my train stop for the arbour discord event! a lovely little monster!Shen Yuan AU with some classic obsessive affection from both Shen Yuan and Binghe, classic! i gave it the title "PIDW Playthrough: Easy Mode"

in this au Shen Yuan actually transmigrates well before Binghe is born. he's supposed to transmigrate into Shen Qingqiu's body (hence some silmilarities in facial shapes, as much as Shen Yuan currently has discernible facial shapes) but Shen Qingqiu is still very much alive and kicking (and still a street urchin), so the System hits a wall with where to put him. this causes Shen Yuan's soul to "fester" in a way, and grow into a virus that then turns on the System.

yes, he eats the System. as a treat for all the system haters out there. this means that he successfully consumes everything the System contained, including the mandatory story structure and information on nearly every parameter of the PIDW world, among other things. the only issue is that this information takes a lot of time and effort to actually digest, and it puts him in a kind of coma, which means he wakes up approximately a year into Binghe's tutelage and abuse on Qing Jing Peak.

Shen Yuan wakes up as a creature that exists in the blank spaces of PIDW, in the shadows and beneath rocks and in the dark night sky. he also wakes up incredibly weak, with barely any power and in a body that is formless and so undefined that he has trouble interacting with the world around him. he has knowledge though, a lot of it, and he uses it to find his way to Qing Jing Peak and to the woodshed where Luo Binghe sleeps. their first encounter begins with Shen Yuan sneaking in through the gap beneath the door, tugging a small jar of medicine with him. Luo Binghe's body recognises his presence as something ancient and eldritch, even as his mind struggles to see what's so scary about a puddle of shadows with two bright blue, rectangular eyes. and so the saga of Shen Yuan living in Luo Binghe's shadows begins. Shen Yuan gathers his strength while following Luo Binghe around, giving him advice after advice, teaching him, helping him practise. for every punishment Shen Qingqiu doles out, Shen Yuan commits a petty crime or two, although Binghe insists that it's fine. he's loyal to Shen Yuan now, who seems happiest when he manages to help Luo Binghe, and who teaches him more and better than any other hallmaster.

Shen Yuan goes on all available side-quests, saving Liu Qingge in the Lingshi-caves and assisting Luo Binghe and Cang Qiong as a whole during the demonic invasion. he's pulled into the dreamscape Meng Mo builds for Luo Binghe, where Luo Binghe once again refuses to take Meng Mo as his Shizun. when the Immortal Alliance Conference rolls around, Shen Yuan helps Luo Binghe in his battle with the Black Moon Rhynoceros Python when his cradle seal breaks, but hesitates when Shen Qingqiu is about to push Luo Binghe into the Abyss. he ultimately lets him, if only so that Binghe will finally be free from Shen Qingqiu's abuse. they fall together, Shen Yuan cushioning Luo Binghe's landing, and then they search for Xin Mo together. with Shen Yuan's knowledge it's laughably easy, and they resurface in the Demon Realm a few months later, where Shen Yuan insists that they spend some time in seclusion so that Binghe can grow into his new body and his new sword (which Shen Yuan somehow bullies into being relatively docile. he's an omnipotent eldritch monster, he can totally do that. i don't make the rules). neither of them says anything about how nice this seclusion is, or how they kind of don't want to go back to society ever again.

demonic heritage and Xin Mo mastered, they go on a roadtrip to absolutely demolish Mobei Jun and every other Demon King/Demon Noble/etc. and gain power in the Demon Realm. Shen Yuan insists that they do so for the sake of reaching Luo Binghe's "bright, glorious fate" (minus the wives, which he bristles at the mere thought of. his sweet Binghe is too good for those shallow women!). Luo Binghe is not sure he cares enough so long as he gets to curl up among Shen Yuan's silky-soft, gentle tendrils every night and gets to hear him ramble on about this or that random monster they came across. one day, as he's cleaning Xin Mo at the edge of a bloodied battlefield with Shen Yuan at his back telling him what a good job he did, he says so. Shen Yuan is confused - doesn't Binghe want power and riches and revenge? but Luo Binghe tells him he doesn't really care at all, so long as Shen Yuan stays with him.

