Last non-performance job I had the first like month or two I was there everybody treated me like shit, wouldn't smile at me, ignored my greetings and goodbyes, just visibly was not happy about my presence at all. I'd never really dealt with anything like that before and it definitely affected my performance, to the point that they bitched about me behind my back to a manager who had like a sit down with me about it one morning. I told her I was sorry they felt that way but that we might work better if they'd treat me with some basic respect, and obviously she went back and bitched them out for it because legit the next day their attitude did a 180 and everything was gravy from then on. I forgave it all pretty quick but damn so much wasted fucking time. Most of them were younger than 20 and I was a couple years off 30 so maybe they'd just never met a weird faggot before. But I still think about it.

I think it's silly to say that being critical of anime is due to people being uniquely racist to Japan. I also think it's ridiculous to say it is transmisogynist to be critical of the way people engage with anime and Japanese media. there is nothing "TMA" about being a weeaboo. I think that Japan has a vested political interest in exporting cultural products to increase national soft power and many people of all walks of life have swallowed their jangling keys hook line and sinker. I think a lot of people simply don't want to interrogate the political implications of the ways they relate to media they like, and even so-called principled marxists can get caught up in the cognitive dissonance implicit to being weeaboos in a world where Japan has an outsized cultural influence in service of it's political interests and desire for capitalist economic power.

frankly I think that Japan could afford to be criticized a bit more consciously by people in the West.
