@scarecrow88
It was like a damn sauna in the locker room, and the rink was boiling
Been lifting a lot and i feel like I'm starting to make progress both in strength and aesthetically. Still have work to go but I'm feeling good.
My goalie stick is finally dead, took a hard slap shot and a decent chunk was taken out. The laminate is coming off, not sure what I'm gonna do, looking at True sticks since i like the regular ones quite a bit.
Forgot my leg pads the other day so had to borrow someone else's, which ended up being short. Got bit by a puck between the leg pads and shorts and the bruise is really coming out.
Three penalties... as a goalie
Figured i should try restarting this so i can keep a better log of what's going, rate my equipment, try and keep up with exercise, that sort of thing. Anyway i played with our division 8 team in net yesterday, ended up with three penalties. The first i pushed a player out of my crease, which i got hit with am interference penalty which was a strange call since it's a routine play. Second one was i was standing on an opposing players stick (possibly on purpose) which upset him and he pushed me, so i pushed back and was ready to go with him. Third was when my teammate got checked in the neck so i got in his face locking up with him. We ended up losing for a lot of reasons, i even scored on myself, so not the best game. Going to the gym tonight to get stronger and faster.
Played twice over the weekend, won one and lost one. Saturday played on the rink house team and we won 5-4, there was a slight breakdown in defense at the end mostly because a lot of the players were exhausted from a previous game. Last night i played on an established team that i may be getting a permanent assignment with. Interesting game in that we lost 4-3 but all four points were scored by the same person, a player clearly playing way below his skill level. My defense couldn't deal with him and i was real close to drawing penalties by hitting him. In other hockey things I'm working out more consistently to lose weight and get pressure off my knees, and make myself a little faster.
My new gear. I've been playing A LOT since my last post, specifically an iron man all night three on three tournament. I feel like I'm slowly getting better and better but there are still cracks in my defense.
Zero defense and the new year
Played in net for the higher level squad of my team last night, and we got annihilated 8-2. Didn't help that we had four on the bench and half our players had come from playing earlier. The other team had great passes pulling me far out of position and none of my tram was stopping them from doing it. I made a few mistakes but overall it was a mess. I've also decided to lose weight, i think it might go a long way and help me stay in net for awhile since I'll be taking pressure off my knees. Today is the first day and I'm not excited for it but the hard part only takes two weeks. Here's to a faster, healthier, stronger new year.
Was invited to play with the level 6 team i play for to sub for their goalie. This was great since my sons are in town so i brought my older one to watch. We unfortunately finished in a 4-4 tie but he is now interested in hockey! Anyways happy holidays!
Shoot out
Played on Sunday night and had a relatively good game, which we should have won except i got two blasted by me within a min of each other. Game ended in a tie which led to a shoot out, something that is really stressful for me since I'm still having a tough time reading shooters. The only other shoot out I've been in ended with me missing four out of five shots (which sticks in your mind). As it turned out the experience I've gained since September helped a lot, i was calm and had many more tools to hinder and stop shots. I stopped 4/5 which would have been great except the other goalie was just slightly better. Unfortunately i was told after the game that the team may dissolve leaving me to start over on a new team, just have to hope for the best.
The pain of your first season in net
Played last night and the night before, both in the women's league and had a total of 14 goals scored over both nights. Wednesday wasn't so bad since 90% off the game was in our end and the matchup was uneven in terms of talent. Last night though, holy fuck, i may as well have not showed up since everything was getting past me. I feel like I'm getting better but it's still a struggle out there trying to read the puck and keep everything covered. Wednesday night was especially hard, possibly the toughest game I've played in. Either way life goes on and I'm playing Saturday and Sunday in net and then skating out on Tuesday.
My gear is on its last legs, especially my right leg pad. Looking forward to new ones coming in next week hopefully!
Monday night
Played twice on Monday, both games back to back. First game as a goalie, lost 3-2 but all the points were legitimately solid shots from the opposing team, especially the first which was a redirect in mid air (you just can't be mad at how cool those look). Made some solid saves overall with a team I'd never played with before. Only scary moment came when i stopped the puck with my glove on the ice and my glove hand thumb was stepped on and then the guy followed up with a knee to my temple. Played with my normal team afterwards as a forward, unfortunately only seven others showed up so lines sucked. I did however abhor my first goal and we won 7-1. Playing tonight with the women's league at the abandoned mall, should be interesting since it's a high level team.
One of my first games this season
Played twice tonight, one game in the women's league and one on my assigned team (most of which didn't show up). I let one super dumb ass goal playing with the women's league in when i decided to drink some water with only a few seconds left in the second period. Was on it in my normal league until the end of the second when three went past me within a minute. I feel like I've improved a ton but I'm not happy with the amount of shots getting through, especially between my knees. Hopefully the new gear I'm waiting on will help with this.
Playing goalie
With my move I’ve finally gotten the opportunity to play goalie, there are enough leagues and rinks around here that i can play fairly often. Before now i was only able to sub a couple of times a season but now I’m getting to play at least once a week. I have a permanent assignment to a team as a goalie but I’ve been playing with a number of different teams. Tonight i subbed into a women’s league game and it was a lot of fun, and a whole different experience since the shots were different and the play was on a different level, it was also an entirely new experience changing in a women’s locker room. We lost 4-3 but it is a new team with plenty of new players and i had no idea what to expect so all in all not bad. Got three more games in the coming three days, should be fun.