that's as far as i thought, so cue the obligatory Shen Yuan freak-out (can a mass of non-binary but male-identifying shadows be gay? maybe it's better not to put a label on it) aaaand yeah they totally get married. they probably get a small cottage in the middle of nowhere relatively close to a village and live a quiet, happy existence for the rest of their lives, occasionally interrupted by this or that demon or cultivator appearing to kill Luo Binghe the demon emperor and bring his head back as retribution for his or her ancestors (Binghe totally ditched his half-assembled empire for that monster D. he does not give a fuck). maybe they go on adventures together. Shen Yuan gets infinite chances to infodump, and Luo Binghe stares at him with heart eyes as he listens. win-win.

cut to Shang Qinghua frantically panicking about where the protaginst is. nothing gets resolved, but at least bingyuan are happy, i guess. maybe Shang Qinghua gathers his energy and helps Mobei Jun usurp the throne instead. or not. what do i know.

O Soul, have you watched the SVSSS donghua? If so (or whenever you do), can you talk about it? (and oi, not just about Wu Lei's Wu Lei-ness, 'kay? Ofc, that too! But More 'cuz I adore your posts!)

sldkfjsldjkf ANON I can't believe you called me out and dragged me like that in a public forum because......... you're completely right............ I definitely would have made this entire post about Wu Lei if you hadn't intervened........................................

okay but listen, Wu Lei really makes this show work because the entirety of SVSSS pivots around the central character of Shen Qingqiu, so you have to, you absolutely have to get someone who can pull off the range of "internal disaster constantly in the middle of a metafictional meltdown" and "external badass who's a bit of a bitch but consistently cool as a cucumber" (one might even say, a peerless cucumber, great okay I'll see myself out now)

the POINT I'm trying to make is that a lesser voice actor might not have been able to conduct those hairpin-reversals at the speed of incredulity as well as Wu Lei does, but he has such an incredible range (as well as like, pitch and breath control, and crisp yet expressive high-speed enunciation, and — I'll stop now). the number of times I've idly pulled up the first episode to just re-listen to the opening monologue... many. many times. never fails to bring a smile to my face. I don't even watch the sequence I just put it on in the background while, like, kneading dough or whatever

okay, but credit where credit is due — the voice director, naturally, but also the scriptwriter! I feel like SVSSS is a particularly challenging text to adapt because honestly? I'd say a solid 70% of it resides in Shen Qingqiu's wackass internal narration, which is wildly difficult to translate into a visual medium. so for the scriptwriter to go at the original text with, well, a handsaw and select only the choicest of his 吐槽 roasts is quite the feat since there is SUCH a wealth to choose from

what else, let's see... ahahaha I guess we can talk about the animation, which for the record I am quite fond of! pre-February of this year, I was skeptical of 3D wuxia/xianxia animation, but SHJX completely sold me on it so I was game for the SVSSS donghua. and honestly, 3D animation works super well for SVSSS because they can really lean into the ways 3D animation is reminiscent of video games, and, well (waves vaguely) System. even the endearingly cringey elements of it (bless their hearts, they tried on their fight choreography but they certainly did not have the budget of SHJX sdlkfjsdklf) played into the overall irreverent tone of SVSSS. these lines are stereotypical/awkward/flat-out dumb? satire! the design/animation/movement choreography is mediocre? satire! they really can't lose here, which makes it a manic kind of delightful

my main gripe with the donghua I guess would be the pacing because... sldkfjsldkj yeah it's, uh, terrible. also they clearly ran out of money partway through? again, bless their hearts — I suspect that their original outline took season 1 through the abyss-yeet (thus, the fact that they had the designs and recordings necessary for the post-credits stinger) , and if my suspicions are correct, season 2 will cover everything up to chapter 43 because... c'mon, it's the perfect moment for a season break. well, I shan't hold their shoestring budget against them because they really got quite far on it, and also got renewed for season 2!!! go them!!!

