Sometimes you’re an adult when you’re 12, sometimes when you’re 18, sometimes when you’re on your own for the first time and sometimes never. It all really depends on your situation. For me, I think, it was when I bought my condo, it was the first real thing that I owned myself. It’s when I really felt like an adult.” Ophelia then laughed, embarrassed by how she had gone on some rant about being an adult, but she was a little older, and maybe not wiser, but she figured her perspective could hopefully be a little helpful. 

Sawyer nodded along, absorbing the woman’s words. She wondered if she had done several adult things, why didn’t she feel like one? “Did people start treating you differently? Better? Worse?”

Mason looks at her. “ I think it’s about accepting responsibility for yourself and not trying to get people to do everything for you, it’s also about getting out there and making your way in the world without someone there holding your hand.”

“Then I guess I became an adult over ten years ago,” she joked, though only a half-hearted chuckle left her. “It’s... stupid how that happens.”

“Come on. I’m really good at keeping secrets. Who am I gonna tell? My two year old sister?”

Landon laughed looking at her. “All I’ve had today is a sports drink and lots and lots of coffee… maybe that’s the issue?”

“I probably shouldn’t have refilled your coffee then. Lots? Got somethin’ on your mind?”

“ I am normally so much better controlled than that, but that just came out of nowhere!” He replied looking at her smiling as his cheeks start to fade. 

“You might wanna refrain from drinking too much Pepsi Cola and drinkin’ through straws. At least that’s what I heard causes it. I can even pat your back if you need help getting it all out. I’m pretty much an expert.”

“What does it even mean to be an adult?” Sawyer thought out loud. “Is there a definin’ moment in your life or is it just thrust upon you? Is it age? Is it... is it attitude?”

Are you done being an asshole?’ he heard his assistant of fourteen years, query in a bored tone into the phone.  He had been sort of shittier than usual, on a rampage through the office, even taking it out on her, someone who he not only saw as an employee, but after all this time, considered a friend. The interns and newer employees, he knew by her calling him, she had taken care of, told them the boss was just having a bad day, but she had not yet forgiven him. He sighed as he waited in line to get coffee, his first cup of the day, he was running late and hadn’t had any yet, that and a shitty client had fucked over his mood earlier. “I’m about to drink the blood of some virgins, so, yeah. Shall I bring you a cup as a bid for forgiveness?” he chuckled into the phone. “Or will I need to buy you a set of pearls for pissing you off, dear?” he asked in a sickeningly sweet tone, laced with sarcasm.  Once the call was dropped, and his phone back in his pocket, he groaned slightly at the never ending line.  “I wonder who I have to blow around here to get my triple non fat latte”  came the mumble under his breath.

Sawyer had the morning off, a rare occasion, so she decided to take Dawson and Isabella out for some pastries and hot chocolate. The older and taller person in front of them was loud and obnoxious, not different from most men, but it was his language that was crude and disgusting. She covered her brother’s ears until the man was finished talking. “Excuse me, sir. I’d appreciate it greatly if you lowered your voice.” She darted her eyes to her siblings at her side who looked up at the patron with confused stares.

Landon burped loudly a lot louder than he’d expected to, looking around as he felt everyone’s eyes on him his eyes flush a light shade of pink. “ Sorry about that, I didn’t mean for it to come out like that.”

Sawyer chuckled as she refilled the man’s mug of coffee. “I’ve changed hundreds of diapers and I’ve cleaned up pee off the wall when my baby brother was potty training. Burping is probably least grossest hygienic habit.”

From a small town outside of San Antonio, Sawyer had big dreams. Consisting of what, she still didn’t know yet because her interests changed every month or so, but deep inside she was meant for something bigger than herself. When her drug addicted mother was deemed unfit to raise her youngest children, at just 22 she suddenly became the guardian of her eight year old brother and two year old sister. Sawyer’s going through struggles of learning what it means to be a responsible adult now that the lives of two people lie in her hands, but all she knows is that they are the most important people in her life. A lesbian who’s never been in a relationship, never been on a date nor never been kissed but she finds herself falling fast in love with almost every girl that is nice to her. She loves to skateboard and play basketball and her favorite band is The Killers.

