Guess who made the cover of @nexus-nox's biodome monthly???? Mr. Grace thought so highly of Cheetos paper he got it published!!!! Excerpt below the cut:

"Crystal carapace is the most widespread eridian chronic disease on the planet. Approxamettly one in 5 eridians have the CC gene, and of those eridians, half will trigger the disease throughout their lifetime. So what makes it so prominent?

Eridians survival is mainly reliant on their hard outer shell or carapace. When this carapace is damaged, fast and effective healing is extremely important. The Mercury in the blood crystalizes and forms a scab, and the minerals in the soft tissue harden to heal the wound.

But in times of stress, the carapace may crack. These cracks are common and mostly harmless. Unless you have the CC gene. The CC gene causes a certain mineral, usually a quartz, to thrive in the soft tissue. When the carapace cracks, the mineral healing process goes into overdrive, causing deposits of crystal to form over the carapace.

While relatively harmless, crystal carapace can cause minor to major inconvenience. It can clog vents, get stuck in joints, and cover sensors. If the crystals cover most or all of an eridians breathing vents, it can be faital. However, this is extremely rare, and can be avoided with the proper upkeep.

Because of these inconveniences, eridians with CC must prune it regularly. Pruning tools come in many shapes, but most often resemble human pliers with a spring mechanism. Pruning is painless if the deposit has been there for a few days, and eridians with CC often prune eachother as a sign of affection.

While a frustrating and complicated condition, most eridians with CC can live full and happy lives with little quality of life issues. The culture around CC permeates wider eridian culture to this day!"

Crystal carapace often runs in families. Because of this, eridians with the condition have formed a culture around it. Making pruned crystals into jewelry is popular, and are worn by non-CC having eridians to show support. Having polished prunings made into mate marks is another cultural practice. Crystal carapace eridians where acctually some of the first to develop the practice of mate marks! The rest of the population followed.

The crystal carapace rates skyrocketed during the astrophage crisis. Many scientists with the condition lost their lives to the stress. Rates have been stabilizing since the return of the blip-A.