tl;dr the SVSSS donghua is fun!!! I'm hype for season 2!!! I desperately want an audiodrama of SVSSS with 原班人马!!! but in the meantime I've found the audiobook just like, on YouTube, which is 1) a slightly different brand of batshit wild and 2) I mean... (checks audiobook queue) yeah I can jettison all of my library books in favor of this, right? right then what could possibly go wrong

Hunxi, your meta about BingQiu is absolutely amazing and I 100% agree with you about the fact that the book ends at their beginning. Like, shit. That’s some powerful stuff. And it makes me sad that people judge the book based on the main story and then completely disregard the extras. I do wonder what you think about Shang Qinghua, our Airplane Bro. Do you like him as a character? An Ding Peak? How he’s bullied a lot? What do you think of the Moshang couple? So sorry, just knowing you like QQ AND SV has me sooo excited!!

ahaha I mean I took a solid few weeks break between finishing the main story and starting the extras so I’m quite fond of the main story the way it is. MXTX’s works in general tend to suffer from a lot of bad faith readings, which is pretty unfortunate because like you said, she’s got a lot of powerful stuff in there!!! her protagonists grapple with a number of issues ranging from the world-ending to the minute, and it’s both delightful and revelatory to see her characters make mistakes, clown on themselves, and struggle to work through things to become better and happier -- always, crucially happier. there’s such a focus on joy and how/where to find it when the world around you is on fire in her books that, if you’re not careful, it both can and will lay you out flat on your bedroom floor on a weeknight, haha no not speaking from experience at all, what makes you say that

I’m afraid I don’t have many thoughts about Shang Qinghua beyond the fact that he is, like, peak hilarity at all hours, if he is in a scene it is guaranteed to be laugh-out-loud funny and I do love that about him

beyond that, he’s a wonderful foil for Shen Qingqiu, and I mean that besides their shared metafictional transmigratory tendencies -- both of them respond to Plot Events with a similar mix of 1) sass, 2) reflexive roasting, and 3) matter-of-fact decency. I am specifically thinking of the moments where they roast each other verbally (beginning with their first official conversation because I will never stop laughing about Shen Qingqiu, three seconds after their mutual stunned silence of finding another transmigrator, immediately yelling plot holes! elementary school language! unfulfilled plot threads! in Shang Qinghua’s face), to their eventual relationship of being able roast each other with just an eloquent eyebrow raise. Likewise, we see in the extras that Shang Qinghua shares Shen Qingqiu’s habit of doing Actually Very Noble Things while passing it off as 1) saving his own skin, and 2) the basic, human, decent thing to do. Both share similarly optimistic, sarcastic, and supremely oblivious attitudes towards their world and circumstances, which enable them to navigate the (frankly rather treacherous) plot of PIDW/SVSSS with humor and a baffling amount of grace

(I’ve also been thinking lately about the fact that, had SVSSS not been mediated through Shen Qingqiu’s hilarity and blisteringly sarcastic humor, it honestly would have been. uh. extremely traumatizing and mildly terrifying? yeah)

I think where the difference between Shen Qingqiu and Shang Qinghua lies is, well -- Shen Qingqiu (likes to pretend that he) has dignity (他的老脸总是拉不下来啊）, whereas Shang Qinghua has gleefully and shamelessly thrown that out the window. “I have noble literary aspirations!” he says while selling out in a heartbeat. Never forget that, when all the dust from SVSSS settles and Shen Qingqiu confronts Shang Qinghua in the last chapter, Shang Qinghua literally says:

尚清华：“你瞧不起基佬男主吗？纯文学作品，都喜欢塑造基佬。你看，”

Shang Qinghua: “What, do you look down on gay protagonists? Literary authors, artistic works, all of them like portraying gay characters. Look--”

他掰手指：“断背山，白先勇，霸王别姬，经典，名家，他们都喜欢写基佬。纯文学青睐基佬你知道吗？！”

