Below it, a secondary line flickered, marked with the insignia of the ISI’s internal affairs division:
‘TARIQ, M. – ASSET DESIGNATION: OPERATIONAL LIQUIDATION. IMPACT ASSESSMENT PENDING.’
Iqbal’s jaw tightened. The words “operational liquidation” struck him like a cold slap, clinical, detached, a euphemism for the brutal act he had committed in the heat of paranoia and fury. The consequences unfurled before him like a map of minefields, the loss of Tariq’s logistical network meant the sudden drying up of funds for off‑the‑books operations, the exposure of several safe houses that relied on his financial cover, and the inevitable scrutiny from those who had benefited from Tariq’s largesse.
The internal security grid, usually a well‑oiled machine of silent watchers and whispered alerts, was now trembling, officers exchanging glances in secure corridors, junior analysts double‑checking encryption keys, senior commanders pausing mid‑briefing to glance at their terminals.
A soft rustle at the doorway announced Mallika’s arrival. She stood barefoot on the cool marble, her hair falling in loose waves over her shoulders, a silk nightgown the color of deep emerald clinging to her form. Her eyes, usually warm and inviting, were now narrowed with concern, the faint lines at the corners of her mouth betraying a sleepless night spent listening to the distant hum of the city and the occasional, inexplicable chill that seemed to seep from the walls themselves.
‘You’re up early,’ she said, her voice a low murmur that seemed to absorb the ambient heat.
Iqbal pushed himself to a sitting position, the muscles in his back protesting slightly as the night’s tension ebbed, leaving behind a dull ache. He glanced at her, noting the way her presence seemed to draw a fraction of the heat from his skin, a subtle cooling that was almost imperceptible but undeniably there.
‘Tariq is gone,’ he said, the words flat, each syllable landing like a stone on still water. ‘Executed. No trial. No paperwork. Just… a bullet and a concrete floor.’
Mallika’s gaze flickered, not with shock but with a deep, unsettling understanding. She stepped closer, her bare feet silent on the stone, and placed a cool palm against his forearm. The contact was instantaneous, a wave of chill that traveled up his arm, settling in the hollow of his chest where the fire burned brightest.
‘You did what you thought was necessary,’ she whispered, her breath warm against his ear, carrying the faint scent of jasmine and sandalwood that always clung to her.
He turned his head to meet her eyes, seeing in them a reflection of his own turmoil, tempered by her unwavering steadiness. ‘The board just got smaller,’ he murmured, the phrase forming in his mind as much as his lips. ‘Yusuf Hasan has taken the reins.’
Mallika’s eyebrows lifted ever so slightly. ‘The new COAS? He’s… ambitious. Rumor says he trusts no one, not even his own shadow.’
Iqbal nodded, the motion slow, deliberate. ‘He controls the purse strings, the deployment grid, the very breath of the army. And he looks at me… as if I’m a variable he needs to eliminate before the equation balances.’
A sudden, sharp beep from the terminal drew his attention back. The encrypted line had opened a direct channel, and a voice, low, distorted through layers of security, spoke:
‘Major Iqbal, this is General Yusuf Hasan. Confirm receipt of the summons. You are to report to the ISI command bunker at 0600 hours. Bring full operational briefings. Your assets are now under my direct command.’
The voice cut off, leaving a lingering echo that seemed to vibrate in the marrow of his bones. Iqbal felt the heat within him flare again, not with anger but with a cold, calculating fire. He glanced at the portrait that now dominated the screen, a stark, imposing image of General Yusuf Hasan in his newly minted four‑star uniform. The general’s eyes were steely, his jaw set in a line that brooked no dissent. Behind him, the faint outline of the ISI emblem was etched into the marble of the background, a silent testament to the power he now wielded.
Iqbal’s lips curled into a humorless smile. He lifted his hand, tracing a finger along the edge of the screen, feeling the cool glass beneath his fingertip. The gesture was almost reverent, a silent acknowledgment of the shift in power that had just occurred.
‘The board just got smaller,’ he repeated, his voice barely above a whisper, the words hanging in the air like a promise and a threat intertwined. He let the sentence linger, feeling the weight of each syllable settle onto his chest, onto his wrists, onto the very core of his being.
The first true rays of sun broke over the horizon, spilling across the marble floor and casting long, sharp shadows that seemed to reach out like fingers. The mansion, with its freezing chill and its hidden warmth, held its breath as Iqbal prepared to step into a day where the only certainty was that the game had changed, and the players left on the board were fewer, sharper, and infinitely more dangerous.
He rose and moved toward the door, the weight of his decisions pressing upon him like a mantle of lead. The terminal blinked once more, awaiting his confirmation. He placed his palm flat upon the screen, feeling the faint pulse of encrypted data beneath his skin, and whispered the final affirmation,
‘Received.’
The line went dead, the screen returning to its dormant black. Iqbal turned back to Mallika, his eyes meeting hers one last time before he stepped into the corridor that led toward the command bunker. The dawn outside was bright, but the shadows within the mansion stretched long and deep, promising that the day ahead would be fought not only in the glare of sunlight but also in the cold, hidden recesses of power where trust was a commodity as rare as it was deadly.
He paused at the threshold, the weight of his action settling like a stone in his gut, and then, without looking back, he stepped forward into the waiting light.
The board just got smaller.

A stray cat in my area is severely injured and is in urgent need of medical care. I have hospitalised him as soon as I could but the post surgery cost is really high for me to afford. I am unemployed, and only have 2k inr that I have already used for him. Nobody is willing to help out and everyone keeps saying to just let him succumb to the injuries. I am thinking of taking a loan from a shopkeep here...but I would need to return the money. I don't know what I'll do. I am really anxious and scared rn.
