My CME Jemily thoughts no one asked for ahead of season 18 finale:
Are we being queerbaited? Yes
Have we been queerbaited before? Yes
Will Jemily ever be canon? Nah
Am I mad about it? Not really
Here’s why…
I’ve been watching CM for about 16 years now, and have always thought that JJ and Emily had queer-coded chemistry. I’ve basically shipped Jemily since I watched Emily’s weird reaction to JJ and Will (I literally could not imagine straight friends acting like that?). Honorable mention: the way JJ looks at Emily on the jet when they’re talking about kids but seems so miserable when she finds out she’s having a kid with Will??? lol girl
During CM (before evolution) Paget and AJ basically both acknowledged Jemily and have admitted to playing it up on camera/bts, despite knowing that it would never happen bc of CBS.
Now, during CME, both Paget and AJ have been a lot more vocal about Jemily. Do I think it’s because Jemily will be canon? No, I don’t think so. I think it’s because now that CME is not a CBS show anymore, the cast is allowed to be more vocal about things the show thought would be bad press before. I don’t even think Paget and AJ really care about Jemily (the romantic ship). I think they more so care about Jemily (the friendship) and getting more screen time together. Which I’m not mad about tbh. We had a run there where Jemily barely had interactions and it was weird. Like, they’re besties, they literally hallucinate each other and take trips to Paris together…
Do I think they k*lled Will so that JJ could be with Emily (or even Reid—bleh)? No. I think they did it because Josh didn’t really want to play Will anymore and this literally happens to like all the main characters’ love interests (no one is safe)… to be honest I kind of saw this coming since the cancer scare. Also, and most importantly, CME has been highlighting 1 or 2 characters in each season (S1 Rossi, S2 Emily, S3 JJ and kind of Tara), so I figured JJ’s season would have some sort of trauma.
So, am I surprised they k*lled Will? No. Does it bother me… eh not really? I liked Will bc I thought he was a good dad and stuff, and I obv don’t like seeing JJ hurting.. but it’s a drama. A crime procedural drama is gonna drama.
Do I think they’ve been laying breadcrumbs out for Jemily fans after Will’s d*ath? Yes. Are they the crumbs we wanted? Meh. Are they entertaining? To me, yes. I screeched a little when JJ said her and Emily “worked it out” but wouldn’t say how lol. Even Ochoa was like??? Honorable mention: when JJ snuck onto the jet even though she wasn’t supposed to be back at work and Emily caved in .0001 seconds bc it’s JJ <3
Am I mad about the M*ndoza scene? Not really. I think it wasn’t as “Jemily” as the “it gives me you” scene, which I love. I think anyone can love that scene, even if you don’t ship Jemily, bc it’s just crazy that we’ve had genuine, loving friendships between women on CM for over 20 years. But, ultimately, I don’t really get why people are mad about the M*ndoza scene because, to me, it was 1. Emily trying to make JJ laugh (which she did) and 2. Emily explaining that she’s never had the real thing, and thus she can’t relate to JJ’s grief, but she’ll try her best to be there for her no matter what. IMO, just bc I’m a Jemily shipper (don’t come for me), I think Emily has never had the real thing because she wanted JJ and couldn’t have her, so she didn’t really try. I mean she genuinely never looked happy with any man I cannot stress this enough. Comphet is a bitch, trust me, been there.
Okay, I still love Jemily, but I don’t think we’re getting it. I think they are queerbaiting us a bit, but like, this isn’t new? Why would I be mad about it now, after 20 years.. just because the CME social media can hashtag Jemily now without getting chewed out by a network? Let them have fun I guess. Is it kind of silly? Yeah, but I also get excited when they talk about it. Also we have Tara and Rebecca, and that’s really exciting too. I hope we get a queer wedding on CME
I’m still having fun watching, bc this show has been a comfort to me for 16 years. And honestly, more interactions between my best girls, yes pls, I’ll take it.
(Okay but can Paramount actually make Emily queer tho bc we know she was supposed to be but CBS were cowards, thx)