He counted on his fingers. “Brokeback Mountain, Bai Xianyong, Farewell My Concubine--classics, famous authors, all of them like writing about gay dudes. Pure literature favors gay dudes, don’t you know?!”

anyway, as someone who has put in Hours (weeks, months, years even) doing backstage and technical work in theater, let me just say that An Ding Peak is Such a Goddamn Mood. 后勤无罪，后勤万岁 indeed -- seeing the little offhand mentions of An Ding Peak and all of Shang Qinghua’s copious eye-rolling about the other peaks freely abusing An Ding Peak’s services honestly reminded me of John Scalzi’s Redshirts, which is, incidentally, an absolutely insane novel and one I heartily recommend for anyone who loves (and loves to gently roast) the Star Trek franchise

uhh l’m running on a deficit of brain cells these days so I’m just going to throw some of my favorite Iconique Shang Qinghua Moments (TM) in the rest of this post and call it a day:

exhibit A, aka Shang Qinghua Actually Being Pretty Heroic But Treating It Like Another Goddamn Tuesday:

漠北君像是完全没料到自己也会有被人打飞的一天，保持着这种表情，转眼坠下埋骨岭。尚清华魂飞魄散，抓了一把剑就冲过去，沈清秋忙拽住他：“你干啥！”

It was like Mobei-jun had never imagined that he would one day be knocked flying by someone else, so his expression remained frozen on his face. In the blink of an eye, he had fallen down Maigu Ridge. Shang Qinghua, scared out of his wits, grabbed a sword and was about to chase after him when Shen Qingqiu hurriedly pulled him back. “What are you doing!”

尚清华咆哮道：“我靠，他不会飞啊！”说完便跳了下去。

Shang Qinghua bellowed, “Fuck, he doesn’t know how to fly!” And immediately jumped down [after Mobei-jun]. (chapter 79)

friendly reminder that Maigu Ridge is currently the location of two realms being squished together like grilled cheese in a panini press, and Shang Qinghua just. jumps right into the middle of it for his shitty employer that he nevertheless would die for

exhibit B, of Shang Qinghua being petty and Extremely Iconic About It:

尚清华道：“你什么你？又是‘你敢’？告诉你，我现在还就真敢了。来！” Shang Qinghua said, “What about me? What do you mean ‘do you dare?’ I’m telling you, I’m daring right now. Come on!”

说完撸起袖子，当着漠北君铁青的脸跃跃欲试活动拳头。漠北君眼神里嗖嗖放出冷刀子，尚清华毫不畏惧，一拳挥出，冲着他的脸就是一下。 Finishing, he rolled up his sleeves and began warming up his fists right in front of Mobei-jun’s ashen face. Mobei-jun’s gaze was like cold knives, but Shang Qinghua seemed utterly fearless, throwing out a fist at his face.

漠北君本能地别过了脸，只觉得脸皮一紧。 Mobei-jun could have turned his face away, but felt his skin tighten.

很陌生的感觉。有点痒，有点小疼，却完全不是预料的重击。 A strange feeling. A little itchy, a little painful, but completely not the impact he had been expecting.

尚清华两根手指捏住他一边的脸颊，使劲儿往外拉，道：“怎样，痛不痛？！” Shang Qinghua used two fingers to pinch one of his cheeks, pulling outwards with force, and said, “How about that, does it hurt?!”

边拉边想，这他妈跟老子心里想做的不一样啊！揍他啊，趁他不能动揍他啊。拉拉脸就算，怎么看也是自己亏了！ While pulling, he thought, this wasn’t what he fucking wanted to do at all! Beat him, take advantage of when [Mobei-jun] couldn’t move to beat him up! Just pinching his face? No matter how you cut it, this was a terrible deal!

但是没办法，果然……还是下不了手揍这张脸！ But there was nothing he could do, since in the end... he still couldn’t bring himself to hit this face!

漠北君被拉得口齿不清，坚持道：“你完了！” Mobei-jun’s face was being distorted so much his words came out muffled, but he stubbornly said, “You’re done for!”

