breath hitched, hands trembled, but her words were cemented into the air. ‘it's because i have nothing left to lose, that i'm willing to do what others won't. it's a gift, and it's a curse. so don't pity me too hard.’

“i don't remember high school being this hard.” not that she remembers much of high school: romeo, at benvolio's age, was too busy learning the difference between vampires and sirens, and how she could kill them. trigonometry, home economics, and sciences were far from her priorities. “would they be against tutoring two beautiful women? call me crazy, but i'm pretty sure no one would say no to that. oh, please do it with me. i could use the supportive company.”

he smiled, blushing almost at the flattery as he couldn't help but joke, " careful with the stories y'er feedin' him. i might not be able to live up to that kind'a pressure. " he took a breath in at the question, forcing a nod. " — just... same old. " if only. " well, y'know how it goes — " he added, quick to justify his hesitation. " but hey, at the least the world isn't at the brink of ending every other year anymore... " there was honest comfort in that. " what about you? how's the white-picket-fence life been treatin' ya so far? "

“i don't tell him anything that's not true.” the mother hummed: the brothers were heroes to him, because he'd been there too. small, barely a child of two years old, and he was here now because of them. “well. i may exaggerate that puff, puff, pass ghost story. it's his favorite.” the once huntress catches the hesitation, notes the — odd way he's been acting since she's opened the door. but she doesn't probe, doesn't ask quite yet. the life of hunting wasn't rainbows and unicorns, no matter if your last name was winchester, so she chalks it up to a hard week. “boring. it's still weird — no typical mondays of running from ghouls, or hacking up vampires. instead, i'm here picking out kindergartens, hosting birthday parties, and playing the single mother. it's an adjustment, for sure.” she chuckles, but the air around her is unmistakably softer. “but something's been ... weird, lately. and my gut feeling told me to call you.” it's never been wrong before.

she stares, lightly blinking at the reaction to her apology, clearing her throat and shifting in her seat; she's not uncomfortable, no, but she also didn't expect such a casual reaction or response. especially when talking about something so tragic. at the other's teasing, though, rapunzel offers a small smile. "well, the offer still stands. consider it like an i owe you, or something." turning in her seat now, rapunzel offers romeo her full attention, listening intently as she explains. "was it the same beast?" she asks quietly, lightly shaking her head. "jeez, thank god that hunter showed up. and thank god that they adopted you, too; that must have been a nice change." a good life, too, hopefully.

“i'm not going to punch you.” romeo wasn't one for pity. her life was a mess, it's a fact — but it was hers, and she lived to make it worth something. wallowing in sorrow, remembering the people she lost and self pity was an insult to the memory of her parents, her aunt and to john winchester. “yeah, same one. guess it was still lurking around.” waiting for her. it's hard to lose prey when it's standing right in front of you, is the theory she's been working with for years. it would've been smarter back then, to just let ghosts be ghosts, roam around that blasted cabin until they were ready. “i'm here, right? hunting, killing things, saving people. i'd say it's a pretty good life.”

haven't even made her yet, but thinking about how it would be such a gradual arc. how at first, hunting didn't even cross her mind: she was too busy healing the relationship between herself and her family. too busy processing. then her research was purely innocent, a way to ensure that her family was protected.

the real turn around happened when crowley had tommy killed. and she takes that hard: like she failed. because tommy was marked to the teeth with protection wards, had little talismans. haley had gone through tiring efforts to try and make sure her family would never fall into the hands of monsters.

she's so pissed when she hears through the grapevine that dean and sam have been seen with crowley. it's explosive, because that particular brand of hate stems from a deep respect for the brothers. they saved her family once, they saved her. so yeah, she's angry. she's fired up. and that's when she starts hunting - and it causes a strain between her and ben. she's gone for months, leaving nothing but notes. and one day she comes back home to ben gone, a note of his own: he's not doing this again. tommy was dead, but it feels like he lost them both that day.
