I know it's supposed to be all "Riley and Buffy are going through things and it's exacerbating why they're not right for each other" but it kinda just looks like Riley is cheating on Buffy while her mom is getting diagnosed with a brain tumor idk

I am not even sure that it's supposed to be that they are different people. If we think for ourselves then yes, they are different people and they need different things.

But if we look at the narrative they do not state it clear. And Xander's speech here doesn't sound and doesn't look like his own small opinion about it, they show it the way like what he says is true. They show that R did sht but then they suddenly try to justify it saying that he's the best guy she could ever have and it's mostly her fault that things went this way and they even make her run after him to try to "love him better" but she's late. That's the storyline. And from here it's absolutely not that obvious that the message is that they're not right for each other. The story had a choice to state that they're different better but they chose not to do that.

There is a short story with them a bit later but the plot mostly uses R to break the thing that was going on between 2 characters. Sometimes even contradicting the previous plot in relation to him. But they tend to do that when they want to state smth new and push for new narrative.

sorry i have a problem with this way of thinking about spuffy

i need everyone to stop projecting their ideas of normal/traditional healthy human relationship/dynamics onto spike and buffy because there is literally no way in hell anybody in this show is redeemable or worthy of forgiveness by any standard if you do that, including buffy herself. and it's a complete waste of nuance that was very deliberately crafted into the story too. spike is a villain and buffy is a hero and both want to kill each other for different reasons and they both actively try to do exactly that multiple times. both feel deep deep hatred for one another for most of the time they spend in the other's presence. spike should by all accounts try to kill her constantly because he is the villainnnnn. it's almost his job. same way buffy should want to kill him any chance she gets. that's the standard that's set and that the characters should meet. it's only when they get caught off guard by their own self reflected back to them through this other being that their preconceived ideas of how they should behave take a step back and they engage with each other almost softly, very gently. like in the scene that's referenced in the op.

i guess my problem with it is that it comes across as if fans only like spuffy because james marsters is hot and people are too dumb to think critically about the media they're consuming. which sure, seeing these dynamics could be harmful if you're a teenager watching, but not more harmful than, say, bangel. not by any standards. bangel might be worse by the simple fact that angel is not supposed to be perceived as a villain so anything he does gets idealized and romanticized, while spike is perceived as a villain and punished for it all the way to the end of the show.

it's because of everything bad spike and buffy have done to each other that the soft gentle things are all the more devastating. fans that like spuffy do so with their eyes fully open and mostly their moral compasses fully intact. there's no situation in real life that could mimic this because in real life if a man goes after you with a shotgun there are no amount of tears in the world that will stop him. if a man kidnaps you in real life and holds you hostage until you say you love him back you will not live to tell the tale. if a man attempts to rape you he's not doing so because he's a supernaturally soulless creature of the darkness, acting from a place of confusion and fully aware that you could stop him with a flick of your wrist, and because you're not a being that was gifted with superpowers strong enough to make you the most feared creature amongst fearsome creatures. spuffy is not a self-insert fanfiction about a hot man pulling himself down to your level and being worthy of a pedestal for it, they're about shadow integration!!! they're about the dynamic of the monster/slayer romance!!! they're equals in strength, hate, lust and love for one another!! that's what's hot about them TO ME

I'll add my 2 cents. I ship spuffy a lot and that's the main reason why I watched btvs. I can not stay interested in forever demon of the week or big bad villain for a long time when I know that everything is just for extra drama and eventually it will be killed because the good guys are stronger. This is not that exciting to me to watch it for 7 years. But I can connect to the couple plot and love stories and chemistry on emotional level or if I feel close to some character.

And I find Spike very attractive but I do not ship him with Dru at all, for example. And it's still Spike and JM there. So it's not that easy. And regarding spuffy I believe that the plot tried a lot to deliver the idea that this is not just romanticism and a positive love story. They did a lot of damage to it, intentionally. So the audience should see that it's not that romantic. Unlike the way bangel was shown. Despite of it being controversial they romanticized the sht out of it. That's the difference between these 2 approaches. And that is also why I do not want to support bangel because it's like the plot doesn't want to see the problem in it and push them to your face because they need to support their second show and it's main character. And in contrast to this the plot uses almost every opportunity to do the opposite with spuffy. And that's also the reason why I like their sweet moments, because they are so rare. And you value it because this chemistry deserves it and more. And because it's touching.

And of course I do not treat everything literally. It is a story about a vamp slayer and a vamp who appeared in the script to kill her. But in case with spuffy it's enough to me to see that the plot 1. Created him to be her enemy not a boyfriend. So a lot of negative things come from there, not because they think it's romantic. So I do not bother with "Oh no, it's not". 2. The plot saw problems in them being together before the soul and they exceeded the quota in showing it to the audience. So this moral aspect is presented a lot. The plot reminds it to you in every episode. Funny but they try so hard it becomes a regular story to me so I start to notice smth positive more. Because I would like them to be that, they deserve it and I welcome it.

it actually kinda blows my mind that the writers didn’t fully close the door on bangel and kept acting like they were a possibility after I Will Rememebr You. for all of btvs s3 were told over and over again that they cannot be together because of his curse. and in I Will Remember You the main take away from that episode is that angel would not become human and be with buffy if given the option because he believes buffy’s love for him will get her killed. that should be the end of it. no matter what they can’t be together. what does it matter if angel fulfills the shanshu prophecy and becomes human. he literally already decided that it still wouldn’t work. why are we still doing this dance and forcing both angel and buffy to regress by several years so they can act like love sick teenagers every time they’re in the same room. am i the crazy one.

Because they had a second show with him. And they needed to maintain the possibility, to play with it to move this side plot forward. Ats was using the main show both for ratings and regarding bangel to support angel's character in the whole plot. Because if she cuts him off his role becomes smaller.
