myself in the characters’ shoes— and considering their prior experiences (Ochako being raised poor, Izuku not having many friends, Katsuki being a total ass, etc) is the main way achieve character writing. But here are some other tips to really drive it home!

1. Consider their vocabulary— I write according to the dub, so I’ll rewatch dubbed scenes similar in tone to what I’m writing. Hearing Izuku talk and the particular way he words things makes dialogue manifest naturally, and so on for other characters.

2. Imagining my stories as like an anime episode or manga chapter definitely helps me conjure up those background setting details that really bring a reader into a scene— think five senses. If your character is standing in the school for example, what do they see, hear, or smell?

3. When I get bored with a scene, my very first question is how I can bring one of the ship members into it to make it more of a ship tease. That’s what’s fun to me.

4. Speaking of ships, this isn’t just limited to izuocha, but when it comes to them I don’t focus necessarily on romance. My rule is that if you need them to kiss in my stories to tell they love each other, then I’m not doing it right! Oftentimes romances in fiction lack friendship to the point where you wonder if the ship even likes each other as people outside of sexual tension, and I very much don’t subscribe to that haha. I write them as best friends first, and the crush part sort of comes naturally after. I really like the innocence and purity and earnestness of it all, and that’s what makes ship writing powerful for me.

Um, no. They're not "defending" her by pointing out the original statement is inaccurate—that's just correcting misinformation. I mean, I am extremely vocal on this blog about my anti-monarchy views, especially in regard to my distaste for British imperialism as somebody of South Asian descent. But the OP is misleading at best, and just flat out wrong at worst, and I honestly find it kind of offensive that people would disregard the actual, real-life violent history of British imperialism in favour of some half-cocked statement that lets so many responsible parties off the hook for their crimes.

Like, firstly, if you're really dead set on solely laying the blame for expansion of the British Empire on one single member of the royal family, then that person, without a doubt, should be Queen Victoria. To quote this article, she was the "matriarch of the British Empire," as well as a major propopent of its expansion. Between 1814 (just 23 years before Victoria ascended the throne) and the heyday of her reign in 1881, the population of the British Empire literally QUINTUPLED in size. By the time she died in 1901, Victoria was ruling over roughly 400 million "subjects," in British-ruled territory that covered approximately 25% of the globe. It hit its peak in 1919 (7 years before Elizabeth II's birth) under the reign of George V, after Britain acquired a bunch of German territories under Treaty of Versailles at the end of WWI. By contrast, when Elizabeth took the throne in 1952—about five years after India & Pakistan kicked off a major wave of decolonisation efforts—Britain's global territory had shrunk by approximately 68%. By 1970, it had decreased even further:

Now, there's absolutely no disputing that Queen Victoria's imperialism is part of Queen Elizabeth's family legacy. That's true both from a historical and financial perspective, and something about which I am extremely salty! Victoria fucking ransacked India, and today's royals still have the spoils. If you want to join Desi people in hating Liz & Co. for never giving us our fucking stolen diamond back, be my guest. In fact, we will make you cups of chai and feed you rotis while you bitch about it with us. But saying that Elizabeth II was directly responsible for colonising half 1/4 of the globe is not only factually incorrect, but factually incorrect in a way that either outright erases the most devastating periods of British imperialism (if you're only including events from 1952-present), or effectively absolves the people who actually engineered the violence (if you're mentally replacing Liz for Vicky). Now, I admittedly have more beef with Queen Victoria, because my grandfather and great-aunties on the Indian side were literally born under her reign (yes, really, I'm old), but even so, it seems weird to just... rewrite the whole thing. And speaking of absolving people, like... yes, the monarchy is a ridiculous fucking institution built on ill-gotten wealth and oppression of the working classes, no argument from me there. But they are not solely responsible for colonialism, and I don't like the implication that it was masterminded single-handedly by one figurehead with a crown whose political role is largely ceremonial. Like, first of all, look up the fucking East India Company, an evil-from-the-depths-of-hell-level corporation built on greed and human suffering. They were acting as agents of British imperialism across swathes of Africa and Asia, eons before Queen Victoria was even born. The British government only got dominion over India after they intervened to stop the East India Company from exerting too much political and commercial control. Like, read up on Robert Clive and the Battle of Plassey sometime, and then imagine Jeff Bezos or Elon Musk buying the French army to invade the Indian subcontinent. While we're talking about ye olden colonising CEOs, ever heard of Cecil Rhodes? Of course, he had a lot of help in fucking over South Africa from the PM, Lord Salisbury. It was actually Disraeli's idea to confer the title of 'Empress of India' on Queen Victoria. It's estimated that around 3.8 million people died during the 1943 Bengal famine, which was basically the result of a Winston Churchill policy failure. And it was not any monarch, but Secretary of State for the Colonies Joseph Chamberlain, who said "I believe that the British race is the greatest of the governing races that the world has ever seen… It is not enough to occupy great spaces of the world's surface unless you can make the best of them. It is the duty of a landlord to develop his estate." Like, yeah fuck the monarchy for the role they played, but don't act like one single hand-waving, ribbon-cutting inbred royal was the British Empire's master architect, when this was very much one of history's worst fucking group projects.

Finally, a smaller correction, but that above "List of sovereign states headed by Elizabeth II" is mostly comprised of former colonies/Commonwealth countries. Now, is the Commonwealth a vestige of Britain's bygone colonialism? Absolutely, no doubt. But nonetheless, that's still a list of independent nations with their own governments who—at some point between 1952-present—chose to have the monarch as a state figurehead (albeit not a choice I understand). Also, if you actually look at the chart, it's presently only a total of 15 countries who still have the monarch as a ceremonial figurehead (including the UK itself, Canada, and Australia). You'll also note that more than half of these countries have severed ties already, including Barbados, who just became a republic last year (way to go, Barbados!), and I'm hoping that Charles's relative unpopularity will see more nations follow suit. Still, the point stands: It doesn't really make sense to post that as "evidence" of the fact that Elizabeth herself was personally responsible for "half the world's colonisation," when 1) It only dates back to 1952, well after the peak of the empire 2) None of the nations listed are current British Overseas Territories 3) The linked chart actually shows a decline in independent states using the monarch as a figurehead since the late 1980s. It's quite literally making the opposite point as intended.