尚清华嘎嘎笑道：“有骨气，这种状况下还能威胁我，爹欣赏你。” Shang Qinghua guffawed, “You have some spine, threatening me in your current state. Your father appreciates you.”

他另一只手也加入进来，捏住漠北君另一边脸，一会儿往相反方向拉，一会挤成一团。漠北君往日里高贵冷艳的形象被他一双贱手毁得鸡犬不留。尚清华嘴里还重复：“还不痛？痛不痛？” His other hand joined in, pinching Mobei-jun’s other cheek. He tugged [Mobei-jun’s] cheeks in opposite directions, then smushed them together. Mobei-jun’s past aloof coldness and stunning beauty were thoroughly destroyed beneath his dirty hands. Shang Qinghua repeated, “Doesn’t it hurt? Huh?”

Shang Qinghua: I’m going to exact my revenge upon you for all the pain I’ve suffered at your hands!

Shang Qinghua: (gives Mobei-jun the cheek smushies of his life)

just. if bingqiu is a flaming clown car careening off the side of an upside-down mountain range, then moshang is the rest of the circus, blithely following close after while continuing to bang cymbals together to provide the clown music to the unending clownery of SVSSS

Omg Hunxi! You’ve read SVSSS?! What did you think of it? What’s your opinion on Luo Binghe? It’s often looked down upon among the 3 novels, but I personally love it and it’s chaotic energy.

I mean, I've only read 2/3 of MXTX's novels, but I have a suspicion that SVSSS might be my favorite because the book is batshit insane and also so much fun

there's this manic energy to it that generates a heady mix of irreverence and intensity, slingshotting you from startled laughter to stunned silence and right back with the maximum amount of emotional whiplash possible

incidentally, this novel taught me more Chinese internet slang in <100 chapters than I've learned in my entire life

the best analogy I think I could make might be that... SVSSS kind of has the same energy as Bo Burnham's Inside? in that it is simultaneously a satire, a love letter, a deconstruction, and a reimagining of a genre (for Inside, Netflix comedy specials; for SVSSS, transmigration and stallion webnovels), while doing a really damn good job of its most direct purpose (being a rollicking good ride all the way down)

but sdlkfjsdlfkj Luo Binghe. oh man what a character

I feel like, no matter what long paragraphs or thematic complexity I can tease out of Luo Binghe and his characterization, his character arc and journey, no amount of words I write can beat @blackelement7's one-sentence summation of his character, which is: it's hard to be Luo Binghe

and really, much of SVSSS revolves around the deconstruction of narrative and character tropes--like, literally. (Shen Yuan as) Shen Qingqiu dismantles the ludicrously hackneyed and exaggerated plot of PIDW and accidentally puts it back together in a different shape just by, y'know, existing and being -- get ready for this -- a decent person

so Luo Binghe fits into this whole agenda by deconstructing a familiar archetype of the masculine, heroic protagonist--virile, undefeatable, hopelessly attractive, naturally talented, beloved of fate/happenstance/coincidence, unique and unlikely inheritor of multiple legacies, gifted with unrealistic sexual prowess. he has the tragic orphan origin story, the bitterly cruel and traumatic youth, then the vengeful return, the eventual violent triumph over those who had wronged him, his """happy""" ending of supreme power and supreme sexual satisfaction and supreme unbeatability

or at least, that's the original Luo Binghe

MXTX takes this larger-than-life legendary figure and shows us his hidden shadows, his deep insecurities, the flaws that have been expunged by the demands of readers and narrative (and oh boy does this book have things to say about the relationship between the author and the consumer). she takes the original Luo Binghe (and by extension, the entire stallion genre) gently by the hand and asks, have you found love?

I have a harem of hundreds of beautiful women, the original Luo Binghe replies.

have you found satisfaction? MXTX asks.