sawyer comes from a big family, nine siblings, and she’s the third youngest of the bunch with her brother, dawson, and her sister, isabella, following in line at 8 and and 2 years old respectively

the rest of her siblings are all over the age of 18, and are her half siblings while dawson and isabella are her full siblings

they were raised by a single mom

her mom is a drug addict and lost custody of her two youngest children and now sawyer is their guardian

needing a fresh perspective, she was approved to move to portland so they couldn’t have the influence of their mother around

right now she works 40 hours a week as a caregiver at a retirement home and 20-28 hours a week working as a server at a dining establishment

she’s barely making enough to afford rent and to afford a babysitter for when she’s at school or work

but she manages, though she admits that she could use a lending hand

she took four years off after high school and enrolled at Harold Washington community college which she will attend part time in the fall. 

doesn’t know what she’s studying yet because she develops new interests every so often

loves skateboarding and basketball. she’s also a bit of a klutz so she always has bruises and scrapes on her legs from falling over

when she was in texas she volunteered at homeless shelters, animal shelters and other organizations every other weekend, believing that the most important thing to do in life is to give back to the less fortunate and wants to find something like that again

“I’ve never even been outside of Texas until I moved here. It would be a dream to visit Tanzania, where Freddie Mercury is from. I think to kinda just... be in that vicinity would be awesome.”

“I know this one is technically a thriller but there’s so much blood it might as well be horror. But You’re Next. Like that girl is a badass, like I’m in love with her.”

blackberry: is your life an action film, a comedy, a romantic comedy, or drama?

“I’d love for it to be a romantic comedy. Like meeting my soulmate in a coffee shop or some other meet-cute way. We’ll get married a ride off into the sunset. But for now my life is a drama. I’m trying to change that.”

coconut: favorite perfume?

“I don’t have one because I don’t wear perfume.”

kiwi: what's something that fascinates you?

“Everyone has a different perspective, comes from different walks of life and when you meet strangers a little bit of them will always somehow be a part of you.”

“I really, really want to get a tattoo but I don’t even know what of. It’s between my star sign constellation and the lyrics to Free Bird by Lynyrd Skynyrd. Like the Cause I'm as free as a bird now and this bird you'll never change.”

apple: what do you use more, tumblr or twitter?

“I don’t even know what I’d use Tumblr for. I use Twitter more but I don’t tweet anything funny or useful. I kinda just like looking at the funny memes.”

cherry: can you play any musical instruments or can you sing?

“Unfortunately I’m not very musically inclined. I dabble in playing the drums and I can play just one song on Acoustic guitar. I joined choir in high school but I’m not very good. I wish I could sing, though. Maybe I would post covers on Youtube and get paid doing that.”

✦ to learn about my character’s family

Sawyer’s relationship with her family, aside from Dawson and Isabella, is strained. As she is the third youngest of nine siblings, her older brothers and sisters have a different father from the three of them so they distanced themselves from the Craven clan, angry that their mother cheated on their father resulting in the conception of Sawyer. 

Reynold Craven, Sawyer’s father died from a drug overdose right before Isabella, now two years old, was born. Behind he left his wife, Mary, who is a drug addict as well to raise their children alone. But it wasn’t Mary who was taking care of Dawson and Isabella, it was Sawyer. It was Sawyer who drove them to school and helped them with their homework. It was Sawyer who made them breakfast, lunch and dinner, who signed her brother’s field trip permission slips, who changed their diapers and dressed them for the day.

Social Services eventually deemed Mary Craven an unfit parents and made Sawyer Dawson and Isabella’s permanent guardian.

The three siblings have always been close, but with their new family arrangement it just brought them closer together. Dawson and Isabella are Sawyer’s only family, as far as she’s concerned.

Sawyer’s hobbies and interests have ranged from jump-roping and as she developed affinities to several different hobbies. Activities she’s consistently enjoyed are skateboarding, basketball and volunteering at homeless shelters and animal shelters. Although the last one has been hard to keep up with for all the responsibilities that have thrust upon her.

Sawyer has always had difficulty finishing a book once she’s started. She would always get distracted and bored before halfway and start on something new. Goodnight Moon is one of the only books she’s gotten through from beginning to end.