Anyway, as somebody who doesn't like the monarchy, and thinks a lot about the irrevocable damage wrought by British colonialism, I am begging you guys not to downplay or rewrite its actual history for the sake of a pithy sound-byte on Tumblr dot com. "Queen Elizabeth spent a lifetime benefiting from the spoils of her family's imperialist endeavours, and may have recently used some of that tainted wealth to help her son pay out a settlement to the woman who publicly accused him of sex trafficking" is a perfectly accurate, and scathingly damning statement; you do not need to rewrite British history to make it sound like the woman personally conquered India with an army of bloodthirsty corgis just to make your point.

Okay, so I just saw a tiktok saying "hey, ao3 is not tiktok. Do not censor words, especially in the tags." I stg people are losing brain cells. The tiktoker then proceeded to show an example of the tag they saw which was:

I don't know who needs to, once again, hear this, but you are stopping the tagging system, and filtration system from working.

People censor words on platforms like tiktok to stop the algorithm from picking up their video and automatically taking it down or restricting it.

A tagging system works so that other people can easily filter the content they do and don't want to see. So if some had "suicidal ideation" in their filtered tags so that they won't see things containing that subject matter, by censoring the word suicidal, you have now stopped the tagging/filtration system from working and now the individual is going to see content that they had made sure to filter out.

Please stop censoring words and/or phrases. Especially in tags. You are literally stopping the system from working and doing its job. Ao3 (and Tumblr) is not tiktok. The tags are there for a reason. Don't censor them.

As a person who lives in arizona (HOT desert climate) where every single summer is Like This (46c+ temps daily), here are some tips.

Europeans i’m very sorry you’re dealing with 30n weather at 60n latitudes. Please be safe. I’m also sorry for every ignorant southern american who’s telling you that this is how summer is every year - one peek at a map should have told them that britain should NOT have texas/southern USA temps.

1. Drink so much more water than you think you need.

2. Wear sunscreen, seriously. Especially if you live somewhere that doesn’t normally get this hot. Even if there’s cloud cover you can burn. Wear sunscreen on your scalp if your hair is thin enough that the sun hits it. Same for if your hair is pretty short or super blonde.

3. Stay inside as much as possible. Honestly. Even the people who live here in AZ stay inside when it’s like this.

4. Wear light, loose clothes. Try to stick with natural fibers instead of polyester and the like. If you can swing it, even wear loose undies.

5. If you start to feel Generally Shitty, go the heck inside. There’s a long list of symptoms I’m sure you’ve seen for heat exhaustion and heatstroke, but the general thing is that if you feel bad, go inside. Personally, i get cold and clammy, a headache, and vertigo, but everyone’s different. Listen to your body. You really, really, really, really don’t want heat exhaustion. I promise.

5.1. If you’re nauseated from the heat sip water. Don’t just not eat or drink because you’re sick to your stomach - the nausea is because you’re dehydrated.

6. Do you guys have air conditioning? I genuinely do not know. If you don’t, put a bowl of ice in front of a fan. I had no ac last summer and this works really well.

7. Getting water on you helps cool you down even in humid climates like britain. I use a tiny spray bottle with water and aloe on my face and arms when it’s really hot.

8. Wear shoes! The pavement and even the grass will burn your feet.

9. This is not the time to get a tan.

10. Don’t use your oven if you can help it. My oven doesn’t turn on at all from may to september.

Adding that you should absolutely consume sugar— it’s easy to ignore in the heat but sweating releases important electrolytes and other such things from the body. Even something as simple as some skittles can help.

The ‘Shinsou replaced Mineta’ troupe is popular in fics but something I’ve noticed is that the fics seem to literally just put Shinsou in Mineta’s seat when describing class room scenes but if you consider the fact that the seating plan goes by Alphabetic order of the Japanese alphabet then in the ‘Shinsou replaced Mineta’ universes the seating plan would actually look like this

All the talk about “oh Elon Musk’s buying twitter now all the people who fled from tumblr to twitter are gonna come back here” and gotta say. I’m on edge. SOMETHING happened to tumblr between 2018 and 2020 that turned it from a warzone to a tolerable shitposting website and my one best guess has always been that the p/orn ban sent so many people packing to twitter that we ended up exporting all our native-grown gremlins to the bird site. I back this theory up by the fact that all batshit fandom drama I hear about these days comes from twitter.

Success, friends, and a great partner make for a quasi-paradise while he’s away. But when the office is tasked with a missing person’s case, the team quickly finds themselves chasing down a crime ring centered on trafficking people with feral quirks. Against old wounds, Ochako will stop at nothing to free the people trapped on display, and keep her partner from becoming ensnared as well.

Her breath curled in front of her face, the only warmth in the frosty air. Even as the medics checked her over from the back of an ambulance, she couldn’t stop staring up at the apartment building before her.

It was dark now. Streetlamps had flickered on as the sun disappeared behind the ocean, giving way to the deepest curtain of blue and violet behind the skyscrapers and city lights. Even in that gloom it was plain to see the building she and her fellow heroes had just emerged was lifeless. Red and white emergency lights illuminated the faded brickwork and the wood boarding up each window. Uravity could have sworn each had held lamp light just that afternoon, but, according to the police, that had never been.