I rule the entire world, both human and demonic realms, he replies.

are you happy? MXTX asks, and cruelly, crucially--the original Luo Binghe cannot answer yes, and have that be true

MXTX takes every aspect of the original Luo Binghe and systematically subverts it: his virility is undercut by the fact that the person of his affections prefers Luo Binghe's younger, innocent self, not the virile, manly man that maidens ostensibly swoon over. Luo Binghe's undefeatability and ridiculous talents are undercut by the fact that no amount of strength, or power, or influence, will get him what he truly wants -- Shen Qingqiu's genuine love and affection. in the original PIDW, the goddamn trauma congo line that Luo Binghe gets put through only makes him stronger, laying the foundation of his eventual, triumphant, vengeful return. but in SVSSS, we see all the ways that Luo Binghe's trauma doesn't make him stronger -- in fact, leads him to incredible levels of insecurity and self-sabotage and self-hatred

or, in short:

PIDW: I've done it, I've crafted the perfect stallion novel protagonist

MXTX, busily typing: no you haven't, you've fucked up a perfectly nice young man is what you've done. look at him, he's got enough trauma to cause the apocalypse

a lot of our understanding of Luo Binghe is filtered through the lens of Shen Qingqiu, who is one of the most unreliable narrators I've ever had the privilege of laughing at. much of Shen Qingqiu's character arc in the novel is coming to realize that the people around him -- Luo Binghe, yes, but also Yue Qingyuan, Liu Qingge, all the women previously dismissed as love interests, and even, eventually, Shen Jiu -- are actually people too, not just flat fictional characters, but individuals with agendas and feelings and unwritten histories of their own. Shen Qingqiu is so preoccupied (and rightfully so!) with his fate and foreknowledge of the plot that he fails to notice for a comically long time that the plot has changed on him while he was busy jumping to conclusions about what certain people must be thinking

but back to Luo Binghe. the novel takes Luo Binghe's intense traumas and fears -- abandonment, self-loathing, rejection and very real hurt -- and makes them matter. past suffering doesn't just build character to make you stronger in the future -- you have to come to terms with it first, gain closure, let the wound heal over before you can safely build upon it. and despite having loyal subordinates, despite having more love interests than he can shake a evil sword at, Luo Binghe has no one to truly, emotionally support him

all those people flocking around him, all those women (allegedly) trying to sleep with him, and Luo Binghe doesn't have a single friend

the original PIDW would have you believe that's indicative of his strength and independence, his ability to stand alone. a Man (TM). MXTX takes one look at that and calls bullshit

or, in other words:

PIDW: I've done it, I've crafted the ultimate male fantasy

MXTX, typing faster: no you haven't, you've subscribed to toxic masculinity is what you've done. you created a lonely, overpowered young man who only knows how to deal with his problems through violence. look at him, he's got abandonment issues and unhealthy masochistic tendencies

(masochism is fine! but someone needs to gently pull Luo Binghe back into the realm of kink rather than deliberate self-harm, and while we're at it someone please give this man a hug without also detonating at the same time)

SVSSS takes the unrealistic, overperfected model of an archetypal male protagonist and shows us all the ways this person (and this model) is broken. the text constantly cracks jokes about 'the protagonist halo,' but for much of the book, Luo Binghe is never allowed to be a person--he is always The Protagonist, the half-demon spawn, the existential threat to the human cultivation world, and Luo Binghe’s continual dehumanization breaks him. and guess what? the eventual resolution of the conflict comes from nothing more and nothing less than Shen Qingqiu showing kindness. was it messy and fraught as hell? you fucking bet it was. but was the underlying message of the entire story also as simple as "but the villain needs love too!" you fucking bet it was.

this is a running theme in MXTX’s writing--we see it prominently in both SVSSS and TGCF: the colossal, literally world-saving power of empathy, and kindness, and love, and forgiveness, and that, I think, is crucial for understanding and appreciating Luo Binghe as a character

I can't (absolutely can) believe that this silly novel is what's getting me to draw more cartoony/comic things again. I can't recommend this series casually but if this kind of insanity appeals to you, maybe you'll enjoy it too :D
