You know what irks me the most? Mike Wheeler never got to speak for himself. He was never made aware that he was at the center of a love triangle for multiple seasons. The narrative of s5 has a third party, Robin, just tell Will that he has no chance with Mike, and then Will just believes this woman even though she only watched him and Mike together for five damn seconds, and then Will is the one who does the friendzoning not once but twice. Mike never learns about the painting, and regardless of what the writers may say, there is absolutely nothing explicit in the text of the tower scene that 100% unambiguously confirms that Mike is aware that he is Will’s crush rather than referring to not having noticed Will’s struggles in general. And he didn’t even bring up the word “friends” first; Will did. Two other characters say “he’s your/my Tammy,” when he himself never states himself to be Tammy (he doesn’t even know who Tammy is!) So everybody says who Mike is in this scenario that apparently is identically repeating Robin’s history, except Mike himself. Mike was denied any agency in his own love triangle whatsoever.
